  • In partnership with Intrepid Museum in NYC. Developing a deep-space habitat will allow a crew to live and work safely in space for long durations on missions to explore the Moon and Mars. The Habitation Systems Development office is a multi-center NASA team working together to develop sustainable living quarters, workspaces, and laboratories for astronauts on next-generation space missions. Hear from these experts as they give viewers an inside look into the project.
NSFLive is NASASpaceflight.com's weekly show covering the latest in spaceflight. It is broadcast live on Sundays at 3 pm Eastern. On each show, we rotate through various hosts and special guests.
Today's episode is hosted by John "Das" Galloway (Host & Producer for NASASpaceflight.com) and moderated by Summer Ash.

    re: forgetting launches have sound
thats why I love the nasaspaceflight streams, if you can play them on a surround sound setup with the sub turned all the way up its pretty much the best experience short of being in person of course

My whole life (69 years) all these cool things always 'will happen in 10 years'! Moon habitats? 'Oh, it is going to happen in 2035 or so!' In 1969 we were all sure this would happen before 1979!

You got my idea send to you... I gave that idea in a chat for several months (year) ago... about the planet/planet moon that has always the same side towards the sun... It's impossible to live in the hot part, but I gave that idea of living or getting energy to the cold part from near the hot part...

Hey, I dream of Jeannie as a "Nick at Night" show, lol, I remember when it was still running on reruns of broadcast TV... Anyway don't feel too bad about the Office building thing, I thought the Empire State Building was in Chicago up until about 3 minutes ago...

The whole Lunar gateway makes no sense (why go to a mini-space-station near the moon if you're headed for Mars on a much larger ship?) and will turn out to be either a huge drag should its use be mandated or a developmental cul-de-sac quickly forgotten.
I'm confident that the engineers involved in designing this architecture are fully aware of that and hopefully their technology is adaptable to a more serious design.

What we call "civilization" is dependent on excess capacity. This extends to space, even more so.

OK, I am 46 minutes into the Video and already feel Compelled to make another Comment, considering NASA already deligated SLS as an proven Human to Orbit proven vehicle and has handed the Lunar Lander Contract to SpaceX... a Lunar version Starship touching down is already over ten times the Module being presented here in these antiquated graphics and has already won the contract... ?

I believe the boring company is a prototype to get things ready for boring underground tunnels and civilizations for Mars... Within a week of Elon announcing the boring company I knew at that time he was developing another company to dominate Mars once he breaks the barrier of getting there

How are other national space agencies helping in this effort?

Canada (Canadian Space Agency, CSA), Europe (European Space Agency, ESA), and Japan (JAXA) are all helping with the contruction of the Lunar Gatway along with NASA. The ESA is building the European Service Module (ESM) for Orion. The Artemis Accords codify science sharing among the member countries as well as other aspects of space operations.

The sooner work starts on the Moon base the better,, they have spent $millions thinking about it and have landed humans on the moon yet still no moon base,, if the FAA didn't dither so much with their environmental issues Elon Musk would have a base station almost finished by now.

FAA vs SpaceX is not really a thing, except for clicks. After all, the FAA defended SpaceX in front of Congress in Jun 2021 over the unauthorized SN8 flight.
SpaceX has approval for orbital launches of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy from Boca Chica. They can also fly sub-orbital tests of reusable spacecraft. SpaceX went through an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to get that approval in 2014. Now, SpaceX wants to fly orbital flights with Starship, that has roughly 3 times the propellant as the Falcon Heavy. So the FAA review is to see about adding Starship to that existing approval, without having to go through another EIS.
The FAA is the lead agency with NASA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the US Coast Guard, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service all involved from the beginning. With 6 different goverment agencies involved, it is not surprising that the review takes time. Musk asking everyone to comment, over 18,000 comments were received, didn't help. Consultations were mentioned for a third time on Apr 29th and mitigations for the first time, so some issues did come up and SpaceX has been working out a solution with whichever agency or agencies cover the issue. The Permitting Dashboard: Federal Infrastructue Projects has 5 sections to the FAA review. The first was completed in Oct 2021, second in Jan 2022, third in Apr 2022, and fourth in May 2022. So there has been continual progress and there is 1 section to go.
