Art model moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore in 1996 bro. Not 1999. Art model announced this in 1995. The Cleveland Browns came back as an expansion team in 1999
You catch the part where he said Cleveland Browns Stadium cost "of just under a billion dollars". Total bullcrap. Part of the reason they are talking about replacing it is because it wasn't built as a high end stadium... even by late 90s standards.
Grew up in Cleveland and remember old Muni Stadium as a kid. The place was huge, seated 77,000 and the players had to enter the field of play through the baseball dugouts. Haven't been back since 1972, so don't know what the new place is like.
For all intents and purposes, Cleveland is the birthplace of modern football, and as such, the purity of the game is important to a huge majority of Browns fans. The game should be played outside in the elements, on natural grass. The stadium serves one purpose and is therefore should remain named after the team it serves. The helmets have no fancy logo and the team is named after the most important coach in the history of the game. There are no cheerleaders (save a dog as a mascot), nothing to distract you from what you really came to see. These things must be kept in mind when designing stadium renovations for the Browns. It’s a part of the history of this city and this team. It’s the reason why hundreds fans come to games wearing the same “RUN THE DAMN BALL, KEVIN!” tshirts. This stadium is due for some renovation, but for the sake of the team, the fans, the history, and the city, I hope it is focused on the lakefront district surrounding the stadium and the concourses, and respects the sanctity inside the bowl and on the playing field.

As a lifelong Cleveland gal - one thing the stadium needs somewhere close - handicapped parking. They had none last time i was there and i had to park in bfe. Having stage 3 copd walking is not my friend - add cold air - forget it!
It’s a good stadium honestly, helps that the team isn’t complete ass anymore. Extremely cold tho, especially with it being right on the shore of Lake Erie
its a great stadium, as a giants fan who got to visit Browns stadium twice once in preseason once in the reg season i gotta say i was blown away by the pyro and the fans, its a bit barebones on todays standards but i really like the site its at now.. the only thing is a roof like you said its cold asf in the winter w that lake chill, many people dont go because of that. but its a great stadium game experience, its within steps of the actual downtown with alot of bars, compared to the meadowlands its awesome in many many ways
I went to old Cleveland municipal stadium in the mid 70s when Brian sipe was QB several times. I thought it was cool knowing Babe Ruth and Jim brown played on that field.
I dont know what people want. Its in great shape. Theres not a bad seat in the house. And honestly I dont like the idea of leaving the place with such a bad run there. Sometimes old is better. That stadium made me so happy when it was built. I had a team again.
I love the fact that newer stadium is built on the same ground as old Municipal Stadium. Taking the same walk to the place that my dad and I used to walk to decades ago is special. Win a superbowl and I’m sure that they’ll be looking to build a new place w/a retractable roof in Richfield or somewhere comparable.
As a Browns fan myself, it's okay. It's definitely outdated in many aspects, but that'll happen after 25 years. I'll be looking forward to the new stadium whenever it comes, but we need the space in concourses from the 100s to 500s as well as more food locations for fans.
I’m not sure if you mentioned, the current stadium was built on a budget- initially it was supposed to be roofed. They built it in a rush and now it’s falling apart. The regular maintenance can’t make up for the terrible winters and exposed structures that were supposed to be indoors initially
Sitting in the old stadium and the new stadium both built on the lake shore is very cold. The intent to keep it open like the old stadiums, while noble and pure, tend to make it less likely that the stadium will ever get any super bowl selection or even college bowl games. As one of the newer open stadiums it is a proper job of design. I think that a cover would not only get multiple venues in the cold weather it would help collect added funds for upkeep. I have seen no studies on covering this one or building a new one. They do fill the seats and that is because the Browns fans are VERY loyal and I might say rabid. Regardless of what they do Browns fans will be there for the team.
what would make the most sense is if they just hung on to the current stadium with no massive renovations for the next 20 years and then rebuild it in like 2045. its just not old enough to warrant spending so much money on. either that or get the roof and then get a new stadium like in 2070
The current stadium is great, you are correct it's underrated. It fits the city and franchise well. All you need near by is tailgating and some bars which they have.
Art Modell left for Baltimore in 1996, not 1999. Announced it in 1995. How do you get that wrong? Also, you say there’s nothing unique, but as far as I know there’s no other outdoor NFL stadium that faces east-west. Definitely adds to intrigue if it’s a sunny afternoon late in the year (which doesn’t happen that often).
A lot of the late 90s and early 00s stadiums are pretty lack luster by today's standards. Most of them can be improved by adding endzone suite bunkers, drink rails, modern video boards/sound systems, and upper deck canopies. Many of their façades have aged poorly, too.
Oh, please. I remember when stadiums were just stadiums, not huge social clubs. When they opened the Metrodome, the builder said, "The idea is to let the fans in, let 'em see a ballgame, then let 'em go home. That's all we want." Modern stadiums have too many unnecessary add-ons. They don't need all those bells and whistles.
@@davidlafleche1142 With every game being available in 4k, the game alone isn't a draw like it was. And most people over 60 who toughed it out in the old stadiums prefer to watch games from home now, too. Especially when the weather isn't favorable. It is a social club, both in-person and online. I never said that was my personal preference or expectation. That's what most attendees demand in a modern stadium. They wouldn't have the "bells and whistles" if they didn't make money.
That picture with no fans was minus 20 below. Wind chill.. and it was on Christmas Eve. You had to be a pure die. Hard to go to that game because it was painfully cold
Its my favorite football stadium. Great views, perfect location for stuff after the game, very comfortable seating, and it has that electric feel you get with some outdoor football stadiums. Its hands down better than something like the horseshoe or Cincinnati stadium. Easily the best in ohio but since its associated with the browns people just hate
Thanks for the video! The original cost was in the $200 million range. Around $400 million today. The current stadium by itself is functional and can “get by”, but the location and ease of access is very poor in my opinion considering all factors desired in venues like this. In a perfect world, a new stadium would be constructed on a new site. I live in Cuyahoga County and say “think big” with more of a regional approach. I don’t think it’s fair for only the city of Cleveland to foot the bill to fund a portion of it. That will severely limit what can be done. There needs to be a multi-county, NE Ohio regional tax created for a big, proper design to be completed. Get creative and figure it out! I trust this is going on behind the scenes now
I miss Municipal Stadium -- I had season tickets all the way up to the end. BTW the stadium in Canton is for high school games and seats less than 25,000. Please research better before posting.
The main gripe is the city of Cleveland led by mayor Michael R. White didn't let a new owner co-design it with the city. It was a very cold and sterile stadium. Plus they built it minus a retractable roof or dome on the lakefront. Cleveland is one of the poorest cities in the USA, the east side of Cleveland is horrid. The city and county can't afford it, they need to get the other counties that surround Cuyahoga County to pay up with a voucher for EVERYONE in said counties to get a ticket to one home game a year. Haslam is better off doing what Miami did and build a roof into the stadium.
The score boards are shaped like the state of Tennessee were haslem is from. Over I like the stadium the only thing I don't like is how you get in and out of the stadium.
In regards to overall stadiums...its fine. However when compared to the places that have been built since 2005 its a dump. That stadium was rushed and built for 260 million dollars. Think about that. 260 million dollars and it didnt have hot water. Lerner had to "splurge" for hot water. The city screwed up. The Browns should have come back with the Texans in 2001 and they should have built a place like Lucas OIl Stadium. That way the city could get big events.
Still plenty good for the few games played there a year! Wait and see how Jacksonville's roof turns out. No need to rush into this. What Cleveland really needs is to dump money into that outdated Hopkins airport!
