I have wanted to get to something by Lisa See forever! Glad to hear you liked the writing so much, that can get me thru a lot of difficult content. All the dnfs 😂 I'm least surprised by the horror, but that premise I can see why you wanted to try it. The mental mojo is definitely low this year it seems, you are not alone. I hope your break goes well and you are able to come back refreshed.
I think you might like Lisa See's writing! I loved the historical setting in this one as well, so worth giving a try if it appeals to you. And I seriously have another four books or so that I started and found myself eyeing for DNFs, which made me realize I probably just needed a break. 😂 Now I'm reading some Ravens Dagger and rereading Network Effect with Sush - much more my current pace.
The sitcom star sounds very sweet and I like the idea of sitting back and learning to slow down -- I think I need to get better at being able to do that myself. I do like nonfiction reads as well but I do think it needs to be written well so that it doesn't feel dry and boring, but creating interest around the topic! I am glad you liked the premise of the pale house devil but sorry that it got too gory! I think I'm not the best for horror recommendations as graphic things don't bother me in the slightest 😅 Maybe I need to think of some soft horror recommendations that aren't too heavy handed on the gore. I hope you enjoy your break and comfort reading
The Sitcom Star was such a sweet read! I just read the sequel to it and loved it even more too. And I always know when picking up horror that I might need to DNF!😂 It just sounded so fun from your description that I wanted to give it a try in case I could manage it (so optimistic... 😅).
Jackie Lau has really been working for me! I just read the sequel novella to Sitcom Star, and it was 5 stars for me. The rest of March is just exhausting, but I'm surviving. 😅
It did have an interesting lens, just was a little too info-dumpy for us - doesn't mean it wouldn't work for others, though! I think you have a much higher tolerance for non-narrative nonfiction than I do, for example, so it might still really work for you.

Yay for another Jackie Lau hit! I hope you get some good rest and good reads in the rest of this month. How has March been going for you?
