Patara, somehow I got unsubscribed to you and thankfully, I noticed this video in the sidebar. This was an absolutely EXCELLENT video. Excellent, excellent, excellent. It should be mandatory viewing for anyone considering homesteading or just living period!
Adore you girl. Thanks for taking the time to lay this out. I know you don't have it right now but you keep on keeping on and helping other people.

Ma'am, I used to think I had "guts". Not a lack of fear, but, pushing through it to achieve the objective. You put me to shame. I used to think I was smart with common sense. Agaun, you put me to shame. I dang sure wish someone just like you was "running the show"; because, you impress the heck outta me. God bless you, Ma'am.

Patara, thank you -- I am sorry to say that this is probably going to be a video I watch over, and over, and over again. I can see the 3M headquarters from my apartment -- let me know how many cases of post-it notes you want :-)
If I were to add a 6th note it would be "Asking for help does not mean you are weak" So many people let pride or shame get in the way and they don't ask for help. There is nothing wrong with asking the neighbor to mow the lawn if you just cannot get it done. One thing that I love about frontier living is the knowledge that all your neighbors within 10 miles would stop, drop, and roll over to your place to help.
Random thought -- you hear of the days when all these families just show up and in a day build a barn. The Amish here are famous for it. Ever thought about a fund raiser (hear me out on this) not a please donate fundraiser, but a Pancake Breakfast bring your chain saws and splitting axes and fill up the wood shed fundraiser.
I do not know why all you homesteaders live more than 1000 miles from me, you are either in the Northwest, or Southeast. I would love to show up some day and just have the working gloves, bibs, my Minnesota t-shirt, and my bible -- and just do what ever you needed help with. (except the chickens, I am a city boy -- those things have claws and beaks. They are dangerous creatures)
God bless you and your family
    I am praying for you
And fear not, for God the Father is in control. You are never alone in life.

TerrilianReya And God Bless you as well. Life is a bunch of random events with a purpose. (I know -- huh?) God has a plan for all of us, and he allows our paths to cross when they need to. I found this channel after Fouch-o-matic opened up the carousel package and Nick grabbed the Tennessee t-shirt. And now I fell in love with the channel.
May the good Lord above protect you and give your heart a song to sing.

I am with you all the way on this, Todd. You so well expressed what most of us are feeling. And it's a comfort for US to know--that in our absence, our prayers are a POWERFUL force for good for Patara's family: James 5:16 "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth MUCH."

Patara, I just love you Sis. I love your straight forward truthfulness and your strength. When these unexpected things happen we have three choices, 1) run away, 2) bury our heads in the sand and 3) just pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and then forge ahead. It calls for an inner strength and I believe we only get by God. I wish I could sit and talk with you for two hours!! I love you, I love your videos and I love the message you have been entrusted to pass on. Stay strong and keep your eyes focused upward!

You are a strong woman, Patara. As a senior citizen, with three grown kids, married 49 years, I cannot add a thing to your advice. We women do what needs to be done, because we can adapt to the changing situation. Take care of your rest and personal needs, and you will continue to survive well. One day at a time, because we have to.

I think my approach is that family comes first...you hold onto the homestead as long as you can and then if you have to change what you are doing you do. Having a homestead helps with depression and food but sometimes the homestead is last on the list and it goes on the side.

Well said Patara. My family has always tried to plan ahead. Job loss in May, husband lifelined in July. But we're not hungry, the bills are paid, and we have a roof over our heads. You always have to plan for life, hunker down and circle the wagons. It's just a bump in the road. Praise God is GOOD.

You have a great way at looking at life. I truly believe that God only gives us what we can handle. My husband had an episode when he had an operation for kidney stones. Three years later was when he had his full heart attack our world turned over; but we survived. I could not afford to take off from work but work adjusted my schedule so I could attend to my husband. After shift in the car I went for a 3 hour round trip to the hospital and back home. Fortunately it was for only a week then he was released. He has since returned to work, he is a fisherman. This took place more than 5 years ago. This spring I paid the last of the credit cards that I had used at that time. It had been about a year that he did not have full income and I did what I had to do. Would I do it again? In a heart beat, it helped the family survive. I was already prepared with food stuffs, cleaning supplies and paper goods. What I was not prepared for was the cost of car repairs and gas. We had our own wood so we had that under control. But its hard when just in one afternoon go from 2 incomes to 1; by no means are we extravagant people. Our house is paid for, we paid as we went. Our vehicles were paid for by cash. Save money where you can when you can, believe me it will pay off in the end. I could go on but that would mean writing a book. Thank-you for listening. Hugs to all!

You are 100% right on young lady. You are a strong lady because you have grown up to be one. They aren't just born. Your boys will be good hard workers from the way you are teaching them to work. They may not like it now but some day they'll tell you how you was so right and be thankful you teach them right. My husband died nearly 28 yrs. ago. I raised our babies by myself. Our baby had just turned 24 months old when my husband died. He was born with my problems, including having life threatening conditions, & was/is multi-disabled. I home-schooled, raised our kids, & learned to wear many hats. I was always a strong independent woman but I have became more so with time. Our daughter grew up to become a strong independent woman too. She is married now but I know if she had too she wouldn't have a big problem surviving on her own. Our baby boy is nearly thirty and is learning daily how to prep and be prepared for emergencies. I had a stroke over two years ago and have had to learn to give up some of my " strong well" & to allow others to help me some but I'm still too hard headed for some but I am not going to just give up and die. I plan on doing all I can for myself for as long as I can. Patara, you stick to your guns honey. You are doing a wonderful job! Give yourself some time for yourself. Hang in there honey! You, your husband, and family are all in my thoughts and prayers. Xs from Okie land.

I love the simplify idea. To expand on that... turn your hangers the opposite way in January and July 1st. When you wear and wash your clothes, put the hangers in the correct direction. on June 30th and Dec. 31st. look in your closet. whatever you didn't wear, and still has a hanger facing the opposite direction, toss it. Sentimentality often leads to clutter you don't have time for.

A good friend of mine had a major shtf event in 2002. Her husband was jumping on a trampoline with his kids and attempted to do a flip and broke his neck at the C-3 He's been paralyzed from his neck down ever since. Of course he couldn't work ever again, had 3 young kids everything in their lives flipped upside down. Somehow she has managed to keep her job, take care of him because he does live at home with them, and do everything he used to do around the house on top of everything else. She is an amazing person and has been a huge inspiration to me. Many prayers for you and your hubby and family!

Your in my thoughts and prayers. What got me through my 1st. husband's illness and death was my belief in God, my love for my husband and his love for me, my kids, my family and a strength I didn't know I possessed. I couldn't believe it when people asked how I did it?. I did it for all the above reasons I wouldn't want to do anything else. See the good in things, (we would never moved to a rural area in az. if my husband hadn't become ill (he got to live 7 years in a home he helped to build (one of his life dreams). And so many other good things happened). So hang in there and believe God is with you and your family always.

I grew up on a dairy farm. Farm chores and household chores were just what we did!! Came in from school, changed our clothes and got busy. In the summer of course the chores increased. Did I have a wonderful childhood full of FUN, I sure did. I have cousins who agree fun on the farm was the best!! Some of their favorite times also. We did chores but had tons of time to play too......would not trade my childhood for anything!!

Grew up in the 50s and 6os on small working farm in the boonies. Everything you speak of my mother and father did and taught us and it has done us well all our lives. There were three boys, one with severe medical problems, there were episodes of life threatening illness and hospitalization for both my parents, but we were always prepared to deal with the changes and realities. When I look back I realize we were incredibly poor by the worlds eyes but we were very rich by family and faith. Your sons will be rich beyond measure because of your faith and teaching, they will most likely be honorable and a credit to their parents and community. Wealth and success is not in things but in Godly faith, relationship and community. I keep you in prayer that your family be well and whole and that you can continue to teach your viewers what is important in this life.

Been there done that 24/7 caregiver for fourteen years, while homeschooling and doing every thing myself. And yes, I had times when I wanted to escape. What saved me was a support group for caregivers that our local hospice had once a week. Hospice isn't just for someone who is dying. Then there were longtime friends from our community whom I had met vis 4H, political groups, county council meetings over the years. And even folks from churches we didn't attend offered help. Which is a great reminder that when we help others other's help us when we need help. I sent you a private message via Facebook.

Patara, you are a STELLAR mom. You are in fact, you are a stellar human being. This message is so important, whether or not they want to hear it. I'm going to make this short and sweet, but I want to share this with you. When I was 29, my husband who was 32, was dx with stage 4 cancer. The year was 1981. I was a stay at home mom. Eleven months after the dx, he passed. He died the day before our 6th anniversary. My children were 10 and 2. I am in awe of how wise you are for the years you own. When ppl ask you "How do you do it?" I hope it doesn't make you as angry as it used to make me when women would pat my shoulder and say "I don't know how you can be so strong. I could NEVER do that." Well excuse me, but I wasn't there the day I got to vote on iT. LIFE HAPPENS. You do what you have to do. I had to go to work. I had 2 children who were small to raise, and now I was all that they had. I, like you, didn't have a choice! You'd be surprised at what you can do when you don't have a choice. Patara, you are strong and you are brave. You have a heart as wide as the state of TN. I understand what your milk cow does for you, and it 'aint all about the milk. You, my dear, are an amazing woman and someone I truly admire. Don't you forget sweetie, you are not in this alone. God's got his hand on you and that is EVERYTHING.

Lord Bless you and keep you! It doesn't surprise me at all that the evil one has launched attacks against you and yours, Starry and Danny. Because of your powerful witness and example I pray that many will be reached and a softening hearts to the WORD. God Bless.

God has blessed us with your courageous and righteous example, Patara. He raised you up to be a teacher and a beacon, to be a comfort (after, for some and before, for others) our own hardest trials. It's a great thing to serve others even in your worst hours and days of suffering, when your faith is the most sorely tested. You show us that, "If Patara can survive this, I can survive mine." You're the person who would cheer up and give heart and strength to those who came to visit you, if you were in the hospital, than they who intended to cheer you. The Lord gave you the miracle of surviving your birth and you are proving every day why you deserved that miracle. I am speaking for many, when I say how grateful I am for the lightgiver that you are and am inspired by your spiritual heroism.♡♡♡

as i have told you from the day i met you... you are my Hero... Love you and all you talked about is spot on... We know that in the future my hubby is going to have to have some major surgery.. maybe and hoping for two or 3 years down the road, and for that matter we could have something major before that, but we are prepared as possible and we are continuing to prepare... Thank you for all you do....

Great video with wonderful advice from the heart!! Love your channel. Your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I have had as well as witnessed a similar situation happen in my family years ago and is what helped me get into prepping which has saved my butt way more times that I want to admit. Hang in there, "God bless you and yours and Thank You for your strength."

The Lord expects us to take what is given us.. its how we endure them.. we can moan and groan about our situation or we can go forward and do the best we can.. and with that attitude He helps us! He is always there.. and when we have a bad day.. cry our eyes out to Him and then get back to work! In the end we win! Stay strong Patara.. the gold ring is attainable! My little great grandmother cared for her very tall and big husband after his stroke. She had to dress him, help him up and down.. bathed him and helped him on and off the toilet! She endured to the end! Blessings!

This was so refreshing to hear! A real homesteader telling it like it is and on top of that, experienced and knows what she is talking about! So many so-called homesteaders making videos telling us how to do it and they are green and clueless! I have asked on a couple of homesteader videos what they would do if something happened to the other spouse. Never got a response. Now with you and Starry it is getting real and in your face! You are true examples of how it is done! Prayers for you and wishing you and yours well!

well said, be prepared and give yourself credit for what you do in a day. I have crayons that write on glass, my bathroom mirror is my noteboard and I cross off things as they are done, on a tough day it is good to visually see just what I have accomplished. There are times where that is my only "atta boy, good job" it gives me the incentive to be able to face the next day.

My mother married at 16 raised children through the depression in her late teens always told me, when something happens it's just something else you'll have to learn to live with. Just pick it up and go on. This was her philosophy in life. I am number 12 out of 15 children. I wish you well in your endeavor. God's speed

Sorry to hear about your husband. I hope he can recover soon and completely. This video was great. You reinforced to me why I fled the city and a lucrative profession to live a self sufficient lifestyle. Lots more work, but it's MY life. Be prepared has always been the key.
    Best to you.
