- Today’s fun Friday topic is about taking time off from playing the trumpet. Every person needs to find balance with the trumpet, and in my experience, it differs from person to person. I have explored going years without taking a day off from the trumpet and having one light day per week to offer reprieve to my chops, and I also have gone years taking one day off a week, and I also have gone years taking a day off only when I need it. Explore all three approaches to time off on our instrument in 21-day chunks. It takes 21 days to make a habit for most, and you will be able to discover what works best for you if you don’t already know this. I think there are benefits and downsides to all three methodologies of taking time off, and in my experience, the third option of taking time off when it is needed most fits most people. For me, the third option works best because I can’t afford to take a day off every week with my performance schedule, and I also benefit greatly from having a day off from the instrument every few weeks for mental health reasons. I also discovered that it is necessary to take time off from the instrument each year to heal and recuperate. I usually take off one week each year and understand the ramifications of this time off. These techniques will aid in chop longevity and our ability to avoid burnout.
