    I've heard the statement that the Remake and Rebirth preserve the combat of the original a few times, and maybe I'm missing something, but that isn't really true. It's more real time with a pause, as playing the game to build ATB still requires movement, attacks, and blocks from the player, and the pause to use Limit or ATB is extremely minimalistic. The system reminds me more of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 than original FF7.

      You’re absolutely right. There’s one big misconception I had when filming this and that’s that the “classic” combat was turn based like the original. After reading this comment I dove into it and found out that the “classic combat” isn’t even available in Rebirth, and in 7 it’s not quite turn based like before, it’s like you described. Should have paid more attention to that, thanks for bringing it up!

      You're far from the only person to say that about the combat. I've heard the incorrect comparison before original and remake/sequel's versions ever since the first gameplay trailer all the way back in 2019 or so.
      Good on you for digging into the systems on the Remake and Rebirth though. That's the sign of a good creator. @@GooCrewGaming

    Imo Final Fantasy games especially the older ones like VI, VII, VIII and IX have just so much charme and soul in it. You have this banter between characters, funny little moments that made you laugh or just simply dorky charakters. That is something that i was missing in XV and XVI. They had the same continuety with some elements like moogles and chocobos but something was missing. 7 rebirth has that again. If you can give it a try

    I've been playing all sorts of final fantasy, kingdom hearts, odd games like the bouncer, and Ehrgeiz etc. From an young age.
    As I got older, I gotten less and less invested with ongoing franchises (particularly kingdom hearts and final fantasy) and been looking for new adventures.
    In square enix's case, I am not a fan of their new direction overall but I find myself unable to drop Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth and inevitably Part 3.
    There's two major reasons. Nostalgia and Closure.
    Yeah I love Final Fantasy VII. And it hooked me since they knew how popular it was for my and older generations. I was devoted for another trip down in memory lane only with a new spin which I'm all open for.
    But the problem I have with it is that simply this game is not meant for me. It's meant for the next generation of gamers. And it can be kinda frustrating despite more or less its familiar ground only enhanced to modern times standard of mechanics.
    Rebirth, for example, rewards veterans greatly in honoring alot of things that made the game great and more for those following its compilation. However, their decisions to divide and expand is daunting. And its pacing is atrocious. Climbing ladders, crawling through tunnels, climbing robe, fight some random monsters, pull a switch, slide through minigames all to open a door to get the next main plot point EVERY SINGLE TIME FOR EACH CHAPTER is not my idea of fun. But it is for others. I'm just outdated in my gaming experience. And it shows when I try to enjoy Rebirth and likely part 3 as they expand more and more with their usual elements.

      Beautifully written, thoroughly enjoyed this.
      What you pointed out are valid thoughts, I had some trouble enjoying those mechanics myself and I play a lot of action adventure games. The attempt falls short due to the poor animations and I can see it becoming a drag, even if your playthrough is backed by the nostalgia of the original games.
      Thank you for sharing!

    I really liked the remake and rebirth series but I am not a big square fan. I do like the games though. I wouldn’t consider myself a final fantasy diehard. I did love kingdom hearts when the story was a bit easier to follow they lost me with 3 and I’m not sure I will get IV. I admit Nomura is a mixed bag but he’s not the only creative at Square so I don’t blame him entirely for the state of the company.

    For FFVII Remake I couldn't stand the cringe of some of the performances/dialogue (especially Barret - channeling Mr T waaaaaay too much) but I found when I changed the audio to Japanese and played the entire game w/ subtitles I enjoyed the experience much more. Much of the character animations and mannerisms evoke anime regardless so when I realized I was basically interacting w/ a Shonen anime (cringe and all) I started having a lot more fun

    There's only a few FF games that I truly loved, FF6 and FF7. The series dropped the ball, in my opinion after FF9. I did however enjoyed FF15 for its unique mechanics and campy style. FF16 I did not like, after about 10 hours I quit. FF7 Remake I thought was great, because it was such an ambitious game, and it mostly kept true to the original story. FF7 Rebirth however I thought could've been better, and I didn't like the Padding and Filler. I felt so frustrated grinding mobs over and over, doing pointless weird super-slow jobs to complete a main quest. I felt like changing Zack's story was a bit weird, and a few other things I don't want to mention because of spoilers.

    FFVII is one of my favorite games of all time; the story wasn't overly convoluted, it was paced well, the mechanics (materia etc) were simple but fun and I liked the characters. I played Crisis Core and watched Advent Children but didn't like either of them. I've played FF's 8,9,10,12,13,15 hoping one of them would be able to capture the magic I found in VII but none did and as the series number increased the stories got more nonsensical. I'm not sure whether it was because I was getting older and my tastes had changed or that they were just badly written, perhaps both. My nostalgia for the original meant I found parts of Remake enjoyable but was ultimately left disappointed. I'm currently playing Rebirth and my enjoyment of it directly relates to my nostalgia. I think it's unfair to say that it's just the Japanese way of storytelling, as it seems to me that incoherent convoluted rambling is just a SquareEnix way of story telling as there are plenty of JRPGs out there that can tell coherent stories rather well.

    • @GooCrewGaming
      @GooCrewGaming  8 месяцев назад

      I see your point about other JRPGs vs Squares storytelling, well put. I still believe parts of the storytelling that may be off putting to some people have to do with the fact that it’s a JRPG (over the top scenes with quirky aspects), but the convoluted storylines are not a defining factor of a typical JRPG, I agree with you on that.

      FF7 just hits differently, it was the first game to hit western markets at the right time and made an impression which is felt to this day. I just try to keep an open mind even though I am not really too much into JRPGs.

  • @itsdirtypantz3931
    @itsdirtypantz3931 8 месяцев назад +3

    The convoluted storylines and just 19.5 different versions of the "same" game have definitely kept me from even attempting to be interested in Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games. It would be great if there was a clearer picture as to how a new player should approach these series. As someone who hasn't played Kingdom Hearts I looked up "what order to play" them and Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX came up as the 1st. IDK, maybe it;s just me, but the "1.5" in that mouthful of a title makes me think there should be a game before that at least.

    Commenting this before watching the video: Square makes very good games with really cool characters and worlds but they tell their stories so incoherently. Like everyone knows the Kingdom Hearts storyline is damn near impossible to keep up with😂. I just played FF7 Remake, it was my first experience with the FF7 universe but there’s like key missing details in that game that would require you to have played another FF7 game to understand it. But that shouldn’t be the case for a REMAKE.

    I partly agree, but I think saying the story is convoluted is just too simplistic. We can compare The Last of Us 1 to Remake or FFX to say an example. The Last of Us story is very well told, but it's such a simple story and it doesn't have any difficult theme, idea or concept to the point of being a very predictable story. Telling that story in an organized and interesting way is way more easy. Now if you go to FFX or Remake, they have some absolute crazy ideas, a lot of different storylines, concepts and arcs to play around. Simply telling that type of story is 100 times more difficult.
    FF is always convoluted in some ways, but the ambition in their storytelling, their worldbuilding and their ideas are top in the industry.
    About the cringe and the difference in culture, I think people should be more open to all types of media. Every culture has top tier stuff, and thinking something is too dark, or too childish, or too witty, or too cringe or... puts a barrier in some of the best works. One can like anime and love reading Dostoievski or Joyce; loving Doctor Whoor Brotherhood or Chernobyl or True Detective or Succession; having Your name, the Big Lebowski, Seven Samurai and Persona as your favorite movies... the laziest type of critique you can have is just putting adjectives to any piece of media.

    • @GooCrewGaming
      @GooCrewGaming  7 месяцев назад

      I mean it’s all a matter of personal opinion when it comes to a lot of the stuff you hit on! Saying the last of us is predictable, for example, doesn’t resonate with me because I did not think it was predictable at all, I would say it was just easy to follow.
      Thanks for sharing your points!

    • @charlieh7529
      @charlieh7529 7 месяцев назад

      @@GooCrewGaming But that is my point. The Last of Us is really easy to follow is a very simple story (and that is nit a bad thing). The concepts and ideas behind them are really easy to grasp and there are very few elements for a writer to make it convoluted.
      FF are way more difficult stories to make them straightforward. Saying they are simply convoluted (which almost all of them are) loses the point that the ideas, worldbuilding and concepts they use are incredibly creative. And that is also huge credit to them.
      For me, if you tell a really simple story and mess it up, that is unforgivable. But if your ideas and world are extremely creative and complex, the logical thing is your story will be somewhat convoluted. Both have their merits and I think just saying, oh thst's convoluted or oh that's too straighforward loses the point.

    I'm 64 years old and have been playing video games for 50 plus years... I have literally played and beaten every game I have played, which is in the hundreds. I am no stranger to tough games I have Platinum all the Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Demon's Soul's, Elden Ring, God of War, Lies of P, FF Remake and many others to just name a few. Rebirth is honestly sadly garbage whose main focus was to make this game geared towards players with cat reflexes and response time... It totally discriminates against players with color blindness, people like myself who have aged, people with disabilities or any arthritis in their hands... Rebirth is insanely difficult and demands a player to constantly play in perfection with many of their mini games, and hard mode is absolutely over the top ridiculous! When I purchase a game, I want to experience the whole game to get my money's worth... It is impossible for me and 80% of players to do in this game because we can not obtain the needed items to even go for a Platinum. I have beat the game, but at least 35% of the game I will not be able to experience because Square Enix has made it impossible for me to do so. Our world is stressful enough without gaming companies like Square Enix, making it even more so by their developers. Remake was challenging and fun... Rebirth is absolutely broken for the difficulty bar they have given this game. I absolutely hate it, and that is a shame because I love FF7 OG it is one of my all-time favorite games... I can still put in 42 to 44 hours into that game, enjoy everything it offers... Rebirth I have over 502 hours and still can't come close to doing everything because of how insanely difficult they have made this game. If a company don't want the majority of players to Platinum their games, then they need to let us know in advance so we will not be wasting our hard earned money on them. I will not be purchasing FF7 3rd edition because Rebirth is totally unfair to the majority of the population of players who want a challenging game but fun... Square Enix has clearly lost sight of what is fun and challenging to the majority of the player base out here.

    I'm a boomer who's somehow never played the old FF games. Both Remake and Rebirth were incredibly mid for me, with the part you mentioned about cutscenes feeling 'cringe' for some people especially hitting the nail on the head (personally I think of it as 'Japanesey' filler dialogue that somehow invokes a... 'comfy' or 'homey' vibe for Japanese players...?) It's prevalent in a lot of anime too, and is borderline impossible to localize into English and still sound natural - in fact the attempt to do so was, once again IMHO, what made the dialogue in the game Forspoken feel so annoying.

    Well, SE is the final fantasy company, hopefully we can all admit that. Now I'm not saying modern SE games are bad, but theyre not as great as the sakaguchi games...the sales prove that SE stans sorry.
    Final fantasy has lost its original identity once sakaguchi left. Final fantasy was not "anime" or necessarily "japanese." It had more in common with metal gear, silent hill, dark souls, or resident evil. Sakaguchi was a japanese visionary that idolized western D&d, like hidetaka miyazaki idolized western fantasy or kojima idolized western cinema. These games are takes on western fantasy through adult japanese eyes, thats the secret sauce.
    Sakaguchi actually advised tetsuya nomura to make kingdom hearts complex or nobody will like it. I think nomura took it too far and needs sakaguchis hand on his shoulder these days. Sakaguchi hated padding, enough was cut from ff7 to probably make another game. I dont think he enjoys the modern final fantasies much, although he plays 14.
