  • Although very rare, newborns of women with lupus are at greater risk for developing a potentially life-threatening complication known as congenital heart block. Dr. Jill Buyon of the New York University School of Medicine is a leading authority on this complication of lupus. Dr. Buyon discusses her life-long effort to study this complication and shares what has been learned and the next steps in the study of neonatal lupus.

This is interesting to me as I was born with 3rd AV block because my mom had antibodies to lupus. I'm now 22 and have had 5 pacemakers as treatment-and am doing well. I'm excited to see this being studied.

Can this go undiagnosed until the child is 8, if it was a mild stage? My son's heart rate would drop to a near stop from month 7 of pregnancy to birth. I was not diagnosed with lupus year so heart block was not looked at.He was born and they said he was fine. Now at 8 he has bradycardia and seems to be skipping a beat. Could it have been mild and not found until now?
