Johann Joachim Quantz (né le 30 janvier 1697 à Oberscheden dans l'électorat de Brunswick-Lunebourg et mort le 12 juillet 1773 à Potsdam), est un compositeur baroque, flûtiste, membre de l'École de Berlin et professeur de flûte du roi Frédéric II de Prusse.
Multi-instrumentiste, il a pour premier instrument le violon mais est reconnu pour ses talents à la flûte traversière, instrument pour lequel il est l'auteur d'un traité musical parmi les plus importants du xviiie siècle.
Johann Joachim Quantz nait en 1697. Il est fils d'un forgeron de Oberscheden (électorat de Hanovre). Intéressé très tôt par la musique, il assiste régulièrement aux fêtes populaires et bals villageois avec son grand frère Jost Matthias, qui se joint parfois lui-même aux musiciens. Il est destiné à la forge et fait une année d'apprentissage, interrompue par la mort de son père en 1707. Le jeune Quantz est confié alors à son oncle, Justus Quantz, musicien de ville à Mersebourg, avec qui il commence l'apprentissage de la musique. À la mort de l'oncle, son gendre Johann Adolf Fleischhack reprend Quantz comme élève. Sa formation dure en tout cinq ans ; il a appris à jouer du violon (son instrument principal1), du hautbois, de la trompette (deuxième et troisième instruments respectivement1), du trombone, du cornet, du cor, de la flûte à bec, du basson, du violoncelle, de la viole de gambe et de la contrebasse. Il étudie également le clavecin avec un de ses proches parents organiste, Johann Friedrich Kiesewetter, et s'exerce de plus à l'harmonie et la composition1.
Comme musicien de la chambre du roi et compositeur de la cour de Potsdam, Quantz est pendant trente ans chargé d'organiser les concerts vespéraux du roi. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach et Franz Benda font partie de ce cercle élitaire de musiciens de chambre, mais seul Quantz a le privilège de critiquer en bien ou en mal le roi. Quantz écrit environ six cents œuvres dénotant pour les premières l'influence du style italien, entre autres de Vivaldi, et plus tard du style galant et de l'Empfindsamkeit. Il précise aussi que son jeu et ses compositions ont été influencés par le violoniste Johann Georg Pisendel et par Johann Adolph Hasse.
Quantz a rédigé son autobiographie en 1754 pour Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg3, complétée en 1762 pour le projet Storia della Musica du Padre Martini4.
Johann Joachim Quantz meurt à Potsdam le 12 juillet 1773, à l'âge de 76 ans, après une brève maladie. Le roi Frédéric lui fait ériger une tombe avec une statue d'Euterpe mélancolique dans l'ancien cimetière de Potsdam (de), et sa ville natale de Scheden lui dédie un monument commémoratif en 19915.
Œuvre théorique - « Essai d'une méthode pour apprendre à jouer de la flute traversiere, avec plusieurs remarques pour servir au bon goût dans la musique, le tout éclairci par des exemples et par XXIV. tailles douces, par Jean Joachim Quantz, musicien de la Chambre de Sa Majesté le Roi de Prusse » (Berlin, Voß, 1752), traduit de « Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen… », même éditeur. Ce traité est l'un des plus importants du XVIIIe siècle. Ses qualités sont louées dans les écrits de Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg, Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Mattheson, Jakob Adlung, Johann Friedrich Agricola, Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, Johann Georg Sulzer, Johann Samuel Schroeter, et il est approuvé tacitement par Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach et Leopold Mozart, dont les traités pour le clavier et le violon, parus peu après celui de Quantz, s'en inspirent et n'en divergent sur le fond que très peu1.

Johann Joachim Quantz , en 1728 fue flautista de la Capilla de Dresde en donde conoció al Rey Federico El Grande, transformándose en su maestro personal de la flauta. Quantz was also the author of a famous textbook on how to play the flute. This textbook is, together with a few other ones from the same time, an invaluable source aboutt the musical practice of late Baroque and the earliest Classical era.

Considering the vast amount of flute music this composer wrote you would think it might all become a bit dull and all the same, but it doesn't, these are wonderful works.
True. I play the flute myself. It's absolutely amazing what Quantz can make of it. He really loved this instrument. You can hear it in every single measure he composed.

This is the first time that I heard Quantz music. The author is a very good musician, although, in my opinion, not so complete in sonority as Vivaldi, Telemann, Tartini, etc. His music is nice but there are a lack of genius that characterize those ones. Even so, the music is relaxing and is playing with a superb flautist and with a very good orchestration.
Just enjoy.

@@brunotorres4160 I will 2nd and 3rd that. I was invited to attend a concert of folkloric music from (mostly Peru and Chile) South America some years ago and I was totally blown away. If someone were to suggest that again I would jump up and get tickets right away.
