Honestly, usually when i hear about enhancements in tech, in most fields, i just couldn't be bothered to look into what it entails, but these unreal releases always have me immediatly jumping to see whats new, and i don't even use it, its just so insane to me, this field is changing so heavily so quickly, and whats possible now is so different from even five years ago. crazy stuff.
Fortnite and epic games providing a multibillion dollar subsidy to unreal 5 years ago has paid off multi fold. Even though at the time the initial 500 mil seemed absurd, flash forward and UE5 is the engine for high fidelity games, hard stop.
unreal engine seems pretty cool. i just hope all these updates somehow streamline the development process so that we could stop having this recession in games being made. Atlus/Sega has been going great with the engine, I hope other devs manage to make use of it for easier developments.
I doubt that unfortunately. If they aren't trying to make a live service game, they are trying to make this gigantic open world games that feels like an actual mini world with day and night cycles and etc instead of making something that's a few hours and keeps the player engaged with a great story. Good gameplay and things to earn. I unfortunately don't see anything changing
My friend and I have just begun developing video games for our business and we’re using the Unreal Engine. What we’re able to do with it is absolutely incredible, and we’re so hyped to dive into 5.4 and test out the new features!
If they dont have design documents. I genuinely believe they dont have internet at their headquarters and just walk usb drivers around. This old meets new abomination of inefficiency.
I hope all the rumors about Halo moving to Unreal are correct. It wont fix the business decisions they make but it will make game dev way easier for them.
Maybe in the long term it will, but expect halo 7 to be unfinished on launch just like every single game 343 has released. I'm sure it will be amazing years down the line, but I fear 343 will fumble once again
@@rewpertcone8243People seem to be under the impression that UE is the endgame of engines when in reality it won't ever make up for terrible management/work ethic. like half of Halo's devs were contract, the guys who worked on the engine left.
Just like everything else that encapsulate the process for high level workflow it needs some tinkering to make it fits. Like Luke said its speed up the process that doesn't mean dev can just use it as is and expected it to be good. It will make indies better by just filling in stuff like motion and lighting, no it won't suddenly fix bad AAA game or made it worse the problem is not in the technology.
The volume tech can be really bad though, Mandalorian S1 had one of the best current cinematographers working on it. Lots of movies and shows have used it since and it looked like crap

UE6 is gonna be wild. I mean, this is only 5.4 and this is wild. Can't wait to see what CDPR does with this engine. I feel bad for Bethesda fanatics. I'm sure they think ES6 will be a return to form, but I'll be shocked if it doesn't play like a remastered Skyrim. Most people probably would have been happy with that in 2017, but I don't think it'll fly in 2027.
The way Davinci Resolve is taking over post production in film making, it seems Unreal is doing the same. All these companies want to be the one stop shop, Unreal seems like they've taken the lead. (Outside of modeling and texturing.)
This is a thing you will see if you spend enough time in the engine. You will start to notice things in other games that gives it away. I have several thousand hours in Ark Survival Evolved/Ascended and you see everything UE can do and can't do and see all of its quirks. Then there are folks like Square Enix that came out with FF7 Remake in Unreal engine and you can't tell that it uses UE. Basically its going to come down to the devs to make it look distinct. Someone with a lot of money can do that. Other teams may not be able to.
You know there's more than two animations, right? And from what I've heard there's nothing stopping developers from making more. Or are you just talking about the physics and motion
@thegreat7878 the latter. But it's a small gripe for sure on my part. All-in-all I think the tech is awesome and is an infinite boon to developers for sure.. Probly should have noted that in the initial comment
What i really want from the industry is innovation for gameplay and storytelling. We have been stuck in the same game mechanics for decades, and storytelling is suffering all along. Visual fidelity is great, but without substance, is just smoke and mirrors.
While clearly unreal does have a lovely feature set. But like anything this is a sales pitch, they always are. What it doesn’t ever show is the problems or lack of help I assume that comes with any saleable software due to lack of support or staff.
I miss cinema with real locations. no matter how much you flex about all these technologies, real locations will forever be the most immersive experience.
These videos mean nothing when almost every unreal engine game we’ve gotten has sucked ass, none of this shit translates to good gameplay, it only translates to the ease of use for developers to make a game, what that sounds like to me, is that we’re going to get quickly finished games that play like shit
Basically all those "ue 5.4 is a game changer!!" Videos have no idea what they are talking about. The only interesting thing in this release is the help on performance imo lol

You dony understand how expensive and time consuming it is to build an in house engine. Also most of the upcoming developers in the industry is familiar with and is taught in Unreal engine hence why more games are being built for it.
It does once developers start using it. Also making things easier for developers is incredibly important and can translate to better end user experiences.
For this gen at least, this is all a little out of reach. The closest we've got to experience the power of UE5 ourselves is the the Matrix demo, which was admittedly very impressive but suffered from framerate and image quality issues. The few games that supposedly run on UE5 are remarkebly unimpressive. And before anyone says a PC could do UE5 justice.... Yes a high end 4090 could perhaps do such a thing ( barring the awful stuttering that plagues UE PC games) but games, particularly AAA UE5 are and will be developed with the consoles as a priority. I lowkey like the love-hate relationship this community of this channel has with Bethesda.
What do you mean this channel? It's literally everywhere lol
A lot of the LED screens are actually removed and redone in cg
Is there a risk that being both the best looking and easiest to use software could lead to all games looking and feeling the same?
