This song hit me hard. All that violent and insane shit Jack did, you think that maybe he's a terrible person. Then this song plays and you realize; Jack is asking forgiveness for his soul.
This song is depressing in a way. It's sort of saying how Jack's lost his humanity at this point and he's nothing less than a ruthless killer. Hopefully we get to see some more of this in Anarchy Reigns.
word could tie jack cayman from madworld, sam gideon from vanquish and jetstream sam from revengeance together as one character if one were so inclined
Love how the final song to one of the bloodiest games ever is basically a man repenting for what he did, even if justified he knows that it could always lead him down a bloodier path than before, for less moral reasons.
[HOOK:] Lord help me save my soul. I'm trying not to lose control. I'm trying not to lose control. But I might have to let go… [X2] [VERSE 1:] Yeah, with open eyes, I define my direction. To cast my light in time, the shine's my protection. I shed blood just to rhyme in perfection. To move at God speed no time for reflection. It's evident in the movement that he steps with, A monster has arrived the kid's on some next shit. Benevolent with the flow. Beyond weapons To style. Beyond rippin’ the heart where rhymes kept in. So he can't fade out. It's too much ground at stake to let the beat play out. Its like time stops. What will he say now? How can you move when they try to put what he say down? See that’s the discipline. I push mute on these actors, And go hard so these little disputes ain't a factor. I gotta get my name up in the rafters. And make it so only real shit is coming right after. [HOOK] [VERSE 2:] I'm trying to find my position in time, And get it popping before I'm outta my mind. See, I be out on the grind for a week at a time. Like I'll be dead when I close my eyes. So I be sleeping one eye open, vision on my hopes and dreams. With a desire that’ll burn ‘til it’s smoking. I'm on fire. Ain't no need for provoking. My soul is providing the fuel that will keep me open. By any means they still trying to control him, And take away the light that he holds so they can close him. But never that there's no force to hold him down When he grabs that mic and then goes in. I'm so far above what y'all dealing with. I'm so close to the edge, I'm unlimited. I'm so diligent. To the end I'm killing it. And my last breath, I exhale, spilling this. [HOOK]
I'd say the story is intensely meaningful, too. I'd also think that it should be to most ppl (not implying you must change your view tho), since what I read into it is a pretty sobering commentary on how pervasive violence is in our popular culture, and by taking it to the extremes that it does in the game, it shows just how perverse and fucked up the notion behind it is. I'm not saying violence is bad in art or whatever, but that it would behoove us all to be aware of where our enjoyment of such things comes from, and to be vigilant to not let those urges get the better of us; in my eyes, Jack stands as the culmination of that sort of ultra-violent society, a man who can only deal with problems through violence, because it is all he's ever known. He doesn't help people, he kills them.
I swear I remember hearing this on a public radio here in Massachussets. I explicitly remember the chorus, and didn't know about this game's soundtrack before this year. Is there a song that sampled this? Did this sample another song for its chorus?
I mean I recall a long time ago at a little college radio thing they had a few osts playing and I don't think anybody caught on for a while cuz they mixed them all up with a general interest stuff that was popular during the daytime so when they would play that stuff people wouldn't notice and every so often would sneak something like very well known video games like final fantasy themes xD

Interesting how all the other songs are badass, edgy, and comically sinister as well as over-the-top yet "Soul" here comes off as rather melancholy. Jack does some extremely violent and morally questionable BS throughout this game who takes crap from nobody (and its spiritual successor Anarchy Reigns) but this song gives off the vibe this nonsense is eating away at him inside.
