Nowadays, the species of sandalwood most sought-after for their unique aroma are threatened. In New Caledonia, one species that was practically exhausted in the 19th century has been rejuvenated through a sustainable cultivation program launched by a Kanak agronomist, Jean Waikédré. His scheme has given fresh hope to perfume creators like Christopher Sheldrake, a “nose” for Chanel.
Once abundant in India and throughout the Pacific islands, those species of sandalwood most sought-after for their perfume have been the victim of unchecked over-exploitation and are now threatened. The essence extracted from its wood sells for a fortune. In India, still the world’s leading exporter at the end of the 20th century, the perfume of the renowned white sandalwood of Mysore is now no more than a memory, and it will take at least 50 years to save the species, if this is even possible.

It most certainly does affect America, as i can attest, living in very center of the country the scent of Sandalwood mesmerizes all who are lucky enough to emcounter it.
