I was in miss NJ pageant 1988. I remember winner. What a beautiful girl. So cool she got 2nd runner up in USA pageant. I am glad I didn’t win. I joined navy in April and met my husband in bootcamp ❤️ what a great year 1989 proved for us all. 34 years later and five sons this NJ girl did good for herself
Longtime pageant fan. My mom taped this pageant for me when I was 8. But she missed the first 3 minutes. First thing I always saw was Courtney Gibbs presenting the Parade of States. Having stumbled upon this video now, I can't BELIEVE I missed that awesome opening number to Lucky all of these years! Watching it over and over. LOL
Of all the past hosts of Miss USA/Miss Teen USA/Miss Universe, the late Dick Clark was my favorite. Boy did CBS do an outstanding job of televising all three beauty pageants. it is worth noting that the late Dick Clark hosted all three pageants in the same calendar year from 1991 to 1993. What would truly be fabulous is that the production entity that has always borne Dick Clark's name could acquire outright the entire Miss Universe Organization.
Absolutely Dick was the best. As for Sidekicks I liked very much Ali Landry and Julie Moran, but my favorites were Deborah Shelton with Barbara Eden and Terry Murphy 1991-1992.
I'm not sure how you could beat Bob Barker. Dick Clark had no personality or humor. Bob always made me laugh and was a master interviewer. Angie Dickinson was also a little boring as well.
Actually, Jude Devereaux one of the judges let it be known that she placed Gretchen as the fourth runner up. She thought that Gretchen was overly rehearsed and came across as a phony.
As a Dallasite, I was of course rooting for Gretchen and had her as the winner from the get go! I had Miss California as runner up! That gown ruined any shot at the top 5.
Colorado was 10th with an 8.388. Virginia in swimsuit was 8.384. Then North Carolina with an 8.324 - Two very attractive women that would have made it should there have been a top 12! But the top 10 was very well chosen - MAYBE i would just switch new jersey for north carolina but really great top 10!

Bob Barker continued to be the best host but he often showed favoritism in his semi finals interviews.

Actually, it was their 5th consecutive win that time. They are the only state who bagged the MISS USA title for 5 years straight (from 1985 to 1989).
