What she says about Americans being obsessed with communicating and being able "to talk an hour about nothing" is exactly how I always feel. I'm American and I've always thought this way.
It's painful to watch the interviewer interjecting while she's talking. I don't understand why people say Bjork acts like a child or is hyper innocent. She's obviously very intelligent, and very mentally developed, she just speaks truthfully without pretension. That's how people are supposed to act. She's the one doing the placating by being polite and pausing mid thought to answer a bunch of shallow unimportant questions.
I agree--It's excruciating to see how people speak down to her 24/7 at this age in all interviews. First, starting off by implying that her English was bad--which Björk reacts entirely politely to. That must have been so hard, being an utter genius and being treated like a child for zero reason.
Talking as a Brit I understand where she is coming from where the brashness (forgive my terminology) and open speech of Americans can feel like being bombarded with sound and language. Brits are somewhere in between Icelanders and US in that we are somewhat reserved in our language and expression.
I believe she was 25 years old in this interview if it's 1990. Bjork is a smart lady. The interviewer is bad; it sounds like she's just asking anything off the top of her head. I feel like I'm listening in on a therapy session.
I got to see The Sugarcubes play at a small club in San Luis Obispo Ca., mid November 1992. A few weeks later I heard they had disbanded. It was such a great show, probably the best time I ever had seeing a band play.
This is what I have to say about Bjork. She has a kind of innocence about her that allows her to see the world in a different way. Its almost like she never grew up but she is still very bright. A lot of the interviewers I've seen have spoken to her in this childish manner because they sense her innocence. I appreciate artists with these kind of quirks because it makes their creative work much more unique.
Acro Kill. Yes, I think the interviewer did really well, I doubt she's interviewed anyone quite like Bjork before. She was careful to make Bjork feel at ease and to find something she was comfortable talking about and which was interesting to the viewers.
I felt Bjork was just being herself even if it did come across as somewhat like a child. It never bothered me and I thought she was charming and interesting. An entertaining interview overall.
Bjork is clearly nervous here. To me it seems like the interviewer doesnt seem as genuine in the conversation. I think bjork is picking up on how she is talking to her like a child and like she said earlier, Icelanders dont talk like Americans
many people get super hung up on "If I don't have this person's eye contact during 90% of the conversation, it must mean they aren't paying attention to me," and they get all emotionally wrankled for no reason other than someone told them this was important. I've had conversations like this, where I look around at things that comfort me, I hear every question and answer each deeply, and the person still insists on more because of the less than 90% eye contact. People are ridiculous and need to learn what's important in life in the moment that's happening.
She is so right about the non stop talking. I've long said that we talk a lot...we never seem to just enjoy silence. It's like people don't know how to handle silence.
Reading through the comments it is baffling and a little amusing to me how people are taking sides between Bjork and the interviewer. They are both clearly very nice people. There's just a culture clash going on. You know- the one they literally speak about? This silliness is unfitting. Bjork is a genius. So I am going to try and say a few things that I think Bjork would agree with: Positive thinking is good. Communication is good. Bjork finds beauty in the subtlety of communication rather than in the verbose meandering of conversation. Bjork is always in her own world. So are you. People from Iceland have less of a desire to express their opinions than Americans for reasons that she deliberately treats as vague and yet still maintains being respectful when giving what is a loose criticism. All is full of love. We talk too much and feel to little as a member of the human race. ALSO: To people talking about her as being similar to a little girl in her looks or personality, I think you are misguided. Not wrong. She is just a young-looking adorable person. Nearly 50, she still looks great. And she still acts just as uninhibited. Because she is. I find her very sexy. That's nothing more than a compliment. FINALLY: All of us commenting are passionate people, taking out time to put a little more Bjork in our lives. Good for us.
I like what she said about communication. Things can be spoken beautifully in other ways as well. I think she has always been good at conveying thought and emotion though vibes and visuals and quiet and sort of whispers of energy.
I have a photo of her from March 1990 in Montreal wearing the same jacket. I wonder what the date/location is on this interview. The leaves are throwing me off.
Weird. Very different from the brassy "Bjork Interview 1988" clip of two years earlier. Like she's dressing and acting like a precocious thirteen-year-old here. Is it because the interviewer is addressing her in baby-talk?
the "icelandic nordic pop warrior" looks so super elfin cute in this rare interview. takk fyrir, for posting this rare gem. poped in my 32gb thumbdrive ! ... warmth , ! ... björk hd .
As someone who has mixed background with Icelandic included, it's a weird, almost fetishistic thing people outside Nordic countries have for Icelandic women. The term "elf like" gets thrown around so much. It's kinda creepy because they are just women. Not little elves. Not childlike. The term people have been using to describe this odd perception of Icelandic women is "IGF," Icelandic Girl Fetish.
I think the interviewer is treating her that way because Björk is so shy, childlike, and endearing... I imagine she's shy and speaking a language she's not yet so comfortable with. I feel like being ten years old and her best friend when I see this - she's so adorable.
Man, I remember listening to the Sugarcubes in school. This interview is so... it just is cool to see a young Bjork talking about the English language.
is that like jerking off? why do people feel the need to share such crass things? If I never heard another guy share he was pulling his peter it would be too soon
I think the first time I heard Bjork singing was not long after her leaving the Sugarcubes. She has a pretty unique voice that was so amazing at the time, still is. :)
The constant shade expressed in this vid by both of them is hilarious... The interviewer is the most condescending patronising woman ever ...meanwhile Bjork is just being Bjork her very presences shades those who wish to to treat her like an idiot lolz
"It's just so stupid to sing in Icelandic when people don't understand it." Well, fuck. It's a beautiful language. WE CAN SING IN ICELANDIC NO MATTER HOW BAD WE'LL SOUND!!!
She sounds amazing in Icelandic. I wish for much more of it. If someone doesn't understand it, they can go on an exciting adventure of learning and get to know the beauty of the language, culture and history.
she's shy, childlike, and English isn't her first language. Why is that bad? The interviewer is talking down to ger a bit and asking dumb questions which would make her feel uncomfortable and less willing to make eye contact, but she's still an intelligent young woman here and deserves to be treated like one the same as anyone else does.
bjork seems to engage herself with looking at her hands or something else during a conversation, not much eye contact with interviewer. she can be very quiet and keep sharing to minimalism.
She said very true about American obsession with communication - it was noted long ago by Karl Gustav Jung (and he connected that with influence of black)
This is a great interview. I've read/watched hundreds of them and considering that Bjork is not making eye contact, is fiddling, and is keeping track of her then 3 year old boy, the interviewer manages to get some interesting conversation out of her. Does anyone know when/where this was recorded. It looks like early 1990, but then why are there leaves on the ground?
culture clash. bonnie and bjork are on two different worlds. they don't get each other. of course we are interviewing bjork. so it's an interview fail.
The interviewer is nice but obnoxious. It's funny that what Bjork says about americans could easily be applied to her. Anyway, thanks for posting. This is great.
What I wrote was just an opinion. I think it's one of those things you either feel or don't, and it's completely in the eye of the beholder. So, I think I'll leave it at that rather than go into details, sorry.
The Cameraman sucked because, in an interview, everything the subject says "and does" is important to help you understand. The camera should be getting her nervous tension being expressed through her playing (and destroying) the sticks and dry leaves. He does for a second but almost completely ignores her. She's soo shy. She is still shy but not as intense as this.
The interviewer is speaking to her in a manner which adults often use while speaking with an adolescent child. It could be due to the fact that Bjork's demeanor in this interview is that of an adolescent child.
***** maybe she takes pauses because english is not her native language and has to translate what the reporter is talking to her and translate again her answer. Besides, she said she comes from a place with very few people where famous people does´t exist so shouldn´t be a suprise if she acts shy in front of a camera talking about herself. Also she still talk childish nowadays, 20 years later so if she were actually acting somebody should give her an oscar. Not only a woman but she IS like a child and that´s why she does the music she does. And that has nothing to do with being a genious so why are you messing with her IQ?
***** More creative wavelengths are found in the average wavelength of a child, adults have a wavelength they get conditioned into over time that causes them to become less creative. So bjork always calms herself into this mindest that most adults are too frazzled to get into. Meditation can help people get in this mindset.
I don't know much about Iceland or the people I confess, but as a 70 year old lifelong artist (music, writing, theatre) I am seeing Bjork was an intelligent child with not much experience in life. However it does feel as if she is hiding her true self and hiding behind a kind of ingenuous personna which strikes me as a bit false--somewhat pretentious. She has always had this ingenuous quality and that's part of her intentional presentation. It makes her much more aggreeable but not very transparent. The interviewer is tip toeing around her because Bjork is so cagey and unwilling to open up.
If you do not agree with a comment, that does not mean it is spam. I received messages that their comments are being marked as such. Please grow up!
What she says about Americans being obsessed with communicating and being able "to talk an hour about nothing" is exactly how I always feel. I'm American and I've always thought this way.
that is such a bright and clever observation Katie, being myself an european moved in Us, which i love.
That’s actually one of the nicest things you can say about America
That's really only true when speaking about people from the Coasts or large cities...not really the case with folks from the country.
Delphi333 nah it’s especially that way in the country lol
I'm quiet and love solitude and I live in the states. No one place has one kind of person everywhere, that's generalizing.
She sort of shut down as soon as the interviewer said "your English has improved" poor Björk. She's magic
......I wonder how many languages the interviewer speaks?
It's offensive. She's trying to speak it and being told in essence that it wasn't good enough is insulting.
bjork: "americans won't stop talking. it's -- "
interviewer: won't stop talking.
Best comment on RUclips.
rthetazmod3 interviewer is Canadian, but a good point nonetheless
Canadian and Americans= most talkative Australians and British= less talkative
injanhoi1 And Björk is Icelandic, so that makes no sense.
Massive generalization.
bjork is so genuine.
It's painful to watch the interviewer interjecting while she's talking. I don't understand why people say Bjork acts like a child or is hyper innocent. Its like interviewer tries to compete for attention
She's 54 now looking 21!
Bullshite Thirty she just turned 94 she’s in her 90’s now but still makes music just not in the style of Cardi C!
I believe she was 25 years old in this interview if it's 1990. Bjork is a smart lady. The interviewer is bad; it sounds like she's just asking anything off the top of her head. I feel like I'm listening in on a therapy session.
she's the most beautiful magical creature i've seen
I got to see The Sugarcubes play at a small club in San Luis Obispo Ca., mid November 1992. A few weeks later I heard they had disbanded. It was such a great show, probably the best time I ever had seeing a band play.

eternal youth is real
Yeah it's called autism
@@user-sx7fu5ir2f she isnt autist wtf
@patatacampesina8286 she herself has said she thinks she is on the autistic spectrum.
She is such a sweetheart. I’ve been a fan since I was about 14 years old. I am 43 now and still adore her.
"Why does it sound like she is interviewing a 5-year-old girl?"
Why does it sound like the interviewer is driving a buss through a Zen rock garden?
Schuyler Hupp Because Björk is kinda acting like a 5 year old here. Not easy for the interviewer who's job it is to talk.
She looks so young! So pure and smart, so beautyful to watch her....❤
Bjork is clearly nervous here. To me it seems like the interviewer doesnt seem as genuine in the conversation. I think bjork is picking up on how she is talking to her like a child and like she said earlier, Icelanders dont talk like Americans

20 years asking bjork the same shit, iceland iceland.....
alaprima revista haha, I saw an interview where they asked her "wot's it like in Iceland? Is it rather cold? Does it snow a lot, or...?"
I love how she's just staring at the ground 99% of the time. So shy, so adorable ♥
i can tell she is intelligent and she is like me- crazy on the outside. so people often dont expect great things from us..
i just want to say, her authenticity is intoxicating in the best way possible :) love her so much
I love Bjork she is always authentic!
Omg she describes Americans perfectly “all this nervous energy”. I want to go to Iceland ❤️
She is so right about the non stop talking. I've long said that we talk a lot...we never seem to just enjoy silence. It's like people don't know how to handle silence.
i adore it
Stars don't exist in Iceland, because you see them on the bus and they fall from the sky... How adorable is that?!
Bjork is one of my favorite artist.she's ecclectic in style both music and dress. most of all she's cute and pretty
She's so shy in this interview!
Her English is better then most Americans.
Interviewer bringing moron energy. Björk being so genuine and open ❤
I'm glad I didn't see this video when I first heard the Sugarcubes. I would have followed her all around the world.
Big fan of bjork and the sugarcubes, lovely voice and love icelandic culture 🎉🎉💕

Justin Adams Wisdom, you and Bjork share a wavelength, I like to think I share it as well.
Urine Denial Thank you! Very kind of you. :)
Justin Adams I agree with you :)
BjorksMusic Thank you so much :)
I somehow miss you all, but I haven't met you yet. Say thank you to Icelamb for me.
yep. Sigur Ros sing in Icelandic and I don't understand it but I love it.
No matter all the negative comments, I like the interview.
I like what she said about communication. Things can be spoken beautifully in other ways as well. I think she has always been good at conveying thought and emotion though vibes and visuals and quiet and sort of whispers of energy.
I was like ohhh she was so cute when she was a little girl.... um 1990? she was 24! a ver ydifferent kind of person she is. I like her.
I have a photo of her from March 1990 in Montreal wearing the same jacket. I wonder what the date/location is on this interview. The leaves are throwing me off.
grahammj Interesting...March 1990 is the air date so it was very likely filmed the previous autumn, when she was in NYC.
Weird. Very different from the brassy "Bjork Interview 1988" clip of two years earlier. Like she's dressing and acting like a precocious thirteen-year-old here. Is it because the interviewer is addressing her in baby-talk?
Dang, exactly. The interviewer is lowkey condescending.
It doesn't help that the interviewer is speaking to her like she's eight.
I love her so much!
(...but yeah, the interviewer kept "talking down" at her as if she was a child.)
she's so shy, I love that
young bjork and older bjork.... I like them both ^^
Wow she's just a uniquely beautiful human being she has a way of restoring your faith in the human race
the "icelandic nordic pop warrior" looks so super elfin cute in this rare interview. takk fyrir, for posting this rare gem. poped in my 32gb thumbdrive ! ... warmth , ! ... björk hd .
This makes me feel so embarrassed to be an American.. love Björk.
Why?
Incredulously.
I think bjork has said she doesn't like being called an elf/pixie.
Who would?
As someone who has mixed background with Icelandic included, it's a weird, almost fetishistic thing people outside Nordic countries have for Icelandic women. Beautiful on the inside and on the out.
Oh help... oh this addiction..... I can't help it...... I can't help.....
...björking off.
Easy there Ricardo Lopez Jr.
Poor Ricardo Lopez... I'm just, you know, björking off... just björking off.....
Lol how true, me too
Lol BWC

I adore her.
Watching old Bjork interviews--you love the genius, you hate the interviewer. Every time.
Thaank you very much por sharing!!!!!
This is the first interview where i see her talking about Einar and their relationship (or sort of)
She's really cute here.
Aaawww! Poor Björk, she is so shy. Almost to a degree of social anxiety here. But, she has definitely improved.
I love Bjork so much
a super responsible mother, while giving the interview was also with the attention focused on her son Sindri, who were playing nearby.
"It's just so stupid to sing in Icelandic when people don't understand it."
Well, fuck.
Why is she talking to her like she is some baby or something?
+Viktor Overeighteen Look at her, she's a cuteness overload.
she's shy, childlike, and English isn't her first language. Why is that bad? The interviewer is talking down to ger a bit and asking dumb questions which would make her feel uncomfortable and less willing to make eye contact, but she's still an intelligent young woman here and deserves to be treated like one the same as anyone else does.
She is being very careful because djork is very volatile and is known for exploding. Watch the vid of her attacking a reporter at the Bangkok airport.
Do you have any other examples besides that one instance? This interview was also done before that.
tomaf Yeah, I doubt that's why. That was a one-time incident. Outside of that, she has a reputation for being very, very calm.
americans need to learn the importance of silence in conversation.
yeah. she's all kinds of amazing.
Why is everyone saying the interviewer is rude? Bjork is obviously shy and internal at this point, so she is just coaxing out some responses.
and interrupts Bjork constantly
bjork seems to engage herself with looking at her hands or something else during a conversation, not much eye contact with interviewer. she can be very quiet and keep sharing to minimalism.
Saw the sugarcubes 88 at one step beyond in Santa Clara . The place is a bingo parlor now
She said very true about American obsession with communication - it was noted long ago by Karl Gustav Jung (and he connected that with influence of black)
I think she was just sad in that moment, probably from before the interview itself.
Wicked cool video!
I love her description of Americans, its wicked
Love Bjork
The ADHD in me identifies with this so much.. @_@
saaaame
I know, Bjork made me feel normal when I first discovered her.
She's 25 here!!
icelandic, nordic, shy, pixie, elfin, super cute, goddess of sparkle, screaming masterpiece.
She did! I guess the music just comes out of her :o
Pure.
Shit?
greatttt and original..
Bjork is a hard interview... maybe this was one of her firsts alone w/out the rest of the band..
but maybe shes just being BJORK. Cheeers to her!!!
culture clash. bonnie and bjork are on two different worlds. they don't get each other. of course we are interviewing bjork. so it's an interview fail.
she looks like she's 18 she's kept her hotness til her 40s
21st november, (21-11-1965) born on a sunday.
She was 27 in the interview!
OMG those eyes...
i LOVE what she says about Americans communicating "wanting to talk for an hour about nothing" (@ 5:20)
The interviewer is nice but obnoxious. It's funny that what Bjork says about americans could easily be applied to her. Anyway, thanks for posting. This is great.
Well it *is* an interview. Questions and answers....talking. Pretty much a requirement. How would you handled this differently??
What I wrote was just an opinion. I think it's one of those things you either feel or don't, and it's completely in the eye of the beholder. So, I think I'll leave it at that rather than go into details, sorry.
I have that sense to in my old age.
cute

She appears very nervous. Not making much eye contact
yeah
She has shit for brains.
+Brighton DeChienne why u hate her?
+Brighton DeChienne that shit has produced some of the most genius art of the modern era
Austin Stois "Lol."
No seriously. Stop. I'm eating carrots.
Well we all know Americans... When they speak they're like using 5 mouths at the same time
sorry generalist but not this American. people love to love and hate America, it's quite comical.
Why does her face look so different here? Like beyond just different hair, she's very pretty!!
i fucking looooooooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeee herrrrrrr
❤❤❤❤
yes, you're right :)
Bjork is in a different place. The interviewer is playing catchup. She'll forever be playing catchup.
She looks a bit like some Finnish people to me.
So rude. How many Americans do you find travelling? I feel so sorry for her in this interview.
the interviewer is canadian
The interviewer is speaking to her in a manner which adults often use while speaking with an adolescent child. It could be due to the fact that Bjork's demeanor in this interview is that of an adolescent child.

well she is icelandic not american,an it's an interview so yeah...she is still awesome!!!
💕🎤😻
wery cute
She was 24 years old her act like she's a shy 14 year old. 🇬🇧👍
This is the interview that got her angry at everybody
I don't know much about Iceland or the people I confess, but as a 70 year old lifelong artist (music, writing, theatre) I am seeing Bjork was an intelligent child with not much experience in life. There's a very sad memory there. One can only guess the nature of it.
