本曲最初由皮特.西格於 1955 年創作，其歌詞靈感來自俄羅斯著名小說《靜靜的頓河》中所出現的哥薩克傳統民謠，旋律則參考傳統愛爾蘭民謠作成。原曲收尾於兒郎上戰場，希格森深受啟發，遂主動與西格聯絡，兩人於 1960 年加入新歌詞，形成反覆循環的結構。歌詞從「花朵」到「戰士」再到「墓園」，以平易近人的提問控訴著戰爭的殘酷與無奈，並不斷地唱道:「他們何時才能明白?」訴說著長久歷史以來，人們不斷重複戰爭的荒謬。
