Very good video on alternative products for care, however, you failed to do anything about the soles and the sole edged of the boot. They are the most vulnerable part of the boot and tend to fall apart quicker than the uppers. They are also of leather and deserve proper treatment to make the upper function longer. Is there any reason you do not put product on them? I would be curious to know your point of view, considering the advice others give to this subject. I enjoy my Beckmans and Iron Rangers, as well as about five other pair of Red Wings. Thank you for the helpful advice you give toward boots. I have Wolverines as well, and am glad to rotate between them and the Red Wings. DJ
I did forget to condition the leather on the Roccia outsole. I should have put some mink oil on there. You have a nice collection of boots. How do you like the Wolverines vs the Beckmans?
@@CJCook Most people assume that both manufacturers are in the same (or similar) category, but designed styles and construction are different for Red Wing and Wolverine. Newer Wolverine boots utilize too many leather parts stitched together and detract from a clean design, while providing too many opportunities for cut stitches in hard wear. Wolverine's eagerness to capitalize on the popularity of the current 1000 Mile styles (and their increased profits) made them introduce an inferior version at a lower cost - greed on their part and shameless lowering the high standard expected of a venerable company. (By the same point, China is producing "knock-off" Iron Rangers for sale on the internet.) I'd caution anyone to either save money over a long period of time for the "real deal," or take a chance to purchase used pairs through one of the online auction platforms. Fit becomes an issue for both manufacturers, so trying on sizes at a local sales location might prevent later disappointments. The short answer to your question is that most of my Wolverines have a very thin sole and this wears through quickly -- which is why it is important to condition the soles, and eventually have a half sole (martyr sole) attached to add extra life in the wearing. Two influences brought me to favor Red Wings: (1) the PBS program This Old House, whose Kevin O'Conner's foot (wearing a pair of Iron Rangers) has a close up as he gets out of his truck, and, (2) seeing a pair of 8-inch cap toe boots (taller Iron Ranger style) in a store window in Singapore on a visit there. I've been fortunate to have added several pair since. Red Wing construction is second to none, although everyone slips up on occasion -- they have provided fewer disappointments through the years. Enjoy wearing boots, and continue with those reviews! DJ
@@quickfoxxes I really like the silhouette of the Wolverine 1000 Mile boot. It is impressive. I think it would me a good Summer boot but I agree with you the leather sole limits the 1000 Mile boot for year-round wear especially if you live in a city with proper seasons.

Hey CJ, I recently bought a pair of Beckmans and noticed the leather arch on the outsole started cracking around the stitching. Did you have this same problem? If so did it worsen or is it mainly a cosmetic issue during break in process?
Hey CJ! I have the 9014s in black Featherstone. I can't seem to find the black ANLC. I have the black Boot Cream. Is that the same stuff with just a different name? I also have the neatsfoot neutral Leather Cream, but I like the results you got with the black ANLC
@@CJCook Thanks for the quick response! I was reading that the Boot Cream is more of a finisher/polish than a conditioner (such as the Leather Cream), is that your experience? Red Wing has so many different care products with similar names, hard to keep them all straight 😂
Questions for you Mr. Red Wing ; ). I have Iron Rangers in a size 9E. Wear Orthotics thus the need for the E. I want to find the Beckman 9014 but as you know they didn't come in a wider width. If I find them (probably used which is ok) you think a size 9 regular would suffice i.e., did they run wider possibly to begin with...? Also, I know you mentioned the Beckman may return (wooo...!). If so do you know when, any details etc.?
hello CJ, in the end after the iron rangers I also found the Baeckman 9014 ..... yes ..... I wanted to ask you as soon as they arrive should I condition them before using them? I have both the cream and the Mink oil ... what do you say?
CJ, I recently purchased my first pair of RW’s. I also own a pair of Wolverine 1000 miles in brown. I like them so much I decided I need a black pair of boots as well. I went with the Beckman’s (9014- black) based in large part on your recommendation to get a pair while they’re still available. You’re cleaning tip to use black leather conditioner (instead of neutral, because it leaves white reduce in crease lines) sounds like good advice. However, I can’t find black leather conditioner for sale on Red Wings website or Amazon. Do you happen to know if RW has discontinued this product? If they have, do you have a recommendation for an alternative leather conditioning product? Thanks for any advice and I enjoy your videos and find them very helpful.
CJ aka TS: Where do these Beckmans rate in your long list of RW boots.? Style- quality- wear etc There is a sound of Beckman soles hitting a hard surface like no other Thanks
Hi CJ! I have recently purchased the red wing beckmans because of your videos. However, I am seeing some really deep creases that appear to be pretty nasty around the ankle. Besides oiling it with the red wing neutral cream, what do you think I should do?
I have not heard of conditioning the leather insole of a boot. I have seen and would condition the leather outsole on the bottom of the Beckmans and the Sheldons because that area is exposed to the elements.
Yes, I have worn the Beckman with wool and cotton trousers. I have worn the 9014s with a suit. The Willistons would look better with a suit but with a proper fitted suit the Beckmans look smart.
@@CJCook Thank you, CJ! I also just checked your comparison of Willistons and beckman. I was looking for boots that I can use for work boots and business boots when I travel. I think beckman would be my perfect choice!
Hi CJ. I'm surprised you have different sizes for the Beckmans and Iron Rangers. I have Beckmans, Iron Rangers and the new limited edition 8818 black moc-toe 6" boots. The Beckmans and Iron Rangers have the exact same last (#8), so they fit identically. I had to go up 1/2 size for the moc toe boots because the last (#23) is shorter and slightly wider than the Beckman/IR last. I can confirm this not only on fit but my Red Wing insole fits identically in both.
@@CJCook That makes sense. I'm a MN native from Minneapolis, 1 hour from Red Wing, MN. I'm late to the game as a Red Wing aficionado, but lucky to have their factory so close. I finally caved after going to their annual warehouse sale last month and I already have three pairs. Break in isn't nearly as big of a deal as I was led to believe, and like you, I've found the Red Wing store(s) to provide great service and helpful advice, yet another reason to buy locally. I enjoy your videos.
Is this a commercial for red wing? First, there are so many better conditioners that do not carry the red wing logo. Second, there is a huge room for improvement in your boot caring techniques. Lastly, your boots can benefit from a good set of trees. Good luck to you with your collection.

How do you get that white stitching around the boot to stay good and white because that really makes that boot pop
