I've had the same issues. What helped me was #1. Eating a diet to maintain my glucose levels throughout the night. Waking up at 3am and being wide awake is an adrenaline surge and caused by a drop in your blood sugar level. If you happen to wake up at 3 am and you’re wide awake, eat a small snack that includes a carb, fat and protein. #2. Taking melatonin, CBD, magnesium glycinate and L-Theanine 30 minutes before bedtime. #3. Stop saying or telling yourself that you wake up at 3 to 5 am every day. When you say that, even mentally, guess what? You will always wake up at that time. #4 Get fresh air, sunshine and exercise daily as well. #5. Vagus nerve stimulation. That controls the whole enchilada. It regulates your Parasympathetic Nervous Systems and affects sleep and wakefulness. #6. Address stress factors in your life. Relationships, financial obligations, emotional issues, work/travel, etc. Note: to negate the effects of the caffeine from your morning coffee, take an L-Theanine capsule with your coffee. Good luck with your zzz's.

Thanks so much for all the tips, many of them I have definitely tried like maintaining my glucose levels and having a snack before bed but no luck. I started a new magnesium drink that contains LTheanine and have noticed I get a really deep sleep with it. I will have to look up the Vagus nerve thing, never heard of it but makes sense. I am a very sensitive person and get stressed/anxious easily so I think that will always be an issue. Thank you again for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it!

@@justinelouise5534 Also if you have a Leaky Gut, that would affect your sleep. Going a a diet to repair a leaky gut would also help. Having a compromised gut will affect the production of neurotransmitters, some of which are melatonin, serotonin and GABA. All of which affect sleep. What has helped my gut is avoiding gluten, supplementing with L-Glutamine and the most important supplement is taking Colostrum. I take Sovereign Laboratories brand. I noticed a change in mood and sleep within a few weeks. Good luck to you.

Don’t ever apologize for taking any sort of sleep aid. Like you I have suffered for years from insomnia where I wake up at 2 or 3 and can’t go back to sleep. My doctor gave me Ambien and I take it with no shame. It works. I don’t have the crazy side effects, and I take it no more than once a week and have no addiction issues. It gives me a nice, deep, dreamy sleep. You do what works for you. People who have never had chronic insomnia are in no position to judge.

What I mainly liked about this video is how the author appreciates how big a struggle insomnia can be. I know how miserable it is to be awake in the night feeling that there's nowhere to go and nothing to do that helps. I may try Benadryl, but it's not recommended to take for more than two weeks. I believe the main thing is to identify the lifestyle issues that cause or worsen insomnia and try to correct them.

You saved me on the costco sleep aid. I had been sleeping poorly for over a month from a painful breakup. Had tried marijuana gummies, Mg, melatonin and zzzquil with moderate results but none would work on the second night. Last night i took 25mg Doxylamine succinate, the walgreens knock off version, 30 minutes befroe bed and another 25 before going to sleep. I did wake up at the 4 hour mark to pee but was able to fall back asleep. My tracker gave me a score of 80 including over an hour of deep sleep. I was extremely sleep deprived after weeks of nights where my app wouldn't give me a score because it never detected any sleep. 1 to 3 hours had been the norm. Thanks for the tip

Hi, thanks for your caring helpful video. That little blue pill is the same thing as unisom which you can buy at Walmart, for $4 which is the opposite of Benadryl (which Benadryl doesn't work for me) after much research, I believe the whole waking from 1to3 is due to an over toxic liver. Our liver is not able to detox. We can try to do liver detox things to help clear this naturally.(lots of videos on this on RUclips) I have tried taking 1/2 of a unisom on occasion, and I actually used to take it 7 years ago when this insomnia of mine started. I took it for a couple years til it didn't work anymore. and now if I try to take it my head doesn't feel good the next day. Thank you again for sharing a temp help to help others. blessings to you!

This was the last In a line if 1000 of videos .
I also tried the sleep hygiene suggested, every kind .
Benadryl melatonin valerian ( which really helps w daytime anxiety I've been taking it for yrs )
    Cant drink chamomile ,allergic
    Anyway bottomline,
    Keeping electronics out of bedroom
    Adjusting diet helped a bit
    BUT
Last week I saw this video
I was so down and exhausted
I asked my brother to go pick up
    Costco sleep kit
He was unsuccessful in procuring it .

Had him go get unisom ( same antihistamine in Kirkland ) and the same type of magnesium in the Kirkland
( I too did the bolt upright night time thing. So agonizing!)
    I've slept 3 nights now in a row !!
    THANK YOU!! Thank you !!
Im going to get the wrist lavender thing too :) .
I dont drink caffeine , adverse effects..
I think we may have high histamine constitutions. Hence the anti-histamines working well
Sidenote : kirkland is not truly " sleeping pill" its just antihistamine w mag .

Hi Justine. Just wanted to thank you for your video. I had been suffering over a month with waking up way too early. I believe this insomnia is due to my diagnosed depression. I was getting only 4-5 hours of sleep each night and suffering for it. I was getting desperate to find help. I found doxylamine succinate 25 mg tabs at Walmart. This is the same ingredient contained in the Kirkland Sleep Aid. I took it last night with my regular night time antidepressant and I woke this morning after a solid 7 hours sleep! Thats the best I have slept in many weeks! I never got that result after taking diphenhydramine. I think I had grown tolerant to that medicine. I will take the doxylamine nightly for awhile. Then I will try to take a lower dose to see if I can wean myself off of it, as you said you are doing.

@@justinelouise5534 Hi Justine. I just wanted to give you an update on my sleeping and mental health. I no longer need to take the Sleep Aid every night. I now only take it occasionally. And usually I cut the pills in half. I am continuing to take a low-dose of melatonin along with my prescribed antidepressant. The antidepressant is mirtazapine 15 mg. I sleep approximately eight hours every night. I only occasionally awaken during the night. That is usually to go to the bathroom. But I always go back to bed and continue to sleep until the morning. I no longer have the problem of early awakening between 3 and 5 AM. I know that you can appreciate how great I feel because of this added sleep. Only someone who has suffered from insomnia, as you have, would really understand.
You may wonder what I attribute my success to. First of all, I used a sleep hygiene application on my iPad that is recommended by the Veterans Administration. This application monitored my sleep patterns using data entered by me on a daily basis. I found the application on the Apple store. It is available to anyone and gave me feedback on behavioral modification to promote good sleep habits. I no longer use this application because my sleeping has improved tremendously.
Most of all, I attribute my improved sleep to two other behavioral changes in my life. First, I have been abstinent from all alcohol in the past three months. Secondly. I have been attending Alcoholics Anonymous on a regular basis. Thirdly, I have been spending an average of 12 hours every week at a food bank helping distribute food to the hungry and poor in my area. I’m guessing that my insomnia was caused by both the alcohol abuse and a spiritual malady. I really feel that the solution to my insomnia was not pharmaceutical but spiritual.

Hi there! I am so glad you are now sleeping again! One sentence you said make me think, it was about waking up and thinking about a task to do in the morning. This could be a mind that can never rest, and with hypnosis you could regress to the cause, reframe it and enjoy sleep. Another thing that really helps to quiet a chatty mind is to listen to someone else talking. It could be a hypnotic recording set to relax, or a meditation, or the sound of the ocean. A background noise covers up internal noise and always works if I wake up and start thinking! And you are correct, all caffeine interferes with the Arcadian cycle. A doctor who has worked with insomnia for 30+ years says in this video (ruclips.net/video/nU6FXWwLS-w/видео.html) that when insomnia lasts for months on end, normal methods and routines don't work, but CBT works as well as medication (however, he specifies that when one stops medication, he is back to stage one and can't sleep, but after 6 sessions of CBT, when he stops, he still sleeps well! So I think it's worth trying that. I am a hypnotherapist and I totally believe that our busy mind holds the reason why we can't sleep well. I love the definition of insomnia the doctor gave. It's not a one off event, it must be every day for more than 3 months. And interestingly, he added that if we don't sleep much but wake up refreshed, it's not insomnia. Hi, I like strong tea, but now to make it taste stronger without so much caffeine, I add a Tetley’s decaf tea bag to one regular bag. Most decaf tea has no flavour but the Tetley’s does. I hope this does not mean it is not so decaf. Others in my family just drink the decaf Tetley’s, because as I said, it tastes pretty good. I may experiment tomorrow to see if I can do double decaf and still get a pretty reasonably strong cup of tea. I also went half decaf with coffee and worked my way down to decaf. I like Folger’s decaf and McCafe decaf.

    I struggle with insomnia.
I got an Apple Watch that monitors sleep. It showed that my sleep patterns were the opposite of what they should be. My research said that meant I was not waiting until I was actually tired to go to sleep but was following a schedule to go to sleep. That really helped. I do take sleep meds but sometimes they don’t work or I wake up. I now have a kindle show beside me. If I can’t go back to sleep I watch the show MONK. I suffer from insomnia the last 20 years. I go to sleep around midnight and I am wide awake at 3.00am. I think it is because of high cortisol levels because I have a lot of stress but the blood tests in the morning showed only a bit above the normal. my cortisol levels should be measured at night and not during the day, but the docs don't understand it. Another doctor I went to, prescribed me anti depressants but I didn't take them because I saw they had many side effects. Of course I have tried all the natural ones, melatonin, 5-htp, valerian root etc. Don't work for me. I have also tried sleeping pills, benzodiapamine. It helps me fall asleep but not stay asleep. I will try the one you said. I am in Europe but I will try to find what other supplement has this substance.

When I commented before, I was planning on trying Root of Valerian on my wrist every night. Well, I went farther than that! I bought an essential oil diffuser and I planned to use it every night. Well the first morning I had it (it was delivered about 6.30 in the morning)) I just laid down in bed because, as usual, I was exhausted because I only slept about four hours or less each night and many nights getting no sleep at all. I had put a few drops of the oil into the diffuser but I didn’t plug it in and it was just sitting on my nightstand and I went to sleep for three hours! Boy, was I a believer! The next two nights I plugged the diffuser in and looked forward to sleeping for a full night hopefully! However; even though I had taken my sleeping pill as I do every night, I did not go to sleep until four o’clock in the morning for two nights in a row. I was frantic because I do count on my sleeping pill for some sleep most nights, I was not affected by the sleeping pill for two nights and only slept about one hour those two nights. As a result of this, I gave the oil and the diffuser away the third day. After a few more nights my sleeping pill started to work last night and I slept 3 hours. I will have to deal with nights with little or no sleep, but I can’t deal with the diffuser making my sleep patterns worse. I’m so very happy that the oil and the sleep aid works for you!

I watched and responded to this video about a year ago but I kept it in the back of my mind. I'll tell you more about that later.
In your video you focus on the physical causes of waking but not the psychological causes.
In my own experience waking, like you describe it, is a small panic attack caused by a memory. The problem is, we often forget what the memory was once we wake so its hard to associate them afterwards. To do so, you really have to focus on your first thought the moment you wake.
I actually did a video on this but didn't like how it turned out so I didn't upload it. I documented how I realized the connection between waking and the death of our baby goat. I never got to deal with the emotions when it happened so my mind would try and deal with it at 3am.
Waking up in the middle of the night like this can be the result of a childhood trauma called, "
Emotional Delay." This happens when we learn to put our emotions, from a specific event, on the back burner and don't deal with them when they happen. Have you ever felt sad, angry or just off for no reason? That is another sign of Emotional Delay. These emotions linger when we don't deal with them in the moment. We sometimes forget about the event and are only left with the emotion or feeling.
So how do we deal with this to improve sleep? First we need to learn to acknowledge our feelings when they arise. Another, thing we can do is write all our thoughts down before going to bed. If it doesn't work, focus on the first thought that wakes you and write about it the next day.
When I realized our goat's death was what was waking me, I confronted my feelings by putting his picture by my bed and talking about the circumstances of his death with my wife. Sharing your feelings with a person you trust really helps.
So, why did I keep your video in the back of my mind? Deep inside I felt you left the psychological causes of waking at night out. The problem is I suffer from Emotional Delay and didn't deal with it till now. 😂
All the best an sweet dreams. 🤗

I've been dealing with the exact same type of insomnia for the past couple of years. I think it's peri menopause related. Not sure though. Like you I tried every single thing that's ever been recommended, I've watched hundreds of sleep advice videos. My doctor even recommended a book that didn't work. All my doctors sleep prescriptions don't work, but if they do they give a hangover effect.
The only thing that I have ever found that helps me sleep in the night and stay asleep is Benadryl. But then you said that the pill you found has the same ingredient as Benadryl, so I was a little disappointed that your find was pill related and what I already take. I find the benadryl gives me constipation. Wish I could get to the root cause of this.
and yes, one of the most frustrating things is people who do not have this type of insomnia and start throwing advice at you thinking they could figure it out in five seconds and have all the answers. I just want to smack them!

Back in 2009 while dealing with a thyroid issue, I started having panic attacks - the first one started around not being able to stay asleep. Doctors put me on Ambien which kept me asleep but I didn't wake up refreshed and I knew the potential for addiction with this medication. After my thyroid issue was resolved, we tackled getting off the Ambien. That was where I first learned about 5-HTP which is a chemical made in the body from tryptophan. I started taking 400 milligrams a night and that was the ticket to my confidence and getting off Ambien. They said to give it 6 to 12 weeks to be fully effective, but I noticed the effects within a few days. I know you are using an antihistamine and it really works well for you. I'm glad you found something because sleep is fundamental to so many systems in our body. But over the long haul, research is concerned about how it's affecting our brains. So maybe you can give 5-HTP a shot to see if you get the results you are looking for. Just remember that worrying about sleep will interrupt sleep. But you don't have to worry now that you have a backup with the benadryl. Best wishes!

I noticed the insomnia started when all of my perimenopause symptoms started. I am 53 and have not yet gone through menopause. I seem to be having a tough time trying to get through it. my mother had zero symptoms going through menopause so she has zero advice. She also falls asleep at the drop of a needle and can sleep long hours through the night so once again, zero advice from her. So I keep searching for help with this.
