this was a beautiful analysis. its rare to find folks actively going in depth on friends at the table - at least where i look - so this was a real treat :D

Thanks so much for watching! Honestly I feel I could have gone so much deeper with FATT; like there was a whole section about Dyre Ode that I cut for time. One day I hope I’ll have enough time and critical thought to do a whole longread on something like Partizan or Palisade!

Sangfielle is amazing and I had never considered it alongside Annihilation but you're absolutely right. I'm about to go and relisten to both!

To look into the abyss is to offer yourself to it. Take anything from it and it will take something from you.

fantastic work!! my favorite class from Heart is the Cleaver, a person whose dedication to intercepting the Heart on behalf of havens everywhere slowly (or rapidly, depending on the player) transforms them into a vessel for the Heart's power - they're the ones who get to be Angels! this reflects on one of my favorite characters of Sangfielle, Chine (go listen to the show to figure out what I mean)!!!!!!

Thanks for watching Coffee! And I agree, in a season of GOATs Chine was an all-timer

Add the film The Empty Man to your collection of media on brainworms. And also the older, quite similar, but cool in its own right, In the Mouth of Madness.

I was already considering reading Heart after rekindling my love for dungeoneering. But after this essay, it has fallen right into my to read list. You have a way of finding hidden narratives and tropes that connect the least expected pieces of art and, as always, a gift to spin them into a beautiful commentary. Excellent work once again, pal.

That was great fun, an interesting delve (fittingly)! I shared on the RRD server and a few other places.
Have you read/played Luke Gearing's Mothership module *Gradient Descent*? Not entirely similar themes, but definite crossover with exploring a new environment and emerging... changed... crossover w Rocco's Basilisk in there, too!

Thank you for sharing it! I haven't read much of Gearing's work unfortunately, but I'll have to take a look!

The korean film Parasite immediately comes to my mind few minutes in. It connects perfectly to the vid's theme.

great video :) very in-tune with the current meta of YT essays: pleasant to listen to and full of info to sink your teeth in. this is one of the few times where I've watched an essay of this type and I already knew A Lot of information on the subjects being discussed, and I greatly enjoyed it! you make a lot of interesting points and connections between the media -- the comparison between the Heart and Area X was so compelling I'm definitely going to pick up the book! probably the only Tumblr Blaze ever worth it for me 🫡
