      Hey I love your writing! I love your reviews. I love the story you’re showing us in snippets. I love everything you are doing…buuuuuuut please change your 2d character design.     Ubisoft’s downfall is deserved. After their whole “don’t expect to own your games” schlock they spouted, I only got their single player stuff on disc used and never buying them digitally. They were against the consumer for over a decade, don’t expect the consumer to come back.

      I'm not one to defend multi billion dollar corporations but the glee people have over ubisoft failing anything is crazy, especially because it's lately attributed to that quote... which was misquoted "gamers need to get comfortable with the idea of not owning all their games" and a personal opinion of an exec not a studio policy and was in regards to streaming services

      @@JJJBunney001 I know, and yes I did misquote, but that’s the problem. Locking story based content to live service or subscription services means there is no preservation, and if there is no preservation, it becomes like what happened to me as a customer of Bungie and Destiny 2, I paid $120 for both launch and Forsaken, and what did I get? All of that story content whipped, gone, no replayability. That kindof mentality isn’t okay, it means they want to push out game ownership in the long run, like how they said “time savers are not pay2win”, then a decade later there are constant XP booster microtransactions in SINGLE PLAYER GAMES.
      This is wrong, it is greed, and they need to hurt if they are gonna make up BIG to customers if they want me to care again.
      Plus the way Ubisoft disregards lore in Assassins creed (since Desmond’s pathetic death in 3 and had Juno’s death in a comic) means they don’t care about the fan’s intelligence. If you can’t make a story run forever…DONT HAVE IT RUN FOREVER.

      They literally had the blueprint to make THE Pirate Game on their lap and somehow made something worse, that the sheer failure in itself is the most impressive part of the whole train wreck, they essentially took a pot of gold and tossed it off a cliff expecting it to come back to them

      I'd argue it's worse than the typical Ubisoft game, as far as gamplay goes. The stealth is even worse than usual, as is the gunplay.

    Honestly I just can’t force myself to get interested in anything Star Wars related anymore. It used to be something special but now even if it’s actually serviceable i can’t help but see it as corporate nostalgia slop!

    I knew it was bad, but when you have the DROID WANTS TO MURDER PEOPLE and the GUY WHO WANTS A DROID TO MURDER PEOPLE quests being right next to one another... and not even related?
    The only question becomes 'why'... who was in charge who thought this was a good idea?

      I just played the quest, the guy that requested the droid reveals that he wants it to be a surveillance droid/spy for the crimson dawn (aka not a combat role) and so the combat droid is a bad match. I think Zenny either lied about the quest for dramatic effect, didn’t do the quest, or just didn’t pay attention to the dialogue

      Well, I do know from talking to people in the industry that a big problem is that they purged a lot of Gen X who were actually competent from the industry. A lot of the millennials (who are now older) and Zoomers are infamous for terrible work ethic and not wanting to do anything but their specific, itemized, job, and noone really is good at "big picture" thinking. This is why you have so much clipping with outfits and hairstyles and models and such, it's because you have these different art teams and none of them are even willing to talk to each other to test anything, so if say someone makes a new outfit to sell for the cash shop, they might not be able to get the hair team to test it and adjust things so different hair styles won't clip through the collars and such. This is not a new problem, but it's gotten worse and worse at times, and is one of the quieter problems with the micro transaction model. You'd be shocked how many people are just not buying stuff because they might have spent so much money for a digital item and then found it looked like crap for their character in an MMO or something.
      I mention that because I'd imagine the answer is simply that they had different quest teams, they didn't talk to each other, and actually refused to work with anyone else or coordinate because it "wasn't their job" and oversight long ago lost the ability to crack the whip on some Zoomer and force everyone to get together on one team and force them all to do something cohesive.
      People have been pointing out tons of narrative and conceptual disconnect in the game, beyond other issues. As the video points out, Kay's personality isn't even consistent. I theorize based on what I've heard in general that part of the problem was that people writing different quests and areas all got to do their own scripting, and none of them were forced to check with each other, and no one in oversight had the ability to just tell different people to work with each other to make it all consistent.

      I don't blame them for having a "I'm only doing what my exact written job is" type of mentality.
      Not much incentive to go above and beyond really.

      @@thereseemstobeenanerror1219 Well, I will say this kind of attitude is part of the problem. Beyond the issues in the game industry it applies to all generations beyond mine really.
      If your going to advance in a place with advancement possibilities, and be in charge, it's important to understand that the job of a "boss" like a supervisor, lead, or manager is as they say "not to do the work of ten men, but to get ten men to do their work". Thus when someone tells you to do different things, by learning to do them decently, your showing you know how those things are done in that place, then later if they need someone to act as oversight overall, your someone who can at least keep an eye on everyone doing their jobs, and even if your not as good as they are, you have some idea of what they are doing.
      If you have a bad attitude about this and even trying to juggle multiple jobs, they aren't going to ever promote you. At that point it's easier to just promote from the outside as they think your not willing to do what it takes. Ditto for the so called "work/life balance", that kind of concept only applies to people in very specific jobs, either ones that someone was actively recruited for due to them being recognized as the best early on, or were worked into over a long period of time. For most normal people, it's about earning your way into a position where a concept like that isn't going to be a hilarious concept to any workplace that wants to make money.
      Likewise, people who tunnel focus on only what they are specifically demanded to do, will drag everyone down. Game development is a good example of that, because if you say have people doing different assets that don't mesh together because no one will work together, check in, or otherwise properly coordinate, then the product begins to suck and less money comes in means less benefits and appreciation for the employees, along with them being seen as increasingly disposable. If the end product sucks for the consumer, there is no reason to keep you around.
      Terrible attitudes among younger workers is a big part of why workers have become so disposable. If your not going to grow, get better, and learn to do more things, then why should they pay you more seniority when they can just hire someone for a starting wage to replace you in that job? It actually becomes a common sense thing. Paying for an expensive, well established, set of workers is only worth it if the results of that team amount to more than is being spent on it. Greedy companies can tank their companies by firing loyal workers with good attitudes and wrecking the product they were responsible for. That said at the same time it's stupid to keep a bunch of lazy kids who refuse to learn or do anything else around, and pay them more and more money each year. It is a double edged sword, and can go both ways.
      One problem is that workers tend to empathize with other workers, and people who are used to having oversight positions tend to associate with that. The former always outnumbers the latter. In my case I have a good bit of experience with both so very much understand both perspectives. I'm retired due to disability, not because I sucked at my job, or became rich.
      Another thing far too long for a youtube response, but I think it merits repeating.
      I think one of the problems with companies like Ubisoft and other "woke" companies is that they tend to make ideology and having activists bring in other activists the major criteria, rather than any kind of job performance. Thus someone who should be canned for having a terrible attitude and only mono-focusing on one thing and not working with others, can actually stick around for a long time and spread that cancer to others similarly favored even more than it would be a problem. This leads to crappier product, along with everything else. I think we're seeing the results of long term activist infiltration now where people in things like game development can claim legitimately to have ten years of doing the job like that should mean something, when they never did the job well to begin with. An incompetent lez-dyke revolutionary who never learns anything but sticks around for 10 years due to long term DEI initiatives, is still going to be incompetent after 10 years due to the inability to learn antyhing and nobody being able to call them on it, make them change, or boot them out the door.

    No way they did those bodyguard droid quests like that on accident, they must be some sort of joke the devs played on the higer-ups. They can't be THAT dense and stupid to work for probably months on end on those two quests without realizing their intersection.

    Nah, that first Sliro scene is just fluff. He doesn't gain anything from monologuing before killing his opposition. Just have their food poisoned. It's purely for the audience, and sort of lazy. Maybe he should've had them over to talk about some proposals he'd made, and they say something about how one sided the terms are, then have him gun them down to show that it's more of a convenience. This alludes to him having ulterior motives, maybe what he proposed suggests more about him and his goals. Could've been way better and more meaningful.

      @@Zenny-RUclips what point in the timeline did you start playing? I started just before that v4 map released. The one where you died of dehydration after spending like 9 hours in the progression system hellscape cause there were three water sources and a giant canyon cutting halfway through the map. I think I played on that map a total of 3 times. Played on wynter realism, Isla Nycta when it became the only active realism option, and TheIsle.Realism (TIL:Realisem)back in ye old days.

      i started playing about 3 months into the development of the Evrima Branch, where they started remaking the game from scratch. so I played on the spiro legacy map, and all 4 of the iterations so far of the evrima map. I LOVE the isle, but I hate it. and I cannot wait to hype up a video on it in the next year or 2

    About the Rep/Moral choice system. Starsector... not Starfield, Starsector. Starsector taught me that if you want a moral choice system in your game, you need to make the morally right choice mechanically difficult. If your game is all about being a criminal that's morally ambiguous, making the 'heroic' choice should make the game significantly harder, and potentially lock you out of cool stuff.

      Frankly, I prefer the minuscule (but full of interesting stuff ) planets of Outer Wilds. Granted, it is not the same thing, but I think well crafted maps (like those of Subnautica or Satisfactory) are far more interesting than almost anything generated procedurally.

    ND-5 just makes me sad, man. He's such a cool fucking concept (Droids in trench coats are just so drippy, don't @ me), but he just falls so fucking flat. You could have him contrast so well off of Kay by having her think with her heart and him with his brain (Computer? Processor? Whatever-), while also maintaining the throughline of him being the only one to stick around Kay in a life where everyone else just constantly comes and goes.
    The bouncer interaction could have gone so much better if ND-5 had been more of a secondary main character. Picture this: On the way into the bar ND-5/Kay see the speeder and comment on it and/or realise it belongs to the bouncer, and ND-5 gets an idea. Kay heads inside, tries to persuade the bouncer, but fails, but then ND-5 comes in (having, I dunno paid someone off to steal the speeder) telling the bouncer his sweet new ride's been nicked, and offers to help him get it back, on the condition he lets Kay inside. The bouncer agrees reluctantly, and as Kay heads into the bar, as she looks back at ND-5 and nods at him, after which he reciprocates the nod and heads out.

    I'm glad I waited to make a decision on this game until your review, Zenny. The Ubisoft discussion well has been beyond poisoned, so I appreciate how you focus on actually critiquing the characters and mechanics while sneaking in your humor and kick ass animations.

    42:01 okay, I'm sorry, but vines or nets are not more creative in any way. They usually feel just as artifical, personally. And if they're integrated into the level design well enough to not stand out, we're back at "playtests show players being confused about where to go"

      The comparison is to yellow paint. Making something stand out by using on-point set dressing is inherently more creative than yellow paint. It's the slightest bit more effort than literally saying "follow the yellow brick road."

      I think instead of going off just coloring places where you can climb, why don't they just have a visual effect happen or better yet color it in a way where it makes sense and fit the whole world theme. For example, if it was a horny game, you would have a blood trail leading to attic or dripping from the attic in a way where you would want to check it out. I know it might not be the best example, but there are ways to show something that is interactive. Even zenny mentioned some things like a rock sticking out more than others while it has melted snow on it, unlike the rest.

    Was always a bit on the cautious side but Star Wars outlaws shows all of Ubisoft's weaknesses and no amount of Dlc will be able to fix a boring and weak fountain. Oh well get to save 70 bucks

    The stealth:combat in this game is honestly like FC3 and 4, where even if you land a perfect headshot on a guard; whose nowhere near the others, with a suppressed weapon, all the other guards are instantly on high alert and know exactly where you are.

      Not really true. I’ve hit headshots without alerting other guards in FarCry 3. If I didn’t kill with the headshot…now that’s a different story. They absolutely know exactly where I am.

    How is Kay driven when she won't go straight and make a decent person out of herself? She will hustle low money gambling tables instead of accepting a few credits from a friend that she is mooching off of to make something better of herself. That's not driven.

      Well, I'd imagine the idea is that she wants to do it on her own, and is supposed to have a general disrespect for society at large, as well as little idea of how to deal with it like a normal person as she's never been a normal person. There have been a fair few characters like that written over the years, but the team did not talk to each other, or do any kind of research.
      I think what they were trying to go for was a sort of gender swapped, and less-than-attractive version of Harry Harrison's "Stainless Steel Rat" before he got drafted into galactic law enforcement. It's a somewhat different take on it from Han Solo, but it goes in similar directions. His wife (who never does go straight) would be a great inspiration for someone like Kay. Part of her theme was originally as I remember that she was born ugly, and then uses technology to have herself re-sculpted to be basically a sex goddess, but she has a terrible attitude with a lot of people due to how she was treated before she had the money to do that. They could have done something similar with Kay to make the statement they wanted, while still having a character the players would find visually appealing.
      Incidently in those stories, she falls for "Slippery" Jim Digriz (The SSR) as she's one of the only people that could go toe to toe with him mentally, aside from the super cop that eventually catches and recruits him. The fact that he respects her for that before ever having seen her is part of what made it work as I recall. It has been a while... and well they wind up having two kids who are entirely criminal grifters that are even worse than their parents.
      I guess the point is that there have been so many "Space Rogue" type characters over the years, many of whom were quite popular and successful, that it should have been really easy to do a "Space Underworld" story in the spirit of Han Solo without actually aping him entirely. If they had hired me as an overall writer for this, I admit, I wouldn't plagiarize directly, but I'd certainly have taken inspiration from the best. I doubt most of these writers are familiar with any of that stuff though which is kind of funny and makes me wonder what the hiring criteria was.
      At any rate not only did they have people terrible for the material, as I said in a few places, I'd imagine it's the Post-X problem of no one talking to each other, refusing to do so, and toothless oversight unable to force it, so you wind up with a disjointed character based on some basic ideas who has constant tonal shifts, and never manages to actually mesh well with the game world or the game play, which are themselves sort of disconnected from each other to begin with.

I get what you are saying that they implied, but all of the smugglers she dealt with had minions and support systems. She was needlessly and annoyingly standoffish to the people that actually wanted to help her, and at times not smart enough to have ever gotten that close to the main villain. Not to be given work, or to be enough of a threat to keep watch over or manipulate.

    When I started playing, I saw the cut scene with the mom and the whole lesson on 'nobodies going to be there for you' or whatever. I thought this was going to be a way bigger theme in the game; I really expected kay's mom to have had a larger role either in manipulation of kay, using Kay without Kay's knowledge or to be another bad guy that was working for slirro and saw a way to take over from slirro by using Kay. What a bummer.

    It's not an exaggeration to say this is some of the absolute best animation on this site, coupled with a really fun story. Every new video I"m completely blown away, especially because I see the improvement each time. In this case, I'm losing my mind over cinematography!! The dynamic way a lot of these shots are framed. Also the gestures of each character are both insanely natural and distinct between them. I'd buy a bluray of the compliation tbh. Now back to watching the fight scene another 20 times

    Every time I think it can't get worse, someone releases a video making me aware of yet another failing of this stupid game.
    And I still can't get over how stupid it is that she can one-tap a stormtrooper with her bare hands and knock them out. I'm pretty sure if someone just bonked me in the back of the head, with no helmet, with their fist like she did, they'd get more hurt than I would. Skulls are hard. Finger bones are brittle. Punching someone in the face is generally considered a terrible idea as you will shatter your hand and might not even knock the other person out. Doing that to someone wearing a helmet? It's so stupid and we're all already sick of the Stormtrooper slander. It's not the main character is a jedi this time. She's a nobody. Stormtroopers should be TERRIFYING for her.

    Outlaws ticks me off because on paper it's my favorite kind of game set in my (once upon a time...) favorite universe. But everything I've seen and heard about it has completely turned me off.
    Nevermind that I'll never pay full price for an Ubi game after that "get comfortable not owning games" announcement. Yeah, sure man, get used to me not paying for your games.

    There are some good story beats to the game, and a few points where I felt legitimately invested in what was happening. Some of the puzzles were fun, but overall the game was a little too much on rails.
    One thing that’s fun and actually pretty challenging: being at the highest wanted level. I felt like the Empire really wanted me dead.

    As soon as I saw the marketing this game was a hard pass because why would I want to play it?
    Why would I want to play as a normal person in the Star Wars universe? Star Wars is a cool universe but personally, I didn't watch movies about space wizards fighting each other with laser swords, epic wars, space battles, etc and think to myself, "Wow, I wonder what kind of shenanigans the petty criminals of this universe get up to"...

    42:41 I remember the developers actually adressing this. They didn' it because in the movies most speeder chases involved the main characters evading and dodging and they wanted to replicate that feeling and experience. "We wanted to make a mechanic that made you experience chases, rather than having you feel as if you can ride in and assault people from the speeder." - Fredrik Thylander, Ubisoft Massive
    Apparently, the reason why speeder combat ended up playign like it does in the final product was because they couldn't program the speeder to drive well while aiming your blaster. And considering how the programmed the two I fully understand why they couldn't make them work together, because those two systems are already kind of clunky on their own. They actively made choices to make the game anti-fun because they couldn't program it well enough, and they don't even seem to have fully realised it.

      Alot of behind the scenes work dragged this out to 3 with all the modelling work. But keep in mind I work a full time job and only get like 3 hours a day for this sorta stuff!

    I'm still mad that the original plan for this game was to make The Division but we're Mandalorians traveling the galaxy.
    It's why Ubisoft had Massive you know the studio that makes The Division to make this game.
    Instead we get Assassins Creed in space where everything is milk toast and the stealth sucks because the developers have no experience making a stealth game...
