  • Our second Reggae Bass Master Class with Devon. This time he shows us how we can create different tensions by playing slightly in front or behind the beat. Using one simple groove - Bob Marley's "Running Away" ( Bass: Aston "Family Man" Barrett ) we learn about relaxed finger techniques and the use of octaves. These tips are for both advanced or beginners on bass or any other instrument. Fundamental lessons on Real Roots expression.
    Drums: Donavan " Puss " Miller

    it's the best video on reggae bass! so few people pay real attention to the vibe movement - synchronized, pushed forward or "laid back" behind the rhythm! Thenk yuh, Mr.Bradshaw!

    Appreciate I'm coming to this late (over 5 years after it was published), but this is magic. The rhythmic subtlety is astonishing. It all appears so simple, but it's anything but. Devon is a master musician. Thanks so much for this.

    Hello Devon, thank you for sharing your Reggae music knowledge. So beautiful... Would you say that the effect of playing behind the beat is meant to create a feeling of being a little high or buzzed? It feels slightly disorienting and trippy, so I was wondering if that's the interpretation of it. I'm not relating to the ahead of the beat feel. Are there any bass players who are famous for doing this in reggae music? Thanks! Peace...

    • @ReggaeintheRuff
      @ReggaeintheRuff  10 лет назад +1

      Can't wait to see how Devon answers this one.

    • @wendellbatista9649
      @wendellbatista9649 10 лет назад

      I'm a reggae bass man I can answer that for devon..most reggae bass players play a little behind the time it's called swinging..horns also do that in a lot of different styles of music..it just makes it nicer.

    • @DonyaLane
      @DonyaLane 10 лет назад

      bassie touch
      I know what you mean about that nicer feel and playing relaxed behind the beat. It's an important musical feel to understand and maintain. But when Devon first demoed his "behind the beat," he REALLY exaggerated it, almost in an extreme and "distracting" way. I would never want to listen to an entire song like that, because it almost made the groove feel too busy and disorienting. But that built-in "delay" effect is usually heard in breakdown sections and instrumental interludes, etc., where I feel it works great. That's why I was asking if that exaggerated feel was meant to create a high or buzzed "psychedelic" sensation.

    • @wendellbatista9649
      @wendellbatista9649 10 лет назад +2

      Not at all to create that sensation...if u listen to bob marley music u will notice that the bassman plays like that on most songs.prob in every song. ;)

      OK, cool... Thanks for responding further. I'm a musician (piano/keys), but reggae is one genre of music that I never got to play or analyze in depth, until very recently. I never had the opportunity to work with reggae musicians. But I've always loved reggae music (LOVE Bob Marley, of course), and I always accepted reggae, without really examining it beyond simply enjoying it as great music. Recently, I started playing bass (I accidentally discovered how naturally bass came to me and how in love with the instrument I've become). I especially love reggae bass, and I will be listening with very different ears from now on. Thnx!

      Thanks for watching Nicolas. Devons Reggae bass tone is some deep shit man. Real low end. You are not going to get the full spectrum on a cellphone speaker or cheap ear plug headphones. You can tell by the hundreds of comments here that a lot of people are able to hear him just fine. Try it on good headphones or an adequate sound system. It's worth the effort! Give it another try brother.

      Greetings and thanks for watching our video. We have heard a similar comment 2 or 3 times before concerning the bass on this video and also Devon's Reggae Bass Tips #1. We believe it may be because you listening to it on a cellphone or maybe with poor headphones. Am I right? These 2 videos have about 350,000 views to date with only 3 comments like yours. So please try watching on a different system or with better headphones and I hope that works better for you. We will try to work on this issue when we produce our next sessions,
