I read up on this matter not too long ago. The retirement age in Japan is typically 60 years old, but when Japanese people were polled, about 1/3 of participants said they'd want to continue working regardless of age for morale and for a sense of purpose in life. About 1/4 also specifically said they want to continue working after 70. They also polled workers attempting to map their motivations for continuing to work. 76% of everyone claimed it was a financial necessity, meaning they rely on their income to maintain their current living standards for themselves and their families. The rest basically said it gives them purpose/socialization/something to do. Finally, and perhaps most importantly of all, many Japanese seniors believe that staying at work keeps them mentally and physically fit. Rather than relaxing during retirement, they prefer to contribute their skills and knowledge to society. It's just a cultural thing.
