- Hey guys!!! I’m back with another video. My apologies for the long delay. I had to take time off to deal with a couple of things but I’m back with a shared experience of my life in America. Join me as I discuss the cultural difference of a South African living in the states.

South Africans have a positive opinion of African Americans because we have a very similar history of racial oppression. We understand you. And immigrants to South Africa from other African countries insult us and have a negative opinion of us too. If there in one group of black people who are in solidarity with African Americans, it's South Africans.
I’m a Hebrew Israelite and I must say I take a lot of my inspiration from African-Americans spiritually. Your journey through difficulties of slavery, Jim Crow and history of struggle for equal rights is inspirational to many Black South Africans. Even through your music we get inspiration, as a group of people. Your contribution to the upliftment of the Black race world wide can never be under stated. However, there are few individuals who choose to keep ignorant about the continent, and believe on the negative narrative regarding the continent, such action always hurts. I can understand why some Africans sometimes are not so receptive towards African Americans. We hope such experiences expressed in this video will go along way in mending those broken bridges.

Many people in America do not know very much about African countries. I know about South Africa because I know people from South Africa, a friend who is Zulu, a friend who is Colored, a couple of White South Africans whom I worked with and after my friend who is 'Zulu told me stories about SA, I had to do research, the history was quite shocking to say the least.

I’m from london and we actually say petrol and we drive on the right too. Most countries in Europe drive on the left though. But yes things are expensive in the West.
However what is good is that it’s a melting pot, you meet people from all types of backgrounds 🙌🏾🙏🏾

I'm glad you spoke about how Africans feel about blacks in america. The narrative here has always been black americans are not welcomed or wanted in Africa, we are looked down on by Africans. It's refreshing to know that this is not true! Communication is going to have to play a key role in getting us back on level grounds. We love all you guys in Africa and wish we could be there instead of good ole amerikkka!

The reason America has calories and things listed is because americans have the highest obesity rates in the world. And instead of making healthy foods more attainable and affordable, they choose to list calorie intake.
And they put ALOT of fake food and chemicals in our stuff

You remind me of myself when I first came to the US in 2001 from Phalaborwa, Limpopo. I spent 3yrs on a working holiday visa working & traveling across the length & breadth of the USA. I met people from all walks of life & made lifetime friendship with them. In January of 2004 I went back to South Africa but after getting that exposure of living on a different continent, I knew I wanted to travel more & see the world. In May of 2004 I came to the UK on a 2yrs working holiday visa & 16yrs later I'm still living here & enjoying everything about Great Britain. One thing I've noticed about the two countries is that the UK looks after it's citizens much better than the US. For example in the UK there's free healthcare for everyone but in the US you need to have some sort of a medical insurance to access treatment. Second point is, in the USA if you don't have strong family ties you can easily become homeless. In the UK there's a social housing designed for those who can't afford to buy or rent from private landlords. last but not least we've got a very strict gun control laws here & very few people own firearms. It's also cheaper & easier to travel across Europe from here.
Highlands of Scotland wow thank you for sharing this and for watching. I’m leaning towards going back to South Africa next year and perhaps stopping to travel Asia first before leaving the US for home. I’ve been trying to imagine what that will feel like after this exposure and growth I’ve experienced and I feel like I might move to another country shortly after returning. It’s amazing to be able to experience these cultural differences and I would love the opportunity to experience as many as I possibly can.
@@oleratoyoga you're welcome sesi it was great to watch you sharing your travel life experiences. If you still want to travel the world more do it now before you start a family i.e. kids, husband etc. When I went to the US I was only 20yrs old just imagine at that tender age in another country on a different continent. But through the grace of God & self discipline he kept me out of harm's way. We are in this world for a limited period, live life to the fullest & enjoy every minute of it. The UK is also a melting pot of different cultures. I've learnt a lot through travelling the world. If you manage to get to Asia try the likes of South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia etc they're all fascinating countries with different cultures. After Asia you can also try Europe & believe me you'll have the best time of your life. Europe is so steep in history & culture. The UK is also home to historical figures such as William Shakespeare, Macbeth, William Wallace, Robert Burns and others. & All the historic sites are still intact as they were during the medieval times. Most of the British villages look like something from a novel. I wish you well & keep going sesi the world is your oyster!

First of all, you’re absolutely beautiful 🥰 I’m from SA too and I’ve been living in CA for 2 years. Batong everything is so expensive fam 😩 me and RUclips have become friends for hair and nails. Braiding prices are ridiculous. And what’s worse is when you live in the whhhitest area, there’s nobody to do it so you have to travel hella far to get it done. Nah fam. I’m good 👍🏿
Charmaine Tom America is pricey!! But the west coast is the most expensive in America!! That’s why a lot of people in America are relocating to my region in America which is the southwest or south east (Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia & Florida)

Sawubona! First, I absolutely LOVED this video! I'm from the US but I studied at UKZN in Durban. I'm trying to convince my husband to move to SA now, and you brought up a lot of interesting points that were culture shocks for me in SA! Regarding the gas stations, there are 2 states where they pump your gas for you: New Jersey (where I'm from) and Oregon. I remember crossing the river and needing gas in Pennsylvania and sitting at a gas station waiting for someone to come pump my gas, but obviously nobody came! lol so it can even be a shock for some of us who are from here!
Also, usually if you see a lot of police in a particular area, it means it's an unsafe area and requires more police. Depending on what state you live in, County Police are just for show and don't actually do anything. Based on your geotag it looks like you're near DC (the nation's capital) so in Virginia you'll see more State and County Police than somewhere like New York or New Jersey.

Lmao,😂😂😂 I'm born and raised in Atlanta, and if someone tried to pump my gas for me at the gas station, I might think they were coming to try to rob me.🤣🤣 I'd be completely thrown if someone started pumping my gas, I wouldn't know if I'm supposed to feel sketchy about it, help them, or tip them!

Actually here in South Africa they are employed by that certain gas station , they not just random people who just gonna come out of nowhere to help you
@@yathahoraya8110 I got that. I figured in South Africa they were employed, and their job is to pump the people's gas, and that is normal to see there. I was referring to the OP saying that someone in New Jersey and Oregon were pumping her gas. It's not something that happens in the states ANYMORE. It did happen in the 50s, back in the day, people stood outside and pumped people's gas, and they were employed by the gas station, but that practice is long gone in the US, to the point where I would actually say I don't believe the person that made this comment is even being truthful. I've been to New Jersey, and no one has ever pumped my gas there, and I doubt they're doing it in Oregon either. It just doesn't happen here, and if it did it would probably freak the person out, because it's not something we do at all, and it's pretty normal in the US to watch for people approaching your vehicle at the pump, because it's way more common for that person to be approaching you for a nefarious reason, such as robbing you, car jacking you, or even to harm you. Not that our gas stations are super dangerous, but being approached at the pump today in the US would be far more likely that something bad was going to happen, rather then someone helping pump your gas. I can honestly say I'm in my mid 30s, I've been to 41 states in the US, and I have NEVER not one time had anyone try to approach my car to pump my gas for me. Not that I think anything about having someone working at the gas station pumping gas, if it's customery somewhere then it's just apart of that place. But this lady speaks about being shocked when she pulled into a gas station in Pennsylvania, waited for someone to pump her gas, and no one showed up, to me; an American, it sounds very unrealistic.
I feel concerned when putting gas into my car in the USA, especially at night. You could possibly be robbed. Police usually don’t make people feel safe, but that can depend on the person.
If you live in a crime ridden neighborhood then yea getting gas at night could be an issue. However, ive never had an issue with safety at a gas station night or day🤷🏾♀️
Yeah police do not make me feel safe. As a black American you will rarely hear us say that.

I'm a pretty brave person, but there are very few places where I'd gas my car up at night here in the US, and at least some places where I lock my handbag in my car's trunk/boot before arriving there. Also, I'm white but I don't think my Black friends and neighbors necessarily feel comforted by the heavy police presence here. There is so much excessive, and sometimes deadly, force used against Black people - especially males.

Please excuse the America education system. Its the reason so many of us have small minds when it comes to other countries. When being taught of Africa, we are taught about it as a whole. They no longer break down and go into depth about the many countries, languages, diverse cultures, etc etc. I'm not even from Africa and it irks my nerves at the ignorance people have of the continent. I remember years ago having to sit my nieces and nephews down and give them a quick lesson on how beautiful Africa is. They didn't even know there were malls. I was so disappointed in their lack of knowledge.

Yes, braiding hair is ridiculous here but I'm black American so it's normal. My cousin always braided my hair for free. I was shocked at how cheap it was throughout Africa. If you are in California or New York life is too expensive. Georgia is cheaper.

Good video. There should be more connections between people of African decent. We are all over the world. You were right in the beginning about the misconceptions Americans and Africans have about each other. It was used as a tool to separate us.

If you like having gas pumped for you, then maybe New Jersey or Oregon would be a good fit :D . Its illegal to pump your own gas in those two states.
I know this is a late reply, but the schools in my area all have gates around them. However, you are 100% correct in my opinion that the majority of houses in the United States don't need fences. It is more of a luxury than a need, unless of course you live in an area that has a higher crime rate.
Also I have never hear of a bank like that hahah but it sounds cool! Normally the ATM is outside the bank in my experience.

Girl I totally understand you on the braiding part. I’m American myself and it makes me sooo sick that these Instagram/free lance hair stylist overcharge you to get braids. There’s a girl in my city who charges $400 for the goddess locs you have on in this video. I don’t think braids should cost no more than $100 because they really don’t last that long anyway. Also weird question, but what size is your sweatshirt? 😌 I was going to get one and didn’t know if they run big or small. Anyways Great video and you are so pretty!♥️

I think in South Africa we also have different police. Like flying squad and pop and and and. We have metro police. The hawks which is like their fbi.

Schools don't have gates but you need verification to enter inside if you not student and the police are always station at the school and around the block
Day light savings time is a remnant of the time where the country was full of farmers. The same with the times of the year students are at school, the US hasn't let go of the 'farm life'.
Be aware that in the US, the thing at the top of a pencil is called an eraser. In the US, a rubber is another name for a condom. A newly arrived male college student friend learned this when he asked a female classmate if she had a rubber. 😄

At least our South African flag is displayed on our taxis and it is befitting. I remember one day riding in a taxi that overtook a police car chasing robber's car, A short while later we overtook that robber's car. It was crazy ek se.

Didn’t know you guys still have gas station attendants! They used to be common in the US. New Jersey still prohibits people from pumping their own gas, and Oregon does too except under certain circumstances. My parents grew up back when attendants were still common. Mom was shocked the first time she saw someone actually pump their own gas. But it’s been so long since it was common here that the last time we were in Oregon, Dad wondered why a man was approaching our car!
So, if South Africans are on a driving trip, and you guys stop at a gas station to buy snacks, does one person stay with the car? Do your gas stations even have convenience stores?

But would both people go to the convenience store at the same time, or would one stay with the car?

Yes we do go to the store but you need to lock the car, actually we even have mini shopping centers located around gas stations on highways! And they’re actually safe but if it’s a remote station and at night that wouldn’t be safe

I was watching KoreanBilly's English channel and two Americans, one from Carlifonia and another from Texas, were giving differences in their English. We use like a lot because English is a 2nd language after our mother tongue, so when u describe things and you can't find English words, 'like' helps close the breaks, so we don't think it's cool and not many South Africans are interested of what is happening outside of South Africa. As someone from Europe who one day would love to visit SA, I found your points very interesting. Concerning different ethnicities in the US, I have heard that asking ppl about their ethnic background is even considered iinsulting, or racist.. which is wild. Such a shame.. I am like you, I also enjoy guessing ( or learning) different people's origins and mother tongue, but in today's world that is sometimes seen as offensive. Maybe SA is more relaxed when it comes to living alongside other cultures.

This was so informative! But I should warn you as you travel through the states, that traffic rules are different lol. We have many full service gas pumps here in NY, and turning on red is something that we do further out in Long Island, not so much in the city, for obvious reasons. Also.. your hair is amazing. After you have been in America for some time you will get over the sticker shock of hair braids. And you will also stop comparing dollars to brands. It took me a year to get over it. I found housing and hair very expensive in North America.

Love this video!! I'm Sudanese-American, born and raised in the U.S. I think it's important and interesting that you bring up the crazy obsession with flags. It really is because of the nationalistic and extreme culture that we're brought up with here. America is a hegemon- a global bully, a global superpower. We get brainwashed to believe and learn that we are always right in history and this seed of extreme and dangerous nationalism is placed in us. Even people of color like myself. Luckily many of us grow up and realize how brainwashing the system was to us- the education system, government sometimes, etc.
