  • In this video i leave Philippa in Bonaire and do a solo sail back to Curacao to pick up a new Elvstrom mainsail for Aequus.
    It's about a 80 mile round trip which gives me a great opportunity to see how our Bavaria C57 can be sailed single handed.
    When i arrive in Curacao I meet up with our friend James ‪@thelastpirate‬ who helps me fit the new Elvstrom mainsail.

    To be fair to Elvstrom sails, we have to say that 3 boats fitted with them we have never had a problem with quality or stretch. Last boat a Bavaria, 12 years no issues still good when we sold it. Impavidus, 5 years + plus and still crisp and sharp. So good to see parts of the marine industry standing behind their product. Some don't..... Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

    Great Video - James has taught you well. With this video, its like I am a friend you are taking with on your trip. Jame from Zingaro has the same speaking ability. Like James you are giving me a more intimate look into your personality. Example would be the cooking breakfast.
    Also because you are on video, strongly suggest when leaving the cockpit to have a life vest on.
    Keep up the great work and look forward to more.

      British food is crisp sandwiches, or fishfinger and salad cream sandwich - heaven! What's not to like?! James went for the crown of British culinary expertise: a fry-up with HP brown sauce! The food of champions, as he says; superlative
      Have you ever seen a finger on a fish? Captain BirdsEye has.

    I have found that when I need to motor upwind, that if I roll out a very little bit of the genoe (50% or so) and sheet it tight, it provides significant speed increase and much less pounding because it helps to pull the bow down and through the waves instead of up and over them
    .

    • @SailingAequus
      @SailingAequus  3 года назад

      Does that work if you are head on to the wind or do you need a bit of an angle?

    • @haydenwatson7987
      @haydenwatson7987 3 года назад

      @@SailingAequus I sheet the sail so that it is about 1/2 as close to centerline than normal by trimming the leeward sheet hard and then adding some to the windward sheet to pull it about 1/2 the distance to the centerline. You have a self-tacking jib so you may not need to do that but haul it is tight and flat.
      You then fall off just enough to fill the sail which on my boat is only about 10º apparent 15º true. The speed increase and comfort more than make up for the small extra mileage.
      For full disclosure, my boat is a 30' masthead rig with overlapping genoa but I have suggested this method to others with larger boats up to the low 40' range and they found the same thing. The motor alone is just not powerful enough to slice through the waves and you end up riding up over and slamming off the back side. With the bit of extra pull from the flat jib, you power through rather than riding over the crests of the waves.
      Nest time you find yourself in those conditions and let me know how your boat does. All you have to loose is rolling out a bit of the jib and if you do not like it just roll it back up and never leave the cockpit.

    • @haydenwatson7987
      @haydenwatson7987 3 года назад +2

      @@SailingAequus The first time I did this, I was heading out into the Straight of Georgia, BC, Canada with 35 knots on the nose and +60 miles of fetch. I saw about 2' of the keel stump on another 30' in my group as he crested over the tall short period waves before slamming back down with the rig looking scary under bare poles. I was only able to make 1.7knts at wide-open-throttle and told my wife that I either needed to put out a bit of sail or we would need to turn back. I rolled out 6' on my 30' and strapped it tight. My speed increased from 1.7 to 7.1knts and instead of crashing off the backs of the wave crests, we parted them and went mostly straight through. The ride was so good that my 14-year-old daughter crawled up in the vee-berth and went to sleep.
