I didn't stop playing because I was burnt out with necromancy. I stopped playing because the hero pass immediately after necromancy was way too much whiplash. It was insulting.

@@dkotaclark If Jagex actually got away with selling pvm buffs there would be nickle and dimes for every boss and more nerfs for items to sell replacement buffs. RSGuy didn't even mention the Animate Dead nerf which I believe existed to sell damage mitigation.
Death cost was a game changer. I don't stress about dying at a boss in learning. T90 power armor & weapons EOF and RoD.... 53k death cost. Simply amazing
I know I've taken many a hiatus after a death, probably most often from Wyverns because 2 target me at the same time nuking me. Now it is less infuriating.
Worst thing Jagex did to the playerbase.
Jagex is catering to veteran players, and pretending they're helping the new ones.
Death costs weren't expensive for low tier players, it was never a hinderance to entering PvM. Now the economy is inflating at a pace that new players can't afford bonds, gear, supplies, etc. because the veterans players can print money with no risk.
I absolutely loved the Christmas Village update this year too, nothing was locked behind TH which always saddens me when they did stuff like that for ironmen which made certain items completely impossible to attain but not this year. And it just felt like a really round and well polished event.
One of my favorite things that happened was the whoopise we messed up that a thok event.
I miss the caldron with overloads and picking reaper assignment. That had been so fun.
As someone who been maining as a skiller, thok event was enough for me to get mems and max my main for the 3rd time. I miss the cauldrons so much. Wish they could be a buyable option where we add in our own potions. And make it so it's not only elder ovls we can add but any potion with a timer. That way we can add any other ovl variants or not be forced to waste salves
Edit: I was able to get my zuk cape and 1-99 in those 2 weeks. Could've hit 120 if I wasn't bossing a bit post 99.
I'm also in the camp on not having felt burn out from necromancy, I loved what it did with RS3's combat system and was so excited for what it could potentially mean for combat going forward. Sure it was a bit overtuned but nothing a numbers pass couldn't have resolved. To have all that excitement and build up in my mind that combat was going to be incredible going forward. To see a "core gameplay update" queued right after it, this was the most incredible time to be playing RS3. Then we got hero pass and it was a huge slap back to reality that for the time being, MTX is a core part of RS3's gameplay. That needs to change.
I think going forward itll be interesting to see how long jagex walks on eggshells after that hero pass mess. It sounds like the santa grotto event was much more in line with what should be the standard for runescape events (i was off playing leagues at the time so i missed it) but lets all just remember that not only was the timing on hero pass absolutely deliberate to try and maximize profits, but also that it had a dedicated team of mods ready to maintain it. This means the suits who dont even know what a rune is expected this to work and WILL be trying it again. Lets just hope the players remember the feeling of rage but also community power the next time it comes back

My favorite update of the year and all time since I started playing in 2003 was Necromancy. Loved everything about the skill, the race, the quests, the content, and the impact it had on the game and my pvm experience. It didn’t make me a pvm grand master, but it made me enjoy pvming at the bosses I liked way more than ever.
In 2023, I downloaded unreal engine, learned a bit, bought some assets and Stephen Ulibarri’s Gameplay Ability System course, and I’m currently in the process of setting up the basics. Plan to eventually have a mini dungeon set up with rs3 style combat. I hadn’t been tracking necromancy but just a few months after I started my quest necromancy came out and addressed some of my issues with combat. However I still want to try a combat system modeled after RS3’s that isn’t on the giant coordinate grid or 600ms logic ticks. I also won’t have to make overloads when I’m done :)
Edit: made the overloads joke before I finished the video. That’s hilarious lol
There was bad marketing BoF isn’t the finale, the storyline has another year this was the mid-point of the story, when they said finale they meant the final fort update for the year. The first season of 2024 is fort Forinthry part 2.

Having to fight against Jagex for a month straight to get them to drop Hero Pass was both tiring and a hard wake-up call.
The dreadful Halloween "event" looks even worse than initially because of the outstanding Christmas event. Truly a year of contrasts.
And while I know it only affects a very small subset of players, Jagex, please give Linux some love. The official Linux game client is seemingly outdated, and the launcher isn't even available for Linux. We rely on a community-driven effort (amazing work, USA-RedDragon) centered around getting the Windows client and Windows launcher to run on top of Linux.
Funny enough the 2 weeks of broken rod is what helped me learn p7 zammy.
I kept dying and not understanding what was going on because it all happens pretty fasy once the runes die.
But that extra time let me see it all enough to finally start to get it all.
It was way too good for players that were competent enough to truely abuse it though.
The Dinoarrows thing about fletcher's workshop, it does actually help a bit. It reduces the anima cost per arrow from 3 to 1, now to mains this might not seem like a big deal because anima is dirt cheap. But for the average ironman, if you haven't camped GWD3 a lot, it absolutely helps.
Also you skipped over the animate dead nerf which came with FSOA rebalancing which I think affected a lot more players than the FSOA changes did.
I also think Greater Sonic Wave isn't that bad, it's a cheap small upgrade for players who don't have gconc yet. You could argue they should save up for Gconc and dw mage instead but I think it's good to have smaller upgrades, especially since getting a decent tier staff is a lot cheaper than decent tier DW mage. Funnily enough I had the levels to get Greater Sonic Wave on my ironman before I got gconc from Kerapac.
The fact the Animate dead nerf stopped effecting typeless damage is what killed it for a lot of people. Arraxor darkness path, Telos Fonts, etc it was not great when almost immediately after that darkness comes out which is a straight 20% damage reduction with no need to wear tank armor.
The Staff nerfs where also worse. They threw the opinion of everyone who did not own one out the window which is not a great way to treat the future player base. Besides the fact that it was what the whole economy of water runes where based on it.
The issue with iron for gsonic is that you’ll probably have an easier time getting gconc than gsonic. Armored phantoms are not weak slayer monsters (let’s presume necro doesn’t exist because it didn’t at the time)
@@peterkirk8510 Risen Ghosts also drop it, 85 slayer and definitely doable to kill before you can reliably kill NM Kerapac efficiently.
Gsonic has use if you're a filthy weapon camper. Inq staff with the enchantment and greater sonic beats dual wield outside of fsoa. Unfortunately not worth it for a dirty 4taa'er

I reckon with the fort, they should have had an effect where if a pulse core or those exp buffs from that coin or enchanted staff or whatever its called affected everyone within the area of the fort received the buff. That would promote the spreading out of players during dxp, and spread people out to use the other facilities without fomo the pulse core buffs. people would have to choose between standing at the fletching area for its unique buff and miss the pulse core or stand at the west bank in order to get the pulse core buff.
pulse core is the worst and most annoying item, cant ever play the fucking game without thinking about it, 10 percent is absurd

Great video. I wasn't fully on RS in 2023 I jumped on and off pretty hardcore cuz I spent so much time playing FSW the year prior. But Necro was awesome and hero pass was annoying to see run so many people away. Really only on cuz its dxp atm. Got 120 construction yesterday and working on 120 necro atm.

I liked the threat in some ways. The wilderness should still be an area which feels a scary place to be in. The ghosts (revenanets) roaming the wildy, the volcano, random mobs spawning and hunting you down. I'm sure it has potential. Opt-In + threat > bigger profit (rewarding) // opt-out + threat > good profit. etc
The hero pass did unfortunately put a big break in my desire to play the game.
What really annoyed me too, was that the cosmetics in it actually looked good and way better done than a lot of cosmetics in the recent times
Max cash update was def the best update imo. Waited years for that!

I just hope the Black Party hat comes back in more events besides just Christmas every year. Seems like it can only be owned by the rich players or the lucky ones since merchs like to manipulate the price of high desired items.

I've never seen a fire un the kitchen. There's usually a portable right by the static range though
As someone who no longer plays P2P RS3 and only checks into F2P every once and a while, this is great. My only feedback would be to add timestamps of each month in case people want to jump to a specific month easily.
My favorite update by far ia runefest!!!! I will see you at the spoon! Ryan, Kash, Jamma, and Sahel I am overwhelmed with excitement to come back to runefest! Like it shows at the end of the highlight video in 2019... "I will be back no matter what!" -Pyro.
Necromancy was my favorite update, It allows me to boss without all the blunders of and costs of switch scape , it makes more sense having everything you need built into one combat form instead of like using range eof with melle and all sorts of switches. I appreciate being able to do harder bosses now that I can save my inventory spaces for food and potions instead of items, also able to boss with people I normally never could have because it's harder for people to do enough dps sometimes with how difficult pvm was before necro. on the down side to it a lot of my super good pvm friends dislike necro because they feel it makes the game too easy and less enjoyable .
This was a good year, I love Fort Forinthry and Necromancy is quite cool. I hope that they do something similar to the yak track again and make wildy more threatening somehow.
the woodcutters grove needs one of every tree type imo, Also as far as overloads go, I think the fix for them would be to make overloads produce a 1:1 output or even a 0.5:1 output, its very time consuming with many steps, but also 5 potions (or now 6 potions) turning into a single 3 dose overload for one makes no sense and for 2 is extremely time consuming for regular players and even moreso for the ironman community
I agree!! Woodcutting is not a "usefull" as far as i would rank it.
I always hated how a "guild" is useful up till lv 40 or so, thereafter, you still have to run halfway across the map.
Can they rework regular trees to be like other trees where we can potentially get more logs per trees???

I would love to see attack and strength combined into one skill with the combat updates. Make it similar to magic and ranged. I wouldn’t see a problem with the exp combined either since we’ve trained both with melee.
Everytime I log in to RS3 I see some MTX pop up and instantly log out. The stress of feeling like you have to look at every new little thing because of fear of missing out just drains me. Don't get that on OSRS even if I return after years. On RS3 you feel anxiety just quitting for a week in case something new happens that messes up what you're doing in-game. While I love RS3 because I played it for so long, I actually hope that it stays the way it is or maybe even gets worse, just so that I never feel obligated to play ever again. And that they capitalise on OSRS and never do to OSRS what they did with RS3. Without OSRS I would find it very difficult to quit RS3. It's very addicting. But OSRS is far less addicting. Hopefully I will be able to gain control again.
Rs guy just need to be community manager for Jagex.. this man can articulate clear as day, gives a crap about the game and the community! Ryan, great video good job!

The black partyhat was announced to be released on 2019 or 2020 when all that "only black lives matters" movement happened and all of its controversial ideals that sprung up. Rs3 Jagex then said they'll wait for a better time as it was a hot topic whereas OSRS still released it for Christmas

I enjoyed Necromany on release, but shortly after I realised how much of the game it just killed overnight. I was convinced the 'core update' would be rebalancing the other combat skills, and when Hero Pass was announced, that was the final straw. Haven't played since. So much damage was done by that one update.
This year was really good for RS3 but also a year where I straight up stopped playing for a lot of reasons that were bothering me for a while, and that was 2 months before necromancy (I played for like 3 days during necro release found it bit too strong but ok and stopped again). Hero Pass just made it easier to not return because it was exactly what I was worried about since first yak track release.

I was so glad they got rid of the wilderness threat system. I would always get hit by that damn volcano because i was too slow to turn on prayer with mobile lol. It would make me panic hahah

As bad as the Fort quest line is, that and Hero Pass can't out cringe the original EoC.
I'm still salty that we were told we could multi damage class eg wand plus offhand crossbow and it never happened.
After 17 years I stopped playing after 2022 christmas event. I'd finally hit 200m on all combat skills and achieved my childhood dream of a White Partyhat. I logged in for the first time today after just over a year and I'm still unsure if I want to play, I feel like this may finally be it for me and RS. What is there to do now?

Necro really opened up a lot of bossing to more players. It has a great balance between aoe, burst, and steady dps. I love the conjures. I hate doing rituals lol
I do somewhat miss playing, I was ports req off comp cape when the hero pass came out and I uninstalled because of the decisions and direction they were going in. It's really unfortunate they went forward with that update. Killed off my entire friend group including myself.
true... sometimes i miss rs3 but literally my whole clan just switched to osrs, we split into a couple of group ironman groups and its kinda fun, but its sad cuz literally not a single one of them if ever thinking of coming back to rs3, the only things that happen now is we go to check new updates, get dissapointed because osrs updates seem a bit more fresh compared to rs3 and then dont play rs3 at all until the next bigger update
you cant even light a fire in the kitchen last i saw, they removed it when they updated the bank chest making the kitchen useless outside of soups. also the fletch workshop works for all fletch items, including gold bamboo and potentially the ecb.
Hi im the special minority. Hero pass gave me a reason to jump on each day and finish daily tasks etc. Going back to the shit yak track you cant reasonably finish without buying bonds is gonna make me sad. Besides that necro got me 4k telos and since then every item drop in game basically feels worthless so havent played since i got that haha

The kitchen web perk is because you now have sharpened kitchen knifes, because your player character owns a kitchen now. Its a little bit of a reach maybe but i like it because its a funny little thing

I dont get the gconc v gsonic complaint. Isnt one for 2h and other for dual wield? I dont do switching and only have a nox staff so I got gsonic for that. I imagine there are others in the same boat.
I don't have the exact numbers, but from what I have been told Gconc is such a massive upgrade in DPS that if you're not switching Cywir + Gconc outdamages even FSOA + gsonic. Please don't take my word for it, do some research on your own, but I was in your exact situation about a year ago and sold my nox for a gconc codex and don't regret it.
Great video. But a small suggestion. You are constantly looking off to the side instead of at the camera. Which feels kind of weird when it’s conversation style. Maybe center the notes or whatever you are reading?
Great suggestion. I wasn't even reading notes for this (my greenscreen is 15 feet back from my monitor) but I will absolutely do a better job staring into the lense next time!
Last time my brother and i stopped playing was because of the lack of bad luck mitigation in the game. We got a combined kc of around 1200-1400 raksha kills for 1!!! Singular greater chain codex, and no grico to show for it.
My brother also did ambi a bunch with no significant drop. This is unacceptable and needs work
The hero pass I think was more of a push from the hedge fund company that owns Jagex

Okay now bear with me what if we added dark onyx cores to vorkath hard mode as an incredibly rare chase drop? Have flash events be a better drop chance and be limited to 6 or 7 times a day but have hard mode vorkath be for people who have scheduling issues and can do high level pvm
looking back on it hero pass didn't kill the game necro making the whole game redundant killed my motivation to log in, The direction they are heading with combat is not helping either.

Necromancy has gotten me back into the game and its been fantastic. Long time osrs player but i havent been focusing rs3 since maybe 2014. It's sad to me that so many people left again due to the hero pass and i understand why but id love to see the game grow more again. I'm very glad to still have my original account and looks like we're both coming up on the 20 year cape as ive also played for just over 18 and a half years

Wish you'd mentioned the AD changes or the daily challenge removal to reduce the impact of dailyscape and daily mtx, and then the failure as daily challenges returned, just as bad as they were before.
Do people not like daily challenges?
People like them because of the free th keys you get, whilst not understanding it's the free sample designed to tempt you into buying more keys to hit that guaranteed reward if you just buy just a few more.

Death cost was the best way to start the year and had me so excited for what's to come, but then necromancy came out and completely killed it for me.. I still watch your videos but I haven't played since 😞.
I got back to playing rs3 after i got burnt out with OSRS, and i got to see Necro and the Hero Pass coming to the game, and, altough as an IM this doesnt giva a lot of advantages, i really felt that rs3 was going to die and be a game of whales. BUT i really respect the fact that the devs really listened this time, this is somethung that NEVER happens in other MMOs and seeing that, even with the fact that playing RS3 not being an IM is absolutelly dead to me, and that i lost the will to play with my really good main bc of that, i can still enjoy it as an IM without needing to lose a life with the OSRS grinds that doesnt make sense anymore.
The FSoA "rebalance = nerf" took way the utility of the staff, no more healing, no more massive damage if you get lucky on your crits. The recurring nature should return, but have it capped not tied to crit chance.
Personally found it to just make it a lot more balanced more so than a nerf, made it less reliant on randomness, but we also got anima core of sliske for a bit of dps gain on tectonic, but I get the sentiment, I’ll be pissy when they remove 4taa so makes sense 😂

2023 was feeling pretty good, but the way necromancy transitioned into hero pass was incredibly disappointing. 2023 was the first time in two years I touched OSRS and I've been glued to that ever since
looking back it was really hero pass that killed my motivation for the game, but watching this gave me a little more hope and a little more motivation to check out some of the new content i havent even given a chance to over the past year, like wc grove and some of the new quests. happy new year ryan !!

Most of the best updates this year were QOL fixes like death costs, the launcher and extended lobby timer. The new content as a whole was either terrible, forgettable or merely acceptable but with room for improvement. Jagex rarely goes back to improve content these days and when they do it takes far too long. Players lose interest.
The FSOA changes just ripped the fun right out of Magic (which many players had heavily invested time & money into) and Necromancy has devalued all bosses and character progression because it does everything anyone could need. They are killing the game with greed and incompetence.
The holiday event for Christmas was great but many friends were so burned out they didn't even log in for that :(
I stopped playing when Irons could PvM with Mainscape as that ruined the ironman experience for me. They should've just release group ironman instead of going the route that they did IMO. It is what it is though but I thank Jagex for the 20 years of fun and memories.
Stopped playing after 99+ necromancy. It just felt so boring. I’ve played since 2005 consistently. I want to come back but do not have any reason to.
Agree, the grind getting to 120 necro is soooo boring. I can't force myself to do it.
Best year for me... rasial is my New favorite Boss...its just a money printer for me...still slaying him for 2-3 hours a day
The Christmas event was incredible, though I would appreciate if the cosmetics were automatically in your wardrobe instead of needing to keepsake it.
This is being changed next week (I think) and keepsake keys used will be refunded

Overall an ok year, I am missing actual playable content tho. Necromancy gives a new way to play the game however actual new playable content was limited this year to Rasial & Vorkath. The rest of the activities already exist. I hope next year brings something big on a elder god wars level of playable content. Game is getting too afkable.

hero pass just killed my will to play the game, its heartbreaking. i just dont have the desire to play anymore and i think that was the final straw for me
Some people may enjoy it but the fomo-paper enslavement each year is maddening, three years of "be on constantly for paper so you will get the golden ticket item" and you never once get it is absolutely draining, I wish the events didn't exist at all, I'd rather log on to play the game itself, not for these events. It feels predatory.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I played it a fair bit and did actually get a golden present.
If thats how you truly feel then just play the game. Having a rare cosmetic shouldnt change your level of enjoyment. At least it hasnt for me and ive been around since christmas crackers and all i have is a santa hat

I used to be able to put in the wrong username and no caps in my password and it worked but I eventually got the Jagex account
I returned to RS3 after 4 years and was apprehensive about necromancy given I was so used to the 3 original combat style. But now necromancy is my main style of combat. The deathcost also worked for me as I remembered back then I paid alot ind eathcost and gave up PVMing. This return to runescape I started to learn PVM and with the reduction in deathcost and with the aid of necromany I am able to do much more PVM and even take on Hardmode kerepac, arch, zuk, and enraged zammy =) *of course with your PVM guide as well. So thanks Ryan!

Best holiday events were done by the original Jagex. The new Grinchex owners don't have a clue.
Death costs.
There should be NO death costs for ANY player until that player gets one normal mode kill. Death costs should be 50% until a player gets one hard mode kill.
Everyone can't boss. Everyone pays to play. PVMers may now start complaining.

Rs3 has so much potential but so much bs with it that holds its back.
I tried to focus on updates that either:
1. are currently playable in game
Or
2. For limited time events, those that had interesting furure implications (ex. Porter buff)
If I covered every single patch week and every single treasure hunter promo we'd be looking at a 2 hour long video, where half of it was stuff that you couldn't currently access.
I've consistently been against TH / the Halloween event (which was brought up when comparing it to the Xmas village) and there was no effort to "hide" anything, I just don't think anyone cares to hear about a treasure hunter promo 6 months after it's ended.
why use a 5/5 system for ranking when you use decimals? beats the purpose.
No matter what anyone claims, there will NEVER be a year more contro than the the year EOC was added to the game. That singular update quite literally split the community. I like both versions, but it is a statistical fact that pre eoc is the better version of the game.
Idk what you're on about by saying NM Vorkath is fine, it takes twice as long to kill as rasial and you'd have to kill it 1000 times to make a set of terrible t90 gear, the same amount of kills at rasial would make you a set and a half of full t95 and weapons on average. The people who can do that boss and skip will just kill rasial and the people who can't skip kill it so slow and take so much damage it's not worth their time. It's also stupid the most efficient way to kill it is have one super good player solo it and everyone else join the instance once vorkaths dead
Honestly Jagex needs to increase normal combat experience after necro. They nerfed combat exp into oblivion. I went from 1mxp/hr at level 85 to getting 100k xp/hr. So now I need to spend 100 hours x 6 for each skill just to get combat ready? It feels horrible.
if you’re only getting 100k an hour that is quite literally a skill issue
