An an Isuzu owner, id say the 1.9L is for people who are not going to use the car for towing and the 3.0L is for people who will use the car for towing. The 3.0L 4JJ3 motor is bread for hauling and if you were going to be towing a caravan around the 3.0L would be the engine choice. If you are going to use the car for school, shop runs and highway driving without a caravan the 1.9L is perfect as the 3.0L is overkill for that purpose. Isuzu's are excellent vehicles. Happy hunting!
Just a personal observation on ride comfort. I guess it’s all relative to other ladder frame competitors. I had a base model MU-X as a rental in Adelaide, with its pretty awful urban roads. I found it to be so unsettled and uncomfortable, I returned it and picked up a sportage instead. 100 times more comfortable. This illustrates the sacrifice people seem to be prepared to make to have a proper 4WD. Putting up with Sub standard ride comfort most of the time in the suburbs for the rare times you need the towing capacity.
Back in 2021, I picked up the Isuzu MU-X 1.9l from the dealer. Driving back home was awful, had to check the tire pressure. It was at a whopping 52 psi at all fours. I put it down to 32 psi, never complained since.
I live in one of those 3 tonne caravans. They tow quite well and I'm using a twin turbo ute with 500n/m torque. My decision based on not alot of long distance towing, but economical day to day use of the Ute.
I'd guess the Ranger? My brother in VIC is considering the Everest 4x2 with the 2.0 twin-turbo diesel engine. 500Nm is excellent. How has your Ranger been in terms of reliability - any issues? What about the gearbox, any problems?
The 4JJ3 Isuzu motor peak torque is 508Nm with rock solid reliability. This motor originates from their 8-11ton truck series, is used in excavators and 100kva generators. The4JJ motor is make to haul.
I brought the mazda bt50 single cab for work. Its great with the 3.0 engine.I normally have 700kgs plus in the back and i tried the 1.9 and it felt underpowered when empty.
May as well have the 4 x 2 because unlike some specs of Everest and Pajero Sport you cannot use the 4x4 on all surfaces. We towed tens of thousands of kilometres in our Pajero Sport. Set in 4H the all wheel grip when accelerating or cornering with throttle is just a class above this old technology MUX. Yes buy the 1.9l 4 x 2 but watch the used value drop faster than the 3.0l. Regrettably even the 3.0l is still stuck with the primitive part-time 4x4 if you buy that.
Pajero Sport's selectable 2wd and 4wd system is simply the gold standard for transfer case flexibility. Unfortunately many customers will not know how to use it properly.
I’ve just spent the last 4 months test driving and comparing all the 4x4 suvs I could I must of test drove the Mux, Fortuner Everest and Pajero Port attest 3 times each with some of them more We wanted an SUV that could tow a decent size camper trailer, was 4x4 to let us explore , reliable, and enough room for the kids After everything was compared the Fortuner came out way on top for us You might not get a lot of fancy stuff inside but that’s sort of the thing I like about Toyota, no nonsense The Mux sounded like a truck and was slow I could only imagine how this 1.9 would be The Everest would be grate but way to much problems for us Pajero Sport would probably be next best just can’t get past the look of the back, also a little underpowered.
You don't see the back end from the driver's seat. The Super Select II 4x4 system is twenty years ahead of the MUX's primitive part-time system. I don't tow a van anymore due to health but if I did I wouldn't do it with a 4 x 2 which is all the MUX is on bitumen no matter what price you pay.
Realistically, no one is going to buy the 1.9 and expect it to perform well for a around-the-continent trip. The 3.0 TD motor is the no-brainer choice for better performance and quite possibly better fuel economy. The 1.9 will be good for short trips, and popular in asian markets where engine capacity determine the amount of annual road taxes to be paid. Hence why the Ford bi-turbo 2.0 was a run away success compared to the older 3.2 5 cylinder diesel.
What was isuzu thinking, you need more power not less, 110kw is just a joke, the 3 litre is also a boat anchor, the mu-x need a modern small capacity high output engine of 150kw plus
People need to stop kidding themselves that modern cars/utes can actually tow the quoted towing figures safely. Won’t be long before the government steps in and puts a stop to the lunacy.
I'm no expert.....but but it seems logical to go the 3.0 liter Mux if you're towing....the smaller motor would have to be working harder to deliver the same output to tow
I agree. Towing 2.5T, I prefer my 2019 Troopcarrier manual to my previous 2012 200series automatic - the automatic was simply rubbish - high revs, high temps, no torque converter lockup. Don't have to worry about all that with a manual - always in the gear you want or anticipate you'll need.
That's more power than a 1HZ powered 70, 80 or 105 series Landcruiser which have been reliably towing large caravans around the country for decades. There may be better options but 110kw and 360nm will do the job just fine.
@@ScottSouthy with 1Hz powered LC's were ok, but didn't really have much choice, but now do have far better tow vehicles out there. OK, the 1.9L MUX would ok for say a camper trailer, but a 3T van, hills and head winds would be a nightmare. Would rather go for a good quality secondhand vehicle this.
@Renegade040 why would you consider the 1.9 if your plan is long term towing buy the 3ltr. If it's your run around ute that you launch your 3t boat with on occasions than the 1.9 makes sense.
Perhaps you might consider NOT reviewing cars that have less than a five star ANCAP safety rating? That is such an important parameter these days and might encourage companies to cooperate.
Also a yes or no issue. What's preferable? All companies involved or a few standouts? Already Honda Australia has balked at ANCAP and only the HRV has been assessed (4 stars). It would be great if all models were assessed in my opinion and if reviewers made an ANCAP rating a prerequisite then maybe (?) the companies would think twice.

These things need weight in them to be comfortable ie passengers
Sometimes they run the tire pressures at 42 psi, more comfortable at 35 psi, and manufacturers placard recommends 29 psi.
The thing is if you need the towing capacity you need the towing capacity rare or not.

Not being a caravaner or bush basher. I would pick the LSU 3.0 4X2 as a touring vehicle. But I would wait for the next update.😊
Me too - the updated media screen will be worth the wait.
Still very capable . The extra grunt from the bigger engine is a bonus, but this one will likely serve a good majority of buyers really well
I think so, too.
Only if they have no idea about 4wds

On the sealed road, it is 2WD only. The 4WD is part time, so you can't drive on sealed roads with 4WD engaged in the Isuzu.
