I saw them live 4 times in my city and paid a premium to be front row and feel the music as well as see them enjoy what they were doing that was making me so happy.
My Dad loved this song he would play it on his guitar and sing, he had a lovely voice, i lost him 2 years ago i was 34, i miss him so much, this song makes me cry but also makes me smile, i can close my eyes and still see him playing this song to me, love you daddy xxx
I can completely relate to your post. It's good to allow those feelings up and have a good cry, sometimes. I see times like this as a visit from my own (late) Dad. I hope the song can bring some sort of peace to you.
Funny you mentioned that (a year ago). I was just thinking about my own dad who passed in 2018. He was a talented, but humble musician who, when he finished playing a song forward would play it backward. His kid brother (still living) says that it was because as boys, they started a two-man band and only had enough money for sheet music for like 10 songs. They had to improvise.... Thanks, Dad, we miss you.
i'm thinkin' a tie with Like a Rolling Stone, with a very similar vibe. P P & M were such a massive contribution to the Folk scene, the artistry they showed with Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind made it the most important song of that movement IMHO
Had this song stuck in my head all day. Used to listen to this record when my grandma passed. Raised on Peter Paul and Mary and I love them so much. I know this is a cover but I love this version
Yes, Bob Dylan could really turn a phrase. This and 'Blowin' In The Wind' are two of his songs that Peter Paul & Mary made into major hits when I was a boy.
Yes one of the great lines of all time from a song, and to think he was aged only 21 or 22 when he could come up with lyrics like this.Just exemplifies the Genius of the man.
Jeffrey Kaufmann I can't agree. For me, what really sells this version is the, for lack of a better word, acting. The seekers just sing. It's technically proficient, but it lacks the emotion of this version.
Hmmm. Dearly LOVE Judith's voice and singing, and The Seekers. However, if you really want to hear them at their best, check out: ruclips.net/video/wOKDT0S2O3c/видео.html Studio recording tied to live video. Now THIS is great. However, while music, like art, is in the EAR of the beholder; and as a musician and guitarist of 56+ years, with a three-year stint as a studio engineer, producer, musician and writer, I can say that their version does not begin to compare to that of PP&G. The harmony of Peter Paul & Mary is right up front and in your face, with little studio enhancement, with three of the best voices ever recorded. Just two guitars, string bass and three voices ... as raw and pure as it can get, and yet, they pull it off with incredible perfection, warmth and artisanship. But, it's all good. Two incredibly wonderful groups, playing an incredibly wonderful genre of music: FOLK!
Mine too. The first version I heard, and unsurpassed. This song somehow lends itself to a wide variety of musical interpretations. Eric Clapton does a fantastic version, but it is so different from this you can hardly recognize it as the same song. And there is a silly version that was a hit, you needn't Wonder Who I mean. :)
My dad turned me onto Peter, Paul and Mary --- he used to play and sing this song; it is a beautiful tune and is performed so perfectly that it makes me weep with nostalgia!
The thing about this performance is that it is completely bare bones. Just absolutely expert finger picking and gorgeous unique harmonies. Even in this recording straight off the old vinyl! No production tweaks necessary. They are unparalleled. Even though this is probably the meanest breakup song in existence.
If you analyze this song lyric for lyric its not mean at all- its more disappointment, defeat and understanding of the reality of true love- its the realization that a soulmate never gave them a chance to be real partners to begin with, always playing games of the flesh and mind rather than having a conversation. Hypothetically, if the girl in the song tells him "Ok im rdy to settle down with you , and make a family" , what does the narrator do ? Gives a few hints in the song that he'd go running back ... He is asking "What if" throughout all his negativity, trying to deter himself from thinking(again) that it could happen. "I once loved a woman , a child im told" - The meanest line in the whole song, is probably not even the narrators words, as he is attributing them to someone else (possibly a friend :P). Having been in this exact situation as the narrator, and as the friend of the narrator, this is way way past the "mean" part of the breakup. Its like 2-5-10 years down the line in the timeline :P
Fall, 1966, I was a homesick college freshman a long way from home trying to pass engineering courses and having a tough time doing so. Liked to listen to this song in the afternoon when I got back from class, with that long straight blond hair Mary was every college boy's dream girl in the 60s
Reading this makes me wonder what it would be like to live during your era sir! Im always curious about the feeling if i ever existed in the 60s - 70s.
loeyexo, "... makes me wonder what it would be like to live during your era ..." Me, too. And I did. I just can't imagine how to explain what it was like, though. Have you ever seen the old TV show "Wonder Years"? Or the movies " Mississippi Burning", "Forrest Gump", or "Good Morning Vietnam"? They might give you some idea, but, really, you had to be there, as they say. Even all of us who were sometimes don't know what to make of it all, though.
That’s a really good way of saying it. Wishing for something while knowing it’s not real or at least not the way you want. I’m still more a fan of Dylan’s version but I’m glad I found this comment.
+Eunice Henriques You should Listen to Winter Song by The Head and the Heart and anything by Jose Gonzales. They're very decent musicians for this decade :)
I'm a thinkin' and a wonderin' all the way down the road I once loved a woman, a child I'm told I gave her my heart but she wanted by soul. What great lyrics.
This is the first version of the song I ever heard when I was growing up, and remains my favorite version. And I'm a huge Dylan fan, but PP&M nailed it.
Hi Felix I just wanted to suggest you to hear this song coverd by a band called Jane boardox, it's one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard..

Every artist gets their influence from somewhere else .. someone previous. This is what I love about passing it down. In my opinion, Peter Paul and Mary do a very fine reverence of old folk music. I have yet to see a better threesome.
I well remember when this song came out.I was was only 8 years old and I purchased this EP.It was one of the first records I purchased[,this and ''puff the magic dragon'' a song which had tremendous appeal to children].,and of course at that age did not understand the meaning of the lryics.I just loved the finger-picking,and the tune of the song. Here in Australia, this song was released on an EP that on the front cover had the three of them linking arms. The EP was called ''in the wind'' and also featured the song ''blowin in the wind'',.another song I loved but once again, did not understand the lryics.I am now agred 67,and it is only when you experience life and get older that you can understand the meaning of the lryics.I belive Dylan wrote ''Dont think twice'' when he was 21 or 22.My god for a man that age to come up with the line''I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul''just exemplifies the genius of Bob Dylan
People back then have really good taste in music. I , as the kid from the millennial age, do really enjoy this kind of music. I couldn't help myself as I keep on listening to this. How precious. And, yes, They have great music all the time. Peter, Paul , and Mary. 💖
I am adopted. I was adopted by two lovely Parents. These parents split up eventually, and it ended up that every other weekend, my mom would drive me up to visit the other parent. In the car, my mom would always play this song, along with a bunch of other old music like Tracy Chapman and The Monkees. Every time I hear this song, I am reminded of how wonderful a mom she was. She was strong, wise, and had great taste in music. I love you Mom. This song is for you
My parents were big fans of them. I have many good warm memories of being a little kid in the mid 60s sitting around at night listening to this and other songs.
This song just touches me, I'm in a moment in my life where this song really just says what I'm going through and it speaks for me. I just feel attached to this song now.
Why would anyone thumbs down this? It’s absolutely beautiful. Although 70 million people voted for trump for a 2nd term and I don’t understand that either. Oh well, at least there’s good music out there!
It's easy not to notice the excellent guitar picking in PP&M recordings. Listen to this song again, concentrating on the instrumental rather than vocal aspect.
I just turned 21 and idk why I love old songs so muchh. The orig ver of this song is good but i also love this rendition 🤗 my mom used to play this song a lot when I was a kid, so good to hear this again 🥰
I'm an older guy (man I like saying that lol) but yet the sound of this song remains a mystery which I feel both happy and cheated as I've honestly came to realize I've not heard it in all my years! I must've heard it but I'll tell ya I'm gonna say NO because the flow of the song already has me playing it a few times now and it's gone into my saved playlist so I know I'd have known it all these years. Regardless....what a story and harmony!
It was from Peter, Paul and Mary that I learned my preference in music lay toward Folk and Folk Rock, not the Andy Williams and Bing Crosby my mother listened to nor the Hank Williams of my father. I grew up to add a lot of one genre and a little of others until my favorites list is pretty eclectic, but I always slide back to the folk and especially these three.
A unique & outstanding version is Eric Clapton's at Madison Square Garden, Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary party. A surprising performance that actually caused people to start a standing ovation before he even finished. He was one with his guitar, swaggering, edgy & mean - like it's supposed to be. I almost couldn't breathe. Didn't appear on first run DVD, instead as a bonus cut later on the "deluxe" album.
I learned to play this in the key of G nearly sixty years ago using what I called the F position in the third fret. I can still sort of do it, but my fingers won't bend any more, so it doesn't have the impact it did. I never learned all the words, and one of my sons had to tell me who wrote it much later. He's a real musician. I was shown how to play four chords when I was nine, and pretty much managed from there. Hearing PP&M brings back a part of the time in my life I miss. Can't say I miss everything about the time, but I was privileged and didn't really understand what others were dealing with.
It is sad but no one makes music the way you guys used to make, the old great music. I still listen to you and always love it too ! Thanks for your great music ! Benoit, greetings from Montreal !
Reminds me of being in the Infantry in 1967 and not know ing ever if I would see home again. I had a LOVE at home at home and I thought I would never see her again.
This recording was released within a year or two of my birth so I literally have known & loved it , since I began recognizing radio & music ( sometime in either elementary school or possibly Jr High School ages). Hard for me to conceive, that this means btw 40-50 yrs [ its release was early / mid 1960s, I wasn't especially focused on radio, until approx 10 yrs later], but that's what the arithmetics produce... Anyway, even though I have the melody, the lyrics & PPM's particular recording/ performance entirely memorized... I just listened to it again ( Nov 2022) and it STILL makes tears come to my eyes. Profound effects from Mr Dylan's writing and the utterly exquisite, delicate; yet somehow , also powerful performance by PPM & the bass player, not as known or as often described. I found two different fellows' names as playing bass w their recordings/ performances, in different articles....
Back in the 60s this was the first song I learned and sang in folk clubs in London. The fingerpicking style used by Peter and Paul is named after Mary's father. The "Travis Pick"
I wish you could have been alive (as was I) back when this music and the passion that drove it was fresh. Those were heady and awesome days, and my deepest regret is that the visionary wave (that actually had a considerable amount of influence back then) lost it's force. We were all about peace and harmony and sharing and taking care of the earth. I will never understand what happened to all the hippies. They vanished. Anyway, Godspeed to you young folks!!!
I have heard this awesome song countless times during my life. In my 72, still brings tears to my eyes...
77 years old. Me too!

This is Dylan's best composition. And this is the best rendition of the song.
Agreed

Real music I will never forget.
I AM 80 HEARD THIS SONG WHEN I WAS 15! IT IS A MASTERPEACE!
Rest in Peace, Peter Yarrow, knowing that you changed the heart of a generation.
I was such a PP&M fan in the 60's & 70's. They sang everything so good. This is but one example. Such a great song from Dylan.
Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this ruclips.net/video/Ds4h0Q6GQHg/видео.html
Hey I am still a fan. How are you
It was great music. Thanks to PP&M, Dylan, the Byrds, and all.
One of my favourites. Their covers generally turned out to be the best versions.
Isn't it great to hear the words to the song!!
I'm 33 now, and this has been my favorite song since I was about 20. Why don't people make music like this anymore?
Because people are just shells of people now?
Had this song stuck in my head all day. Used to listen to this record when my grandma passed. Raised on Peter Paul and Mary and I love them so much. I know this is a cover but I love this version
oh yes. This is the folk-singer Group of my youth. I love them. Mary RiP
"I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul" POWERFUL LYRICS.

Just the finest folk song ever written, and one of the greatest performances ever laid down. That's all.
I think you are correct
Hadn't heard this til Ted Lasso season 3. What a beautiful rendition.
How could anyone dis this song? This is probably the greatest harmony song ever recorded. And the best harmony group ever recorded.
Tonetwisters the Seekers version is way better not just because of the voices but the overall sound.
Jeffrey Kaufmann I can't agree. For me, what really sells this version is the, for lack of a better word, acting. The seekers just sing. It's technically proficient, but it lacks the emotion of this version.
I always come back to this recording! It's special!

I love PPM but the Beach Boys were the greatest harmony rock group and Heroes and Villains contained stupendous harmony. Cheers
The world is fortunate that their music could be recorded for future generations to enjoy. :)
Beautiful song. I saw them live at Massey Hall, Toronto in September 1966. I loved them then, I love them now!
This is my favorite rendition, all due respect to Dylan.

I know I’m gonna sound like the typical “old person” but no one can objectively say that music today is better than this. No one.
Harmony, melody, and vocals rolled into one great song.
A perfect balance between grief, denial and acceptance

Another great final theme for Ted Lasso, season three, episode 4.😀

Amazing talent, harmony and ENUNCIATION. You can understand every word they are singing.
and you can hear this in dylan's vocals. no slurred words just perfect articulation.
This has always been favorite version of this song. How 52 people can down vote this is beyond me.
agreed, my favorite version too
My favorite Bob Dylan song. Giving up on a love that was never there.

Music at it's best and those harmonies coupled with the interplay of the guitars.
Great! Heard that song by this 3 guys about 30 years ago and I found it back now. Great feelings brigs. Thnks my friend. Greetings from Argentina.
It is sad but no one makes music the way you guys used to make, the old great music. I still listen to you and always love it too ! Thanks for your great music ! Benoit, greetings from Montreal !
I gave her my heart, but she wanted my soul,,HELL YES!!!
Reminds me of being in the Infantry in 1967 and not know ing ever if I would see home again. I had a LOVE at home at home and I thought I would never see her again.
I loved hearing you play this.... I miss u
Beautiful song..... how did these guys know exactly who I would feel two decades before I was born?
This recording was released within a year or two of my birth so I literally have known & loved it , since I began recognizing radio & music ( sometime in either elementary school or possibly Jr High School ages).
Hard for me to conceive, that this means btw 40-50 yrs [ its release was early / mid 1960s, I wasn't especially focused on radio, until approx 10 yrs later], but that's what the arithmetics produce...
Anyway, even though I have the melody, the lyrics & PPM's particular recording/ performance entirely memorized...
I just listened to it again
( Nov 2022) and it STILL makes tears come to my eyes. Profound effects from Mr Dylan's writing and the utterly exquisite, delicate; yet somehow , also powerful performance by PPM & the bass player, not as known or as often described. I found two different fellows' names as playing bass w their recordings/ performances, in different articles....
Great song, brings me back to my youth.
Great song sung by a great trio! Thanks for posting ! :)
Back in the 60s this was the first song I learned and sang in folk clubs in London. The fingerpicking style used by Peter and Paul is named after Mary's father. The "Travis Pick"
Mary 'Travers'. She and Merle were not related at all.
Also covered, most bizarrely, by "The Wonder Who?". So, I put that, this and the original in my Four Seasons playlist. Thanks for the upload!
Peaceful! Can't even explain how I feel, just like a peaceful afternoon I lie down on a wheelchair near the lake, see the sunset with my lover.
Never ending voices. The type you hear when you go to the golden gates👼
"Never ending voices." - that's a good one. The vibrations linger in the air long after the song is over.
Brings a tear to my eye.
I hear this for the first time now in 2019. Very good version indeed.
