  • The São Domingos mine in Portugal has been known since antiquity, having been explored during Roman times, but it was only in the mid-19th century that large-scale production began, operating until the mid-1960s. structures and equipment that were used in the production and processing of ore, such as the large open-pit mine known as Corte, and the Achada do Gamo industrial complex, as well as a village where the mine's workers and administrators lived, Aldeia da São Domingos Mine. The ore was transported by railway to the river port of Pomarão, on the Guadiana River, where it was transferred to boats destined for other parts of the country or abroad. The exploration created very serious environmental problems in the surrounding region, mainly due to water contamination by slag, which was left in place after the mine closed.
