never thought i’d see the day when me and tom holland have the same bias in BTS. I saw a few tiktoks over the past few weeks talking about how popular celebs are ditching old plastic surgery trends for new ones inspired by Korean entertainment and Kbeauty. After Squid Game and Kpop Idols started taking over the world people are starting to adopt a new standard of beauty through their fashion and facial features. People noticed after seeing Ariana Grande come out with a new patch update. I thought it was a very interesting topic to talk about since everyone and their dog is going through some sort of K-POPification. Hollywood Celebrities Have Discovered Kpop and I’m Scared #edvasian

@lovely morning star I’m sorry what..? Gender and race are totally two different things. Anyone can be whatever gender or sexuality they want, but no one can be “asian” just because they feel like it and other race in general. Especially non-pocs who never dealt with the hate crime, trauma etc they went through.
Obviously this video is talking about HOW Western celebs are trying to imitate korean/ asian looks because it’s “hot/trendy” when it’s not… They did the same thing with BIPOC, The body figures, skin, hair etc. Even Kpop has taken influence from rap/hip-hop, clothing etc..
Weird how yt people can just choose what race they want to play for, for the day.

i personally really like korean makeup and fashion trends, the soft-rosy-slightlysparkly makeup looks are kinda easy to achieve and they look good on almost everyone, and the "everyday fashion" of plain colors and layering looks really cool. With that being said, i wouldn't like other stuff about korean beauty to get popular : the need for plastic surgery, the obsession with luxury brands, or those totally random stuff like having a "small face", a long neck or having literally no pores.

100% agree with you there, liking and wanting to try the fashion trends or makeup techniques isn't an issue for me but in reality the beauty standards are very harsh idols get hated for having a "ugly" face, plastic surgery is given/ required by idol companies (I believe) if they wanna make it in the industry because a pretty face is so important. it's unrealistic to be searching for that level of beauty and perceived perfection, (which i am guilty of by using apps like snow) but perfection doesn't come from having zero pores and it'll never be achieved anyway bc you'll always be unhappy with yourself if you chase the perceived beauty standards to be regarded as pretty by others.

Army has been there for BTS and BTS had been there for Army. When what these people are doing is trying to make a copy of how they market stuff/ how they do things. But that would never be as genuine ever, since they’re doing this for the money and just the kardashians as an example, they use any scandal they get to market/ profit anything and not to mention they’re trying to be a whole different race 😭

This is why I don’t ever like trying to fit beauty standards. You ultimately either never fit them or it immediately changes once you’re considered “ideal”. Everyone has beauty just the way they are. It’s better to just learn to love yourself for who you are(despite being harder) and make your appearance the way YOU want it. Like surgery is completely fine, but do it to please YOURSELF, not to please others.

On May 28, 2016, a three-year-old boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden where he was grabbed and dragged by Harambe, a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla. Fearing for the boy's life, a zoo worker shot and killed Harambe. The incident was recorded on video and received broad international coverage and commentary, including controversy over the choice to use lethal force. A number of primatologists and conservationists wrote later that the zoo had no other choice under the circumstances, and that it highlighted the danger of zoo animals near humans and the need for better standards of care.

I sure do understand this weird feeling of once being the only one to like kpop or asian media in a group of friends and now have people constantly talking about it, but I hope everyone remembers that the kpop industry dreamed of being part of this whole "hollywood club" all this time. But since Korea was such an isolated country,it took a long time, and we all got used to the way it was, and now when they're finally "becoming a part of it" ( I used "cuz honestly,I dont feel like the KPOP INDUSTRY it's being integrated onto it, but instead only what's famous in the moment, aka, BTS) it feels weird for us.
My problem is not them interacting with americans our international artists, and surprisingly, not the whole promotion everywhere either. But instead the fact for anything to be included onto the Hollywood, or even just americans famous people club( which are seen as an achievement of huge success), they have to """""abandon""""" their culture and become americanized. English songs, english propaganda, american style dance moves and songs. It's one thing to try and communicate with fans around the world, but I feel like this is getting out of control, and it somehow no longer feels like kpop.
I always had this feeling towards any international artist, non-americans, when they suddenly gained huge fame. I've always been happy for them,of course! But this whole idea of turning everything into american to be considered huge success, it's what bothers me.
Somehow, it feels like when they reach that "mark of success" everyone claimed about, it becomes weird, because it was not made for Asians, or Latinos, or an other culture that isn't initially part of this "american success goal", so there's no searching to try and understand other cultures, so it ends up feeling like a trend thing, that they're there because of a trend.
(obs:I'm so sorry if this all feels confusing, I tried my best to express my initial idea with my dog poop english)

@M G read my comment again please, i understand that bts changed, and i said thats not a bad thing. its expected with the fame they have now. but the song quality of an album has nothing to do with their circumstances. they can write anything and people will listen to it. even if it so called "flops". the problem is that they can't write with the same level of lyrical meaning in english as they can in korean. sure, it might be just as emotional and relateable, but they are limited. i'm not criticizing their choice to be mainstream in america, if anything, i understand why they are doing it and i am glad they have the success they do. its definitely great for asian representation. i am simply criticizing the songs themselves and how being "radio friendly" is seemingly the most important factor for their success. and yes i have listened to that album, and i like majority of songs on there. but again, almost the entire album is in korean. might i emphasize that its not the eras that i miss, its the songs. but that doesn't mean that i want them to go back to that era. all of my current favs in kpop right now might have had amazing eras in the past, but that doesn't mean i wont like what they come out with next. gg in particular are killing it music wise, and i wouldn't have said that in the past. i can curb my nostalgia. btw i wasnt one of those kpoppies that criticized them for their socially critical songs. just because some people in the fandom do things that are questionable, doesn't mean everyone is like that. (also sidenote, i personally just think bts vocal line sounds the best in r&b style minus jungkook who suits both really well tbh. but thats just me)

I don't see the problem with kpop stars setting trends in fashion worldwide. American and european artists has been doing this for years, everyone follows what they're wearing and stuff. Fashion it's universal, I see kpop artists and hollywood artists taking notes from each other, there is many western trends that you wouldn't see in korea years ago and now they're wearing it. Nothing that kpop artists wear in awards are unique, because they came from luxury brands, everyone can buy them if they have money. What makes it a little different it's the fact that they don't like showing their breast area that much, so you have more behaved clothes usually because they have to look more angelic or innocent, it's a society thing while in USA they like to wear more revealing chlothes. Also the thing with the bbl it's stupid, people did this invasive procedures so they could have the kardashians boody and now the kardashians don't want these bodies anymore it's hilarious. I'm glad that in my country bbls were never a thing, if people want to grow their butts they would just go the gym.

Your video reminds me on a conversation i had with my boyfriend last week :D he said "why is everyone of my favourite actors involved in KPop?" And yes Tom Holland, Ryan Reynolds, the other guy he mentioned... all of them are friends with BTS, EXO, Stray Kids or another group xD Even Elon Musk is friends with one of the Loona girls xD Tbh, sometimes I`m not sure if all these celebrities REALLY like kpop or just act like they do to gain more popularity. It`s really hard to tell who really likes it and who just wants to profit from it. Many american celebrities acted like they like KPop but ended up being cancelled by the community because it was obvious that they were fake (cough cough Jason Derülo and Charlie Puth, I`m looking at you)

To be honest, I personally don't care about Korean beauty standards or any other country. Yeah I have many things which I would love to fix about my body but I don't care about looking like someone else or letting other people decide what I should do. I just want to to fit my own image of ideal beauty which would make me happier not just follow the trend. People literally changing their racial traits to look like other race and whatever is too much. You can be pretty in any weight, skin color, height and all. Everyone should have their own beauty standards and a style that make them feel the most confident and comfortable. Yes, you can change your looks but do it to please and satisfy yourself not others. Why is looking the same considered great? difference is what makes the world truly great in my opinion.

What's hilarious (but not really) is Black girls in the 90's wore colored hair, bright street styled clothing, and long colorful designer nails. They were made fun and called ghetto. Thirty years later, their style is normal and trendy. The early 2000 Hip-Hop style is making a comeback, too. Trends come and go and come back. KPop is having its moment but as was said, their style was based on Black American culture. I just like the world can appreciate each other's cultures. Black people enjoy Asian culture so it's natural that other cultures would enjoy our culture, too.

I live in Korea right now. He did mention that KPop was influenced by (or to use another word: appropriated) black culture. It's interesting to see how young millennial or gen z Koreans kind of treat Black people the way Westerners treat Koreans now in that they commodify Black people when it is beneficial to show off how "hip" they are. However, the whole thing is really complicated. Couple that with the fact that the majority of Koreans don't care about the whole "Asian fishing" thing anyway, the whole discussion just becomes meh. For younger Koreans, they have other issues they find more pressing than Western celebrities using Korean people to make themselves cooler (e.g. the Korean job market, going to hagwons, being overworked, the virus and the current mandates the government has).
Also, it's hilarious how people in the West look at K-fashion for their inspirations. I wouldn't necessarily say black, beige, tan, or brown monotone looks paired with a black long padding are fashion inspirations, but that's just me. LOL

Let's not pretend kpop hasn't culturally appropriated black culture, their aesthetic and things like that. Plus with plastic surgery being so common in Korea (like getting double eyelids etc. which is not a very common feature there) I don't think we can call out other people for the same and call it a day. This is more complicated than that, it's not like this is the bad group and the this is the good group. Humans are shit in every part of the world and everyone steals or appropriates the other. It's all about who gets noticed the most.

Kpop is 100% completely influenced by Black culture and SM Entertainment literally started their first kpop boy group by copying 90s Hip Hop and R&B and appropriating Black culture, from our hairstyles, to our rap flow, to kpop idols saying the n-word left and right not giving a crap about Black people.... The genre itself was built off of copying Black America and profiting off of it. So yes, kpop is extremely westernized and has been since the start, LONG before Twice and BTS started putting out full english singles. Another observation: it's really disappointing how kpop idols want to appeal to an international audience yet so many of them continue to do blackface, blaccents, saying the n-word, wearing box braids, etc. (the list goes onnnnn!) . If you truly want to gain respect of an International audience, then the very least you can do it respect Black culture, the very culture kpop would be NOTHING without. Really ironic how kpop idols wanna be international yet can't even give respect to the western culture they stole from!

I was watching a boy group perform one day and it hit me: these folks, more than likely, are getting all of their cues from the social media pages that belong to black content creators. Their Korean choreographers are getting their moves from black TikTok creators and their RUclips videos. Cos, I doubt these choreographers are learning these viral moves from black members of their communities. Their stylists are watching rap videos off of RUclips videos and using these white-owned fashion brands to recreate looks. Their hair stylists are more than likely watching hair tutorials in order to attempt to replicate natural black hairstyles.
And they do alllllllllllll of this, but they cannot find their way to educational RUclips videos about Black history?
Then there's the music. Most of their songs aren't even customed for them. There's a reason why they haven't worked with the likes of Timbaland, The Neptunes, No ID, DJ Premier, Kanye, Boots, etc. It's because those producers want their money and won't accept nickeling and dimes that these labels do.

I'm not worried about beauty standards from South Korea making its way to places like the United States. America is way too diverse with people, whose "mother cultures" have their own beauty standards. As an African-American woman, I can definitely say that we're already having our own battles with our own beauty standards (i.e. body acceptance-neutrality, colorism, texturism amongst the natural hair communities, the CROWN Act, 'slim-thicc' versus thin versus fatness versus thicc) to even really focus on Korean beauty standards.
As an American, I will say that like some Asian cultures, thinness and white skin are still considered American beauty standards. Despite being shoved down our collective throats by our media, the majority of American women don't want Kim Kardashian's figure. Or, her sisters' figures (except for Kendall), for that matter. Celebs like Taylor Swift, Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Lopez (who is not as... bountiful, in person) and other thin celebs are still admired.

    • @emma-m12
      @emma-m12 2 месяца назад

that’s because western markets are more profitable and these companies want to extract as much profit as they can. also new jeans is inevitably going to resemble western culture. their whole genre is rnb in korean, they borrowed elements of American culture so they are inevitably going to resemble western culture. kpop is still a unique thing in america, in that the whole way of doing things in kpop is entirely different from western cultures. Idols are seen as more like dolls than artists , whereas here in the us, artists have full creative control over their music and can do whatever they want, whereas in kpop it’s limited. This is seen in the words that are even used to describe them, idol vs artist. Kpop is still a uniquely Korean thing, and it will always be like that, but when u have a dominating western culture, a capitalist society, and companies that are seeing how profitable western markets are, there’s inevitably going to be a westernization of pop culture around the world. This is not a new phenomenon, you can see this within Japanese citypop in the 1970s and 80s for example, where they borrowed English words for their songs, and their musical style was influenced heavily by western styles. This is not inherently a bad thing, it’s just how humans work. We all copy each other. But trust me, kpop isn’t going anywhere. It’s still something unique to korean culture.

And it's not necessarily 'not for real'. For example, I literally had no idea that K-pop existed before 2019-2020. Seriously. I so wish that did... I'm sure I would love it as a teen, but I never heard of it and none of my friends did either. I only discovered it because BTS started blowing up in America and I saw them in that Carpool karaoke episode. Now I'm obsessed and I've been discovering new artists and listening to this music every day for the last 2 years. I'm sure that many new K-pop fans are very genuine, and this new popularity of the genre just helped more people learn about it and appreciate it.

@@ChocolateMuffin308 I agree that newer kpop fans can still be real fans. but I also agree with OP. I have been a kpop fan for about 10 years now, and kpop industry has changed so much in that time. The fanbase has grown ALOT, and changed for the worst. Back in the day, we used to just listen to the music and that was it. But nowadays we got all these fan wars, and Korean fetish people who are trying to look Asian. I swear it didn't used to be like that. So I kinda get what OP is saying, though I have honestly do not have a problem with new fans/celebrities liking Kpop and BTS. They are amazing, how could you not like them? But with the new fanbase comes a lot of terrible shit that wasn't there before. I think a lot of older fans are annoyed because they used to get bullied for liking kpop and the fans used to be a lot more chill before it blew up, and Asian people are annoyed because they used to get made fun of for their features, but now you got celebrities wanna look asian and trying to get in with BTS because it's cool now

The thing about everything with the recent "race fishing" bs is that we can't really even recognise certain races in people. See, as a romani (we originated from south Asia blah blah blah I'm too tired to explain our history) I've been told I look like every race under the rainbow or mixed. I always just said I'm white because yknow. Internalized shit I should probably see a therapist about or tell my current one.
But now that I'm open about this type of shit I get told I'm white because I don't "look" not white.
Not only do I have south Asian features I also have a bit of a darker skin tone that's ashy and typical in those who are POC yet don't go out in the sun much and live in dominatly cold weather without much sunlight.
For one, my eyes have the little slint, I have the little "bags" under them etc
But since those features were taken over by mostly white people, (example: cosplayers use makeup to make those features so they "fit the character more) it's not even recognised as a racial feature and so most people just say "that's not a race" which is so weird to me.
It's erasing so many cultures and ethnicities that's the problem in only recognising some parts of different races. (Example for Asia, if you're not either Japanese, Chinese or Korean you're not even considered Asian to some white people) Its pretty funny too because like, if you look at south asian people, Indian and even Filipino people who post about them being asian you'll see so many comments saying shit like "ur not asian ur Indian/Filipino". I guess its just weird how we came a full circle.

I think culture changes sometimes and has outside influence as it evolves, which is okay to an extent. Traditional culture should be respected and held to high integrity by its people because it’s what makes them unique. I think the biggest problem is trying to look like another race/ethnicity that you are not because that is what is currently popular. It is not okay to wear ethnicity/race like a fast fashion trend. Culture like music and clothing is not a big deal to me, but eye shape and skin color, etc. is just wrong and weird as hell.

If we are being honest, ALL of these aesthetics, and even the music, trace back to black folks and black culture. Kpop artists have been “borrowing” (stealing), black aesthetics and our way of living since it’s inception. Western artists are now taking from K-pop bc of its popularity. The entire machine (on both sides), is fueled by black culture. So yea this is really a vicious cycle of taking what is cool and popular and squeezing profit out of it.

Long story about my experience with k-pop in Hungary, and how I became a k-pop stan:
Although I was a casual k-pop listener before 2020, one of my classmates was an army in 2015. She showed me BTS and she was so obsessed with them- actually, she still is. She's quite loyal to them. But back then, she was told that she's weird for obsessing over Asian guys. It wasn't the worst thing though. My classmates back then were really friendly when it came to obsessions, mainly because everyone had one- those guys who told her that she's weird: they collected soccer cards.
I also remember that k-pop, mainly BTS was really popular back then here. It wasn't Dynamite, that got them Hungarian fans. In fact, I heard that they even said they want to come here- which would be amazing btw, I'd go for their concert for sure. But for BTS to acknowledge Hungary- it's an honor for sure, considering the size of this country.
I also remember that I was pretty updated with their MVs. They were huge here, as I said, so I got their MVs as recommended videos on RUclips. I wasn't even an army and I knew 60-70% of their songs back then because of this- and because of various other medias, like television.
I think they got big around the Love Yourself era here. The school radio even played some of their songs, and even though it was 2 years later, I heard Boy With Luv from the school radio first. They actually played it not long after the song came out.
However, BTS couldn't really get me into k-pop for some reason. BP couldn't do this either. But then I decided to watch Tower Of God at the beginning of 2020, because I was into anime for a year now at the time. I liked the opening, so I searched it up, and I was surprised that the group was Korean, because their Japanese was good (I don't know why I found it weird, I actually know now that Bang Chan can speak Japanese). Then in June, one of my friends (who hates k-pop) played God's Menu by Stray Kids in a Discord voice channel. (It's not like I made a screenshot, because he played it 2 days after the song's release, no) I was obsessed and still am obsessed with that song. It was so magical when I first listened to it. I'm not sure why, but I kinda wish I could listen to it again like that. The rabbithole started here for me, and now I'm very much into k-pop, I love the music, because I find it more interesting for the most part.
That's it basically. I can flex with that though- which I often do, I always tell that I know BTS since 2015, because that's true and a lot of people find it amazing :) aaaand it's also a quirk of mine that Stray Kids got me into k-pop :D It's very nice to be a k-pop stan here btw. Everyone is friendly, it's so surprising. There are also a lot of OG stans and stans who aren't OG, but know songs other than Dynamite and Butter. I haven't actually met anyone who said that they stan BTS and only know these two songs from them. Not to mention the amount of stays and atinys here. We can also buy albums quite easily, yes, for 30 USD, but they are there. It's funny, because the last time I went to a store where they have k-pop albums, TXT's albums weren't there- just the space where they were supposed to be, so people probably bought them all.
