I wonder if they can be modified to use by licenced amateurs on 70cm repeaters. As you stated, the price is similar to the Quansheng K5 which is a VHF/UHF handheld with readily modifiable firmware.
As I've mention over on Marxy's blog, it does seem to be the case-- the MCU is the same as in the Quanshengs (a Cortex M0 variant), and there's pads to do ISP. I haven't located the datasheet for the RF synth, however the specs/programming wouldn't be too different from ICs in its family..
Perhaps ideal for keeping in touch inside a large store or mall.
