  • Hidden worm castings & huge capacity fooled me into thinking something was wrong! But this Urban Worm Bag is a beast when it comes to turning food scraps & paper/cardboard waste into natural organic fertilizer for your garden! Check out this update to the banana flower feeding and see why I love my UWB even though I was missing something big!!
    We'll also start a coffee grounds experiment, do a no carbon/bedding feeding, and show you how I run my Urban Worm Bag to get the most worm castings out of this incredible system!!
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

      Yes it did!! Luckily our Lanai has three separate sliding glass door exits/entrances (I think two were originally supposed to be windows) so the UWB is offset to one side of a slider we don't use. She has so grown so tolerant of the worms and me!! I was just telling her as we were doing our twice a day time lapse check in on the VermiHut that I think she loves the worms as much as our dachshund 🤣😂🤣 Thanks so much for watching Peggy!!🪱🪱🪱

    Question! How bad were the castings from your 1st harvest? Did not look bad on the video.
    My CFT bin is in slow motion because of the cold conditions in my basement, not enough bulk to keep it warm, only a couple inches of bedding. Worms seem healthy enough, just not doing much.
    My 50 gallon grow bags on the other hand are really cranking. Once a week I completely turn the bedding, one is almost ready to harvest.
    One thing I do a bit different is not add carbon when I feed, unless it gets too wet, not a problem in the grow bags. As the bulk of the grow bag bin begins to decline I add some more shredded leaves I keep wet in a 25 gallon grow bag. Keeping the leaves wet helps break them down so the worms can use them quicker.
    I used to over winter my worms in my grow room, keeping them in the cold basement definitely has a new learning curve.
    I wonder where someone can buy a banana flower? That was so cool!
    Enjoy your videos, keep em coming!
    Stay Well!!!!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 месяцев назад

      They actually weren't that bad! I thnk I just had it in my head that the first round had to be put back in. The last castings were probably the least processed and now I know it's because the good castings were sticking to the sides and letting everything funnel down the center too fast. I think I just need to punch the sides in more to loosen it up periodically and not just when I'm about to harvest. Your pre-soaked leaves I'm sure are great bedding!! I've never seen a banana flower in stores but I bet some tropical countries or some Asian countries might sell them??!? Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching Brian!!🪱🪱🪱

  • @MonzGary
    @MonzGary 6 месяцев назад +1

    I like the experiment, you are normally very good about making sure you add enough bedding to counter massive feeds. I'm definitely following to see if you can get better castings with smaller feeds and less bedding, without the bag getting too wet or with too many worms in the harvest. Also interesting that castings were collecting on the side. Would be interesting if you can influence the castings to collect more in the middle vs the sides by where you feed the bag. Good stuff!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you!! That is a good point, maybe feeding in different areas of the bin will influence where the castings collect. I probably also need to punch the sides a little harder after I harvest to get the wetter castings from sticking to the sides. It could also be a winter things since the sides are usually drier in the summer with all the heat we get...so many possibilities, so much to learn!! Thanks so much for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

    What is the difference between red wiggler worms that people buy and free backyard worms? Do the red wigglers make better castings?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 месяцев назад

      Great question!! Earthworms that are used for worm composting (epigeic earth worms) are different from the garden earth worms (endogeic) that are in the top 6 inches or so of soil and burrow horizontally. The third type of earth worm, Enecic earthworms are really muscular and burrow deep in the soil. If you dump a bunch of red wiggler compost worms in your garden beds they will eventually die or flee to an area with a lot of dead organic matter. They like to stay in the top inch or two and don't make burrows. A typical garden bed does not have enough dead decaying matter for them to eat...they are however easily found in a compost pile or horse manure pile. Typical endogeic garden worms don't like to be confined or bunched up together so they don't make for very good composting worms. If you find a leaf pile with earth worms or you have a regular compost pile with earthworms in it, those are the ones you want for your bins...you will typically see a bunch together in a small space. Here is a video on how to acquire free or almost free worms: ruclips.net/video/w1GMc5-RRbk/видео.html I hope this helps!! Thanks for asking a great question and of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hello Patrick. I'm really curious about the Hungry Bin - Worm Farm Compost Bin - Continuous Flow Through Vermi Composter for Worm (Amazon $339). Looks like the Cadillac of worm bins. Seems like there is little effort on the vermicomposter (person) and very little interaction with the worms. Looks simple and productive. I've love to hear your opinion of it.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  3 месяца назад

      Soooooo, I've never used or even seen a Hungry Bin so you get what you paid for with regard to my thoughts on it 😂🤣😂 I checked it out on Amazon and the video tutorials there. It looks like it behaves very similar to the Urban Worm Bag. Just like the UWB it will take a while to fill it up and get the worms populated enough to start producing casting regularly in a good quantity like you see in the videos. The Urban Worm Bag went through some modifications and variations/versions with zippers and the mechanism on the bottom...I'm hoping the mechanism that holds up the tray on the Hungry Bin has been through some good use and modifications to make sure it holds up well. It seems like a very sturdy bin with great volume and ease of use...nothing comes out as clean as you expect, so there may be some getting used to not dropping that tray as you unbuckle it. It seems like a fun worm bin for someone who has already raised worms for a few harvests in a small starter bin and is looking for a big upgrade. I say this because the price is pretty high in my opinion!! I'd want to make sure I knew how to drive before I bought a cadillac as my first car 😂🤣😂 So if it was $200 less and my wife let me have another worm bin, I'd probably order one right now!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Hello again! THANKS so much for checking it out for me, I really appreciate your opinion!!! Yes, I totally agree with the thought that if it was $200 less I would get it instantly as well! Also that the bottom tray may be a bit of a challenge to remove - maybe have something (a block of wood or upside-down bucket) under it to support it while unlatching it? And yes hopefully the latches will hold up. I've had a vermihut for about a year. My first worm encounter, it's been very interesting to learn about worming first hand and up close. Yes it does seem a lot like the UWB. I agree too with your thoughts on the expectation level, lol. I will keep checking into it and pondering it. Thanks again for your thoughts.

      I occasionally find insects or other arthropods in my Outdoor Worm Bin and I just pluck them out. Centipedes are predators to worms so do your best to chase them down and eliminate them without getting stung/bit. A gloved hand and a tight squish will typically end their day or just use a garden tool, but definitely get rid of them. You won't have an infestation since they don't like each other either, so you'll only ever have one or two at a time. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi Patrick and Autumn, thanks so much for the shout out! Oh wow, I wonder if you are going to see some heat with that coffee mound! I can tell that you are going through carbon withdrawal at the end when you resisted the urge to add more shredded cardboard!

      My Pleasure!! You are such a great source of collected information!! So far the coffee grounds haven't spiked the temperature sensor after 2 1/2 days, but it has been cold so maybe they were just passing off their heat to the rest of the bin to keep it warm! It physically pained me not to add shredded bedding to this feeding😂🤣😂Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi. I'm a vermicomposting newbie and have had my Urban Worm Bag for only a month. I saw you put in some orange and lemon peels...but I thought it was recommended not to use citrus fruit to feed worms.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  3 месяца назад +1

      Thankfully worms will eat just about anything that was once alive (otherwise we'd have a lot of citrus peels everywhere!) It is best to feed citrus in moderation at first because the worms let the microbes and other bin critters help them get it started first. After your bin is a few months old, you can start to introduce it. The most common issue new vermicomposters have is over feeding, so I think folks are trying to helps out by saying not to feed citrus or onions or other acidic or sulphurous food scraps which can linger and really smell up a new worm bin. Rest assured you can feed them all of this forbidden food if you start in very small quantities and see how fast they eat them. Here is a video where I explain W-urbin legends or forbidden food lore: ruclips.net/video/gewt_og8EfQ/видео.html I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    What’s the difference between castings and vermicompost??

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  6 месяцев назад +1

      Great question...as I was editing I realized I didn't do a good job of describing the two. Think of worm castings as pure worm poop after the worms have eaten everything in the bin and left nothing behind but their poop...an impossible task to achieve but this is theoretically 100% worm castings...just worm poop. Vermicoimpost is everything less than 100% worm castings...so worm castings mixed with uneaten food and bedding. So the dividing line is a fine line. Most folks that sift their vermicompost will call that pure worm castings, even though there is surely some teeny tiny particles of bedding and food. But you will find most people also use worm castings and vermicompost interchangeably. For me the dividing line is whether or not I can see the debris in the material...but ultimately it is all vermicompost!! I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for helping me clarify and of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      I was thinking what would happen if you started a new tray filled with food and bedding all the way to the top and bought some worms in and put it to one side and put a thin layer of compost on top to start it off. I asked AV to do it but he did it in a bucket instead lol.

    I thought vermicompost was the same as worm castings? 🤔

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes...and no!! Vermicompost is worm castings with some debris from uneaten bedding and food scraps...worm castings is 100% worm poop without the debris, but it is actually theoretical because there is no way something is 100% pure worm castings with nothing else in it. So most people use the terms interchangeably or call worm casting the vermicompost they have sifted to get out most of the debris. I mostly use the terms interchangeably! So no matter what anybody says we're all right!!😂 Thanks so much for watching and for your long time support!!🪱🪱🪱
