Kind of late but I think the initial idea was to demonstrate how as the series goes on he is more fixuated on effy and loses his energy and will to skate and you can even tell by the happiness skating gives in the first episode as oppesed to the end where he stressed out has bags under bags under his eyes etc because of effy

I just wish Freddie didn't have to murdered off. That was maddening to me and really sucked because he's one of the most lovable characters ever. He reminded me of my best friend growing up.

I think the emptiness and boring acts of the character were the whole point. He was just plain empty, hence why he was drawn to effy based on her Image
