That's a big mill and sounds like it is well tuned in. Look forward to seeing a big giant 20ft hardwood log get whittled down on her. I sure miss the days when I use to pull the stick on my old 00 Frick. The days of sawing commercial crossties are over and these compact band mills have about took over the sawmill lumber. Glad someone is still around to restore these old dinosaur machines and show these young guys how its suppose to be done.

@@fricknjeep yes I have watched a few of your videos on it and you do a great job with it. Mine had a 54 inch blade and powered it with a chopped in half 383 Pontiac with a automatic transmission . Had direct pto drive straight to mandrel and a cable ran to the carburetor to serve as a throttle. By throttleing up and down saved gas. She didn't look like much but she sure cut through logs like butter. We made crossties and we also cut cants for pallets out of Sycamore and popular. I would sometimes fire it up on weekend for custom sawing those were good old days.

Looks _real_ nice, saws just fine, but...gonna need a longer 'push pole' (or a steady helper). 👍
Just like a new pair of shoes, it'll take a bit of work make it 'just right'...meanwhile, the old Frick mill is the 'worn but comfy' pair of boots. 😉

John, the beams where you load the logs onto the sawmill could be cut into so you could walk thru to work on whatever and those ends could be hinged with the old style barn hinges or whatever you could find locally.

It'll take a few tweaks here and there as you use the mill to get it set up to exactly how you want it, but it's a great first log sawn on the mill. Congratulations John.
On another, you may want to consider finding a way to keep the sun off your signed saw blade. The sun will make the signatures fade. Would hate to see that happen, especially after all the time and effort you put into it.

Is this new mill or old one painted to look nice..its set up a lot like our 1880 Amercian..would like to see how carriage drive is what makes it go back and forth....i see now it's old frick different drive then mine..the carriage looks very simular.the part on carriage that holds the pieces the move log are way thicker on my millyou need a log Turner assist though..notch the wood and put ash least 1 in solid shaft with half round on each end..normal you don't see it out of the way but turn the half rounds up and log will hit it and rotate around it as it turns in place..makes it easy for one person to turn big log

To many head blocks ,3 would do the job ,Set at 8 and 12 feet and you can cut to 24 foot logs. With that many blocks it will be hard to sit a crocked log. The wheels are on backwards , the guide wheels should not carry the load they could split . If you ever put in a log turner you will knock the carriage off the track .The only time you can run a flat wheel on the back is if they have a flange on them ( like a railroad wheel ). I have a American #1 that has been running at same location since 1936, still all hand set . I have ran it since 1966, U tube Isackson Saw Mill. see My idea for gauge and log turner .

    • @fricknjeep
      @fricknjeep  Год назад

hi there well really there is more waisted in a band mill . they cut about about 1/8 circular about 1/4 . band mill sawdust in not usable for animal bedding , , it takes about twice as long to saw a board on a band mill so if you are paying for helpers there is a lot of waisted time , that means a lot of money , , in the long run there it more waist , you will get maybe 1 more board from a 12 log .a nice see woodmizew would cost 3 times what i have in this mill maybe more , glad you stopped by john

VERY impressive restoration! HOWEVER, it’s time to quit fiddle-farting & make some sawdust…. And this, you need a wooden (removable) platform just left of your big blade. That’s what the rest of us Aught-1 sawyers have. That way, the knobs won’t hang up on your rollers. And this: when you hook the dogs on a new log, just put ‘em down. When you hook the dogs on a milled side, it takes both hands to hook the dogs….namely, you pull the dog out with your left hand & set the dog with your right…. or you could have as much as a quarter inch gap between the beam & the head block.
And this: your metal grate is too high. (Where you stand). A local sawyer tripped & fell into the saw. Cut his head right about where the hat goes around. He kicked like a chicken. I stand much lower so it’s very unlikely to fall into the saw.

hi there still putting this thing together , need a way to get the sawdust out next . and track wipes . i think the other little mill has what your speaking of , as for the hight i wanted it the same as my other mill . its hard to find time to work on the mill with so many other things coming first . the platform may not work because of the top saw , thanks for the thoughts john

No offense but you have your carriage set about 2 inches too high . You could cut larger logs if you set the rails don’t a few inches .

Congratulations to you, I believe we are of a certain age.
And that it's not easy to be fit for work at our age.
Small remark on your video shots, quite often jerky,
and having a slightly larger view plane would be nice.
But congratulations again for having reassembled a second log sawmill.
