My husband is a VFX guy, so he understands this stuff better than I do. I’m just a fan who really enjoys a good story, and this one hits all the buttons! Thank you for sharing so much of the behind the scenes story too. It’s kinda cool to see everyone putting it all together!
This was soo soo incredible! I am soo impressed and would love to learn even a fraction of what you did!! This 2 year project is just soo well built and beautiful I hope that I get to see soo much more! If you ever need technical support in the IT sector, I would be honoured to donate any expertise I have. Once again, I was blown away with the depth, planning, storyboarding and mocap that you did.
this is epic... i enjoyed the BTS as much as i did FIRMWARE....literally just watched it on DUST then navigated to your channel to get some more scope of in the making of FIRMWARE. I love how invested you are in every stage of the creation.
Great BTS! Loved the editing and how thorough it was. I definitely loved when you were using VR to check out your models, and using the vcam in your backyard. Having these tools so so empowering, and you did some amazing work with them!
Hey thanks man! I actually watched a bunch of your BTS videos from past years as inspiration on how to convey some of the info. I remembered you always did great breakdowns on all your projects and I wanted to do something similar. Thanks again!
I couldn't imagine how much work went into this short! I'm feeling an utterless, inexplicable connection. I killed a perfectionist in me long ago, and for a good reason: in science, nothing can ever be completed, of course, even less to perfection. When you're feeling you may come up with something radically new, it's black and white: you either succeed or it just doesn't happen. When you productize applied science, the result is code, and any code will be obsolete in a few years. But sometimes I let myself at large, and go above and beyond, just because. Or write my heart out in music: there I can perfectionise as much as I want, if only keeping in mind « Le Chef-d’œuvre inconnu » by Balzac as a cautionary tale. :-) And I just heard a story of going for the best of the best. Oh, man, I envy you! That's a true work of love! I'm wondering, why you've decided against the vocoder for the robots' voices? The first ones, in the 70's, were fully analog-they came out of '60s telephony research! The modern digital ones may have as many carrier bands and formant filters as you want. The spectral resynthesis software can do it, of course, and more. It's mostly used for remastering when stems are unavailable, but it's kinda finicky for special effects like this, while manipulating voice with a vocoder seems very natural.
Dang I should have talked to you about the robot vocoder sound fx :) The only reason we dialed the voice effects back was because when we did test screenings of the film, the main critique everyone gave was that they couldn't hear the dialogue well enough. It was far more important to me to have intelligable dialogue than a cool effect. Even though I looooved the Speak and Spell effect.
Just watched this again. Thanks so much for putting this together Calvin. Good to see more of the people involved. Everyone's energy and enthusiasm is very contagious!
Thanks for all your amazing work on cleaning up the character animations Fred! You're right, it's really fun to see the passion of everyone involved. It was a thrill from start to finish
Keep that original work coming. This is fantastic stuff. This was one of the standout stories I've seen on Dust recently. One thing to keep in mind... "droid" is a trademark of Lucasfilm (Disney), so next time you might want to come up with your own variant so there's no possibility of copyright infringement. ;) A couple of quick suggestions for "droid" names: Steelhead, MechOp, Formic, Gunny. Oh, and you need to get work as a director on some Star Wars series or something.
Really interesting to see how the movie was made! This was both the best short and the best grunge sci-fi I have seen in a long time! This is by no means meant as a criticism of the movie,, just an observation, that might come in handy in future projects. I didn't notice it in the movie, so in that sense, the scene worked, but when I watched it more closely here, I must say that when she approaches with the bat, her left arm below the elbow does look wrong, the arm seems bent unnaturally, that just seems off.
Fair point! We definitely had to pick our battles with letting certain things go, and investing the time in the details I thought were most critical. Glad you enjoyed the short and the making of!
Hi Calvin, That was an excellent presentation, absolutely fantastic. Now, let me ask some questions. I am an individual 3D animator, not at a very high quality level. Can I create a decent animated show using assets like those from Kitbash3D, utilizing Unreal Engine and Maya? Are hiring actors and incorporating motion effects necessary? For example, can I create 3D animated scenes similar to those used repeatedly in RUclips shows like Boonie Bears, Make Joke of, and Motu Patlu? Can all of this be achieved solely with 3D software like Maya and Unreal Engine? These shows do hard work for one time and they makes episode again and again by using same 3d environment so what do you think about this? please reply. Lots of love from India!
great work mate. Love from India. I am an Independent Award-winning filmmaker but now my interest also turns towards making animation films should I start with Blender and some Suggestions will be much welcomed
@@calvinromeyn hmmm that is very interesting. I love the production on this. Just curious about it since I work more in the live video sector. I was thinking usiing something like Jetset with the live actors and virtual production and then for the robot and such using something like Wonderstudio. Just trying to come up with a viable process myself. Thanks for the insights. Where did you find your actors? I'm currently looking for some actcors myself.
@@themightyflog I found my talent through casting calls on Facebook or the casting club website. Working in a fully virtual environment was more feasible than trying to blend real humans with a virtual environment. I also used this project as a testing ground for me to learn Unreal Engine.

I would have kept it live action with Unreal virtual recording.
@@themightyflog no because doing live action would have ballooned the budget and made the execution far more complicated and less flexible.
