@@grandviewlivestock3936 Okok ya we are having that right now last week was real nice but frozen solid now for the next week at these then should be good to go in about a month
Greg, we run a farm similar to yours, cattle crops, and sheep. Could you explain your reasoning a little more of why barley instead of other crops? Was this a field you could have planted beans instead? These decisions of what to plant were easier when we had $9 beans.
I wanted to try Barley because it will come off early like wheat and is in a field that is adjacent to some we graze. We can plant a grazing mix there, after combining the barley. I want to strive to try something new every year on a few acres so this is new for me. Many people used to plant barley around here but no market for it anymore. I have always heard it was great to feed so we'll see. Your right, it was an easier decision when beans were $9.
Looking to plant barley this spring. Any tips? I’m in NC Kansas
Hey Greg, do you ever drill annuals into your existing pastures?
Yes, I've used sorghum Sudan. It works good, is very competitive into the fescue. You must get summer rainfall though.
How late can you plant barley just snowed yesterday was going to plant after it melts in about a week
Whenever you can plant spring oats in your area, you could plant barley. That would be up to mid or late march maybe in Eastern KS.
@@grandviewlivestock3936 what’s the earliest? Thanks for the reply
@@Slaughterk360 When the ground thaws and it won't sprout then get several days of hard freeze.
