Strong cast/good acting, and very stylistically shot by The directors, who'd usually do more modern inter city gang crime films, but they do a fantastic job with creating the sleazy and violent streets of Victorian London, that isn't actually that different to their previous films, as it's basically a Victorian Ghetto, with a mad man on the loose. Great work as always. You guys should take a deeper look into arguably one of the most hyped horror movies of all time, but fell flatter than a Hellraiser sequel. The movie I'm referring to was once released under the banner of "The Expendables of the Horror Genre", known as "Death House". Their entire production budget must have gone to casting horror icons like Tony Todd and Gunnar Hansen because nothing else about this movie makes sense when it comes to the plot, acting, screenplay, or the ending.

From Hell looks great. Esthetically it got everything right. Production and Costume design are excellent. Even the casting is just right. However there is something off about the movie so when I hear "studio interference" that pretty much explains what's wrong with it. I'd love to hear a tell all featurette or a full length documentary on what exactly the studio changed and what the Hughes Brothers original take was on the project. Overall I do enjoy the movie and maybe one day we'll get like a mini series adaptation of it or something.
When I worked at the Alamo Drafthouse, they were showing the premiere of Book of ELI, and the Hughes brothers were there. I went in to use the restroom, and they came in, used the urinals on either side of me and never once stopped talking. (No, I didn't say anything to them because of Men's room etiquette.) It was a tad surreal. Also, Greg Nicotero showed up late and I let him walk right in, because I was the only person on staff who knew who he was.

Your response to Ian Holmes' performance is the diametric opposite of mine. One thing that makes me sad these days is the almost total absence of positive male figures in movies. A spiritual, well educated, wise old head who is full of knowledge and kindness... that just doesn't happen in movies anymore. I thought Ian was doing very well at being one of the rare exceptions... until the movie decided to crap on my neck and show me that nope, no good men are allowed, they must all always be evil. The more benign they seem, the bigger the disappointment and that's clearly on purpose. Movies are trying to please a certain man in the audience who doesn't like to be told that he should look up to a good, intelligent man. the rest of the audience apparently doesn't matter.
I didn't realize it until just now but a sentence with Johnny Depp play the same character in this as he did in sleepy hollow kind of out of his element and drawn into a world he was not prepared to deal with
Just to be clear for anyone watching this, the letter from which the title "From Hell" is absolutely not considered to be an authentic letter by any Ripper historians. All Ripper letters were almost undoubtedly written by other reporters trying to make a stir or just other random people.
A movie review by a nobody who grew up as a troll - starting at the age of eight - and thinks that video games are WAY better than any movie ever made. Uh ya. Worthless.
LOL all I can think about when I see this movie is how 20 years ago I was watching this with a girl I liked from hs and I was basically holding in a fart for the entire movie
This movie is definitely style over content….the mood is great, it looks great, but overall, it’s deeply flawed, too long, dull, and honestly a “downer-ruin your day” movie. Despite its cheese, I never walk away from this movie feeling anything but mildly depressed and kind of grossed out. Look into @the diary of Jack the Ripper. I wrote a nice comment about THAT book and it’s cancelled 1995 Anthony Hopkins film, but RUclips mysteriously erased my comment whilst I was typing it, which seems to happen all the time on here. Too often for it to be a glitch, in my opinion. 🧐🤨
HOLLYWOOD + STUDIO INTERFERENCE = Bullsh*t!! The Hughes Bros may have been fans and they can't solely be blamed but they are responsible in many ways for the crap they produced. Yes, they should definitely remake this and I like the whole series idea but for goodness sake go with someone more independent with a lot more creative control. Hard I know as you need a budget but I am not at all surprised by Moore's dismissal of this. When you throw in ALOEG afterwards, which was truly an abomination, I have great sympathy for Moore. Being from the UK, it was a shock to see the British talent involved and how they were utterly wasted in this movie. I was entertained by the movie, I cannot lie, but when I think what could've been.... geez
I had hoped it had died. I'm all for it when an artist makes a film that either does the book justice or even changes almost everything into its whole own thing but creates something brilliant (Blade Runner, The Shining.. there are a lot of films very different from the books which still stand), but From Hell was just about the most offensive things I have ever seen in this regard! Even ignoring the book it kind of sucked aside from having some interesting ideas.. but man, anyone who hasn't read the book needs to because that thing is the greatest example of "comics" as high literature! What made it so great wasn't Stephen Knight's basic idea about William Gull, but how the story is showing Gull's process and vision, his breakdown of religious inspiration for the killing, and being inside his head as he carries out these atrocious acts under what he considers to be something like divine command. You marry that with the commentary on the metaphysics of events echoing through time and the rebirth of evils carried across decades and centuries, and tell it with the wonderfully atmospheric artwork of Eddie Campbell, and you have something uttely mindblowing in its depth and scope. and then you take that and what? some pretty actors with bad accents and just the basic thing about the Ripper being a deranged royal physician who happens to be a freemason, but show NOTHING of why that was actually such a good plot in the book.. and you get some shallow crap that was rightfully forgotten. This film alone is enough to understand Alan Moore's vehemence against adaptations of his work. In fact, it was probably this film that made that attitude in the first place as I think his name was removed from future (superior but bad) adaptations of his work. yeah yeah, we shouldn't always compare the film to the book and maybe this one tried so little that it shouldn't even be considered and adaptation.. but anyone who actually liked this NEEDS to read the masterpiece from which it took the name!
I don't hate it. It feels pretty dated at this point. Maybe all the jump cuts, faux slow motion and the 'visions' but I rewatched it a couple years ago and... I still don't hate it. Lots of liberties were taken and this was about as impossible of an outcome as possible but it wasn't meant to be a Ted Talk. I think a different edit would improve it.
This has got to be the most whiny pompous movie review I've ever seen. Hate when reviewers speak with such arrogance in their self delusion that what they're saying is the common consensus, when in fact almost no one agrees.
Ha...I LITERALLY just haaaaad to write something about this because I'm in total agreement..anyone's entitled to there opinion but the fact that he kept on enforcing his ridiculous ideas on the viewers was so ....RUDE...I just had to tell em how I felt...I just posted something as well for him

I love this film it’s fantastic
I didn't realize it until just now but a sentence with Johnny Depp play the same character in this as he did in sleepy hollow kind of out of his element and drawn into a world he was not prepared to deal with
I love these videos but, Joblo, you realize this isn't based on history right? its based on a comic book. I think you missed the point of the film.
The movie was good
Interesting, stylish movie with great Ian Holm performance (Depp was miscast), actresses were great also - good movie!
I really liked the movie and found it very refreshing 😌
The only thing ridiculous is the narrators annoying ass voice because this movie is fantastic.
This movie is not perfect (by far) but also not a total disaster, back then I rated it 8/10 so I guess I did like it 😉
Such a great movie. It kept me focused and on edge until the end. A fantastic cast of actors. I have to own it so I can enjoy it whenever I want.
I think it's a good flick
My wife and I saw it in the movies back in the day. I don’t think I hated it. Haven’t watched it since but I could.
I thought this movie was very well done. Great cast and character development. I don’t agree with your synopsis at all.
Almost certain every comment will be - I love this film. As it should be.
Never knew this film even existed.
Uh ya. Worthless.
Making Aberline a junkie was ridiculous. The guy was a middle aged, god fearing, meticulous investigator.
LOL all I can think about when I see this movie is how 20 years ago I was watching this with a girl I liked from hs and I was basically holding in a fart for the entire movie
I actually really like this movie
8:58 Jimmy Iovine is not one of the Hughes Brothers. He's just bald.
I thought it was a Sleepy Hollow sequel when i saw the TV spots at first
I read the comic first. That was a mistake. Saw this opening night, and I was dumbfounded how they came up with this film from the source material.
I loved this movie
They need to make Saucy Jack!
the best adaptation of Jack the ripper is the miniseries with Michael Caine
Hell, Tyler. We are in Hell.
When are we going to get an up beat feel good Jack the Ripper film?
I love this movie. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It surprises me that ya'll are hating on it so much.
This is a good movie actually.
I think the freemason angle adds to the film . The conspiracy theory is loosely based 9n fact too!
I was entertained by the movie, I cannot lie, but when I think what could've been.... geez
Love this movie
I’ve always liked this film
From Hell is a insult to the history of this story
I don't hate it. It feels pretty dated at this point. Maybe all the jump cuts, faux slow motion and the 'visions' but I rewatched it a couple years ago and... I still don't hate it. Lots of liberties were taken and this was about as impossible of an outcome as possible but it wasn't meant to be a Ted Talk. I think a different edit would improve it.
This has got to be the most whiny pompous movie review I've ever seen. Hate when reviewers speak with such arrogance in their self delusion that what they're saying is the common consensus, when in fact almost no one agrees.
Ha...I LITERALLY just haaaaad to write something about this because I'm in total agreement..anyone's entitled to there opinion but the fact that he kept on enforcing his ridiculous ideas on the viewers was so ....RUDE...I just had to tell em how I felt...I just posted something as well for him
I watched it on opening weekend
Yup
I love this movie 🎬
Compared to Moores grapic novel this movie is a trainwreck. Compared to any regular thriller, Id say its mid.
The movie is boring if you didn't read the book. If you read it, is TERRIBLE.
This movie could have been good, unfortunately it wasn't . The ending was unbelievably dumb .
This is the 20 WTF movie I actually saw in theaters. Is that good or bad?
