Thank you so very much. My first car was a 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 and it was a stick! I loved it! I bought a 2016 Toyota Camry SE. I was leary of using the paddle shifters but you made it so clear! Again thank you!!
People, you dont have to remove your foot from the gas while upshifting or downshifting
well thats good because I never did before haha
I came here for this lmao thanks
Noted
Lets gooo
I just got rear ended by a Camry 🤬
Thx for you’re sound advice!
It’s actually a pretty cool feature. You can’t really mess it up either.. it’s preprogrammed to shift up when or if you over rev to the point of potential damage. A real safe way to get a “feel” for a 5 speed without having to worry about burning your clutch out.
when are you supposed to down shift
@@_BLUU_ If you are coming to a stop you don't have to downshift because the car will shift it down into 1st when you come to a stop(I do it anyways to get a little engine braking) but if you slow down you want to downshift at around 1100 - 1500 rpms depending on the car
@@Littlemineslaps thanks
@@Littlemineslaps im totally new to this mode the other day i was going down a hill and i down shifted and it felt like the car slowed down suddenly transmission had brakes(i didnt press the brake pedal)... is that normal or will it damage the transmission or engine?
@@j1mster3 From my understanding thts because the speed u were at was too high for gear u shifted to, so the car loses speed. I'm relatively new as well so I'm not sure if the brakes activate to prevent damage or if it's j wearing away.
Your right Jeff, had my ‘18 SE for almost three years and never used the PS until three days ago. IM IN LOVE, feels like a brand new car
This is the only video that has actually helped me understand how PS work. Thank you Jeff!!
Its funny that so many people overlook this wonderful feature in the Camry SE and other models, you can drive it like a manual, i do it every day, theres no hesitation when you are waiting for 3k to shift to 2nd, etc, if you leave it in ECO mode in Drive then you have that hesitation that causes a sensation (LOL)
I find that using the Sequential shift cuts out a lot of the throttle lag that people complain about
Your demo really helped ! I used to drive a manual and just bought a awd cvt crossover. I can't wait to try this!
Ali D a cvt with paddle shifters doesn’t do anything. The shifts are simulated, not real.
i own a civic hatchback sport 2017, and it has paddle shifters. never used it, gonna try it now. thanks for the video
The sound effects you used to narrarate the salty comments were 🔥.
What sound effects?
I am old school now saw the buttons on my new 2020 se. I will now try it. Used to love Mazda rx7 manual back in the days. Now Toyota has come a long way. Thanks for the info helped a lot
I think it's great that someone helped this special little guy make a video.
Noooooo you did not 🤣🤣 I cackled just now oh lord
i wonder if the 2019 model has seat height adjustment or do he bring along his booster seat
Sport mode is fun too. Luv it 👍
4:28 😅😅😂
Have a sport button on my 2021 corolla but how do i use it??
Thanks for another nice video, Jeff! I really haven't played much with the paddle shifters in my Camry SE but need to do that. I just leave it in Normal Mode automatic which gets you to the highest gear it can for better fuel economy. Still sometimes a guy just wants to have fun, even without a clutch pedal! I like how Sports Mode shows you which gear you're in and you can watch the tachometer change when you choose another gear. Yesterday I was ambling along on a back road in Normal Mode at 45 mph and the tach was just 1200 rpm. That's an idle speed (choke)! No wonder the Camry gets such good fuel economy. I don't know what gear I was in but probably 6th. I need to go back and try that again in Sports Mode and see for sure which gear does that.
great demo toyota jeff; just got the 2021 corolla and can't wait to use the paddle shifters in them. will be a new and hopefully great driving experience.
BIG thumbs UP for mentioning the GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME......LOST! Much Love to You my Friend!
Thanks so much. Now I will use my paddle shifters. :)
I always wanted to know how they work on My Camry. Thanks.
Now that I have me 2018 SE dualed out with Magnaflow mufflers, I bet I could really enjoy paddle-shifting. I gotta try it.
I just accidentally discovered the steering assist on this Camry. Had me spooked for a minute.
It startled me too! Lol
Lmao yeah me three . I was like wtf is going on here then I was like that’s freaking awsome and a very good feature for people who can’t drive which is a lot of people
@@texasmike9152 LMFAO!
That happened to me😂
BEEP BEEP BEEP 😂😂😂
Thank you for these lessons.. they are so impactful.
But u knw wat, I love your Toyota Camry.. so much so that I wish I can have it.
Thank you so much.
😂😂😂😂you shifted just right Jeff!
Great video!! Actually, EXPLAINING what you're doing, allowing us to hear the vehicle, and calling out the gear numbers.
All the other kids video talk like their audience knows wtf they're doing.
Great Video, especially when you made light of the comments Funny
I really appreciate you doing this video about the paddle shifters on the Camry because I rented one and have never used paddle shifters.
Thanks for this! Subscribed and now a new follower! This helped with my 2021 Corolla Hatchback Special Edition!
That was exactly what I was looking for. Very informal
Just got my 2019 Camry se a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it.. however coming from a 1999 Camry that I’ve been driving for years this one feels like a spaceship inside and it’s taken me a while to figure out all these buttons and what they do, I’m curious how to get the digital speedometer to come up in the center of the dash like yours I haven’t been able to figure that one out yet.
Use the arrows on the steering wheel to scroll through the info pages on the gauge screen. There should be pages for your tire pressures, time engine running, gas mileage/usage. It should be in the set pages all the way to the left.
You press up and down on the pad on the steering wheel where you can see ECO fuel, fuel capacity, engine stats, and your speed
you shifted too soon!
😄😄😄 You shifted to soon, you shifted to late, great video 👌
2 questions: What if you have to make an emergency brake while in the highest gear? (There's no time to downshift) so how much would that hurt the car compared to if it were in auto.
Next: to go back to auto (S to D), does the car need to be in neutral/park or can I just switch between the 2 modes while in Highway?
Yo same name??
And yes u can switch on highways
My question too
It will actually automatically shift down when you braking (and you forget to downshift) and also shifts upwards itself when you reving too high. More like a transmission protection mechanism in all the cars with PS.
You can switch from D to S and S to D at any time you are driving, just make sure you don't accidentally shift into neutral or reverse while shifting it out
If I'm driving in S mode and I decide to change to automatic mode, can I just go ahead and move into it without stopping, or would that do damage?
This is a very good and informative video! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great video Jeff! Thanks gonna try mine!
Is it safe to leave it on D but use the pedal shifter just to help slow down on hills?
04:27-04:38 is EXACTLY how it sounds in my head when I read faux experts opinons.
You did a downshift on paddle while braking and bringing car to a stop. But for what i know, downshift is automatic when braking is needed but you chose to do it manually which obviously was unneeded, but to conclude the up-shift(+) is always manual and downshift(-) can be automatic too.. Is that right sir?
So basically upshift when increasing your speed and downshift when decreasing your speed / coming to a stop..?
I don’t know why I’ve had people tell me to downshift when I’m accelerating, what’s wrong & what’s right? 😭
The fact that a video like this has to be made questions todays society.
When using paddle shifters do you take your foot off the accelerator as you shift up or down as you would when driving a normal manual when you depress the clutch? Or just change away while still having the accelerator on?
no you dont take your foot of the accelerator although you can hear that he dosent take his foot off the accelerator
Jeff, We're still waiting for overdue return of the M-A-N-U-A-L Camry. If Accord can offer it then Camry can too.
only question i have is do u release the gas pedal when shifting as one would do in a manual transmission?
No
Can you shift the lever to s mode when driving or does it need to be stopped to change from drive mode to s mode and vice versa
Any new colors for 2020 camry? Maybe blue print blue??
I drive a 2019 Toyota Camry LE. The LE doesn't have paddle shifters, but i Love driving on S mode.
I have a 2019 SE. I just really started using the “S” mode in the regular. It gives the car a better take off in my opinion
Hahaha I love this guy 🤣
Would using the S drive without using the paddle shifters damage the transmission in any way?
It wont autoshift ( some do as a safety feature ) and will stay at high rpm but each gear does have a max speed and staying at redline without shifting for a long period of time can cause damage to your engine and transmission
When I use my paddle shifter and come to a light in 4 th gear and don’t down shift
My car would shift it’s self back to 4th and I’ll have to shift it to 5th and 6th
Should I down shift and not do this or don’t matter since it’s not a real manual engine
Is there negatives to paddle shifter in the long run?
Hi Jeff, Why doesn't the car automatically downshift when you slow down or come to a full stop? I see that some cars do this... But my Camry doesn't... 2019 Camry SE.
Okay if ur in 5 gear and need to stop can you stop without hurting the transmission or do I need to down shift at a proper level to not hurt the transmission
Should I leave the car in D4?
it safe to go down to 1st gear when coming to a stop? I was taught to be in second when coming to a stop, then go to 1st to start going up the gears again after being at a complete stop
What would happen if you slow down without downshifting
That’s what I want to know
@@antoniomattis9261 same
What happen if Im using shift 4 and i have to stop suddenly?
I really enjoy more an automatic transmission, so my question is, this option it’s only for those who wants to drive like stick shift? I never use this option in my car.
No. Sport mode is automatic. You can drive in sport without using the paddle shifters. It only “turns on” when you press the paddle shifter. Automatic sport just increased the rpm and gives the car a more racing and fun feel.
I just bought a 2015 Aurion Sportivo in Australia and when in S mode it of course automatically changes gear but at higher revs ie in Sports mode.
So if you want to use the paddle shifters will you be overriding the S mode which automatically changes gear?
There seems to me to be a conflict between the car choosing when to change gear and the driver choosing when to change gear by using the paddle shifters.
can i use the paddles while it’s on drive ?
Do you have to be stopped to change from D to S and vice versa?
Juan Carlos Rincon Parada no
I got a 2019 SE for a rental and I've tried sport mode a few times. I think I understand the upshifting at higher speeds, but the downshifting into lower speeds is what gets me. Lol. Do you downshift to reach lower speeds or do you slow down, THEN DOWNSHIFT??? Help me out
Apparently if you want to pop it into s mode you just Pan the camera to the right and look down and that's all you need. Voila
All the videos demonstrate how to use the Paddle Shifters! Is there a video on how to ignore/not use it?
put it in d for duh
what speed to use for what sequential shift number?
Hey Jeff I have a 2017 rav4. This video is really useful but I have a question for you. I know from my car that from Driving mode it starts at S4. Say I bring it down to S1 cause I’m in my neighborhood. If I were to bring it back to my automatic driving mode can I just move the stick to the right from s1 to Drive or I have to bring my s1 all the way back to s4 to Drive? Thanks.
What happens if you don't downshift???
Hi,Nice video,But can you please tell me while driving on automatic gear position, when we use the paddle shifters, how can we again disable the paddle shift function
Depends on the car probably, but in my car all I have to do is shift out of sport mode back into drive.
When you accelerating can you up shift without letting go the gas pedal
And when you decelerating what rpm should you downshift and should you apply brake or let the engine do its work??
1. Yes when your accelerating upshift with your foot still on the gas 2. This one is basically personal preference but a safe bet is around 2000 RPM and you should still apply your breaks when decelerating
When i tried it another day rpm went super high whenever i down shift. When i go to super slow speed i keep down shifting it to 1 it’s doing the same thing (rev up super high and noise)
In sport mode, is it still in automatic mode until you start using the paddles?
It's always in automatic.
Gugan Esan Cool. Thanks!
@@Jeragon186 Always welcome mate.
Thank you
you shifted too late!
Thatswutshesaid83 nah too soon lol
RA8BIT too soon junior
@@JonnyQ408 Um, Rabbit said TOO SOON! Learn some English junior!
So if you want to break you have to shift down each number and than break?
I just want to get in a drive lol. What should the settings be on for a normal drive?
Thank you so much 👌🙏🏽
You shifted too late! naaa nannna nannaaaaa!
Can I use the paddle shifters even if not in sport mode?
I have a '16 corolla s plus with a cvt. I've always been hesitant to use the paddle shifters because I'm not positive how to properly use it. Are you supposed to let off the throttle before each shift, or make sure the drive train isn't under heavy load during each shift?
Do I let go of the gas and shift gears or do I keep my foot on the gas n pull the paddles?
Wjat if i keep 4 gears in city no move shifting?
Like I said in my other comment in last video...
give Toyota Camry a chance! Peeps!
I have a 2019. What gear should I have the car in when it's in automatic drive and not in the "manuel". I feel like it's taking too long to shift when it's in let's say 5th or 6th gear on the automatic side.
Do you have to remove your foot from the gas while upshifting?
Nope
@@BunnyAcee how about while downshifting?
Thatswutshesaid83 no, same rules. If you downshift while full throttle you will get a better launch and torque
So in other words, this is the true way to drive this car.
Those Toyota highlander 2014-2019 habe have paddle shifters?
THAN YOU JEFF!!!!!!!
Hi friend, One question, with the cvt car how do I drive in long slope down hill? using break is not good idea as I think. So how do I? In AMT we can shift to M and drive with first gear. But in CVT there is no M shift. Pls let me know.
Thank you so much! I've always wanted to use this feature but was so intimidated. But please don't hold a phone and record while driving that was super reckless for yourself and for everyone around you. Even if the road was very calm, that was very reckless.
please just shut up
how about you dont shift up when your going really fast, does it shift on it own?
I want to lear how use the peddle shifter in venza 2021, can you do a demo in a venza 2021?
can someome help me about paddle shifters? im a bit confused whenever i drive to mountain areas "uphill" where I initially put it on D mode, and suddenly its a long uphill and its still on D mode and its starting to move slow, then i try to put it on manual mode, but dont know how or what gear should i put it in 2,3 or 4 because the RPM keeps inceasing and my car seems to slow down more. and I always end up putting it back to D lol
about "downhill" I already know what to do..
thanks guys
You have more control over speed and less actual brake use even in dangerous and or Hazardous situations! Notice how you keep speed steady in Sequential/semi auto compared to automatic. In auto you notice *oops 4 miles over the speed limit or even 12 miles over because if your like me I focus 100% on road. With passengers I’m the most boring.*
But how do I know when to shift into 1st ,2nd ,3rd or fourth ? Is it at a certain km/hour ? Certain amount of rpms ?
leigham springer-sutton just by the sound of the engine, you should know when.
Yeah bro, when the engine start to startle, you gotta shut up or down.
So it’s a semi automatic then if you use paddle shifters
Does paddle shifting help with braking as well? Sort of like 1st and 2nd gear for downslopes etc.
Yes, downshifting while off the gas will engine brake.
How would this work on a hill start? Does it grab the biting point by itself of do you have to slow release on the brakes whilst giving it some power?
It’s still an automatic. So automatic clutch. Works the same as any other slap shift transmission. Have it in first, let go on the brake and it’ll start moving under its own power
So my question is...do you release the gas pedal in order to shift?
No
The gear shifter can also be used, instead of the paddle shifters,
to change gears while in this mode.
How?
Question sir, if your in the 5th gear and you need to step on a break for a little bit when turning, does it go back down to first gear? And shift again after you break? Thank you
It will go to whatever gear is appropriate. If you come to a complete stop though it will go to first.
how do u kno when to shit up or down at what mph or what is it
e30 at 2:44 🤩
Can u also use the shift lever to do that or just paddles? I like using the lever in my 09 altima. Also, Toyota doesnt use cvt transmitions right?
In some cars there are buttons on the shifter instead of paddles. I do think some Toyotas have CVTs not sure which exactly though. They’re becoming a lot more common.
Do you really need to downshift thru each gear when slowing to a stop like you did?
No it will downshift for you.
