I really REAallyyy respect the amount of physical work the main actors did in this film, horsemanship, weight training and sword training. They didn't just go skip around and rely on the stunt double.

the mechanical snake is like 1000 times better than today's CGI beasts we see in the movies! Way to go for the old school special effects guys (I also watched similar documentary about Nightmare On Elm Street, and it's the same with the famous scene when the first victim dies in her sleep, with the moving room....100000 better than CGIs).

John Milius is so friggin awesome. "If we didn't have Arnold, we'd have to build him." Brilliant stuff. This movie has the scope this kind of story needed. Lots of sweeping vistas and intense, realistic confrontations. And let's not forget James Earl Jones. This man has a fantastic close-up stare. Such a great film all the way round.

Such an epic movie... I wish they could have repeated it with Conan the destroyer. I watched the second movie when I was a kid excited and came out disappointed... but Conan the first movie I was floating out of the theater! I got it on VHS and watched it a couple more hundred times as a kid. This movie was my favorite movie as a child back when adults took their kids to the movie and didn’t worry about ratings. This movie is just the most epic movie of Arnold’s career! Man I don’t see how they will ever make a new movie or show...

I was 9 years old Channel Four aired all the Arnold movies in 1997 and Arnold became my childhood hero along with Stallone. They spilled blood when whimps like Kevin Sorbo tried to impress the audience as another Conan and then as King Kull of Atlantis. Remember that we are talking about proper fantasy that needs to be acted accordingly. Arnold had sóme flaws in this movie that he should have corrected, But his presence and substance(for the most of the film) are enough to be remembered, Critics at that time were sissies favouring movies that were either of poor comedic value(I wonder why they thought that Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn were funny because the only funny people of pure comedy I know from that period are Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy with his stand-up and Leslie Nielsen) or that were left-leaning stories of poor people fighting the government. When 300 was released in 2006 there was big outcry in review in iltalehti, citing that it was nothing more than despicable war porn that should not have been made. These films were not made for leftist sissies, they were made for male audience. Dark Horse's Conan stories are good, have a sense of chivalry and punishment, are violent and have damsels in distress or in dire need of male comfort. Those are the substance to commence with when new movie is written

I first saw this as a kid when I was visiting a friend of the family. I was the only kid there and it was on cable. From the first scene to the last I was enthralled. After that day I became a viking and sailed the seven seas in search of adventure. Whether I was decapitating foes or manhandling hoes, everywhere I went there was metal music playing in the background.

My dad took me to this movie when it came out. It was great! I was around 12 years old. However, during the nude scenes, I was very uncomfortable. I mean my dad was right next to me! Coming from a strict Catholic upbringing I was surprised my father would bring me to a rated R movie. But he was a big time fantasy fan, and that rubbed off on me. For that I am grateful.

I felt the same way around my Dad, he took me to see "Altered States" in 81 when I was 12 or so. Theres an explicit sex scene in that movie. I felt really weird with my Dad sitting right there. He took me to see a lot of sci-fi. Even saw "Quest for Fire."

Seen Conan the barbarian in the theater with my dad when I was 15. Actually changed my life, got me into making swords, and other things carving and sculpting; you name it. it's funny how a movie can have a profound affect upon a person's life. Cool thing is when they did the 20th anniversary Albion was making the swords and I had the enter the contest. they asked about the length of the handle material and because I had made scale versions of the atlantean sword. I had based it on Schwarzenegger's height I kind of knew the answer. I guess a little bit low, I was afraid if I guessed over I'd be disqualified. I guess something like 25.69 ft. The answer was 26 ft. I won which got my name and a quote where I bought the atlantean sword published in their book celebrating the 20th anniversary of Conan to the barbarian. There was an article about Conan the barbarian then the quote from me and about the sword I had gotten and then an article about Lord of the rings I thought it was kind of cool.

WHAT? What a HARDCORE crap said by Raffaella De Laurentiis (somewhere after 3:06) that they decided NOT to film in former Yugoslavia, because the political situation was bad (meaning, they were afraid things could escalate into something truly bad - obviously, from "today's" perspective, she says that they were not sure whether they'd be able to finish the film before the Yu-wars start), so they moved to Spain (and with it, postponed the film for additional 6 months - meaning, this had to have been at least in 1981). Well guess what Raffaella! Not everyone's an idiot and knows well that back in the whole decade of the 1980's, Yugoslavia wasn't just 1000% safe country (most likely, the safest in the world, definitely in Top 3), in every possible aspect, but many people regarded it as a true paradise in Europe, when the continent (and the whole world) was politically bipolarized!
The (truly) bad & unstable political situation, followed by the wars, started a whole decade after you (Raffaella and your film crew) were there, beginning in 1991 and the real horror was after 1992!
And this is a fact well known not just to the peoples from this part of Europe, but to anyone who actually knows something (even in general terms) about late 20th century European history!
Thus, you've moved the production in Spain, for completely different reasons, not the ones you're saying! That's obvious!
