That's So Poe

Hi everyone! My name is Shannon (pronouns: she/her), and this Booktube channel hosts my past discussions of books I've read. I no longer actively post, but please feel free to explore my old videos!
I read primarily fantasy and sci-fi, but also read across many other genres including romance, historical fiction, memoir, nature writing, poetry, history, and contemporaries. I especially like to focus on issues of social justice, immigration, identity, gender/sexuality, and disability. I read across all age ranges, but particularly love adult and middle grade. I am always looking to read more internationally published and translated works as well.
Feel free to connect with me on Goodreads:

Neat book! It's like the woman's Gulag Archipelago.
Thank you for this! I’ve been looking for a list of book tubers who share non-fiction and you solved my problem. So appreciated you 😊
@@textsandspecs I'm not sure if any of these booktubers are still making videos since this list is a bit old, but hopefully you still enjoy their backlist videos!
this book being assigned for homework for me made me dislike this book. I would've liked this book, but my school district decided to make this homework.
I just finished the series. I'd love to hear what you think about Ice & Ivy. I loved it! This is my favorite series right now.
@@DrGlynnWix Ice & Ivy was a bit mixed for me. I really loved the second half, but I struggled with the first half. The characters and their relationship in the first half didn't really work for me, but the plot and overarching storyline towards the end were so good.
Congrats!!! How does it feel months later? This is my goal as well which I believe I can achieve by end of 2025 (new releases are slowing me down, haha, though my owned tbr is under 50) I LOVE the idea of just borrowing or buying a book to read immediately with no guilt from ignoring my backlog.
@@rockyjreads It feels great! I'm a mood reader at heart, so to not be weighed down by things I've bought that I'm no longer in the mood for is great. I haven't kept my TBR fully at zero, but it's close - maybe 3 books or so I've bought this year that I haven't yet read, but I have plans to soon.
Nice
Superb review...the series is truly exceptional..
I'm from Brazil, I've loved books since I was a child and I'm studying English by myself by reading children's books. I love your channel because it has close captions, so I can read what you say (at 0.75 speed, lol). Even if you don't make videos for BookTube anymore, I'll keep watching your old videos because you read very interesting books. Good luck for you in your new life! 🤩🤩
@@lilith230-c7j I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos and that the captions are helping! I've read lots of children's books and middle grade books that I've absolutely loved, so I hope you find some recommendations for books that you can try to read in English.
I need to do a TBR Zero project. It will take a while! I have decided not to do a book challenge with specific prompts next year, because I can't seem to read the many physical and e-books that I own. I would also like to get to the point of reading more library books.
@@joycejarrard6958 It took me quite a few years to get to TBR zero - it's a big project! I think it's hard to balance all the reading projects and library books you want to read and also get to all your owned books, so it makes sense to focus on owned books for a bit if you want to bring your TBR down. It's been really nice to be at TBR zero this year since now I feel completely free to borrow whatever I want from the library.
Wow. Time flies. It is good to hear that you had such good experiences. And i wish you all the best for the future! It was kind of lonely in the german booktube space because it is small and people read different books. But i got to talk to some great german authors. So i plan on starting doing Videos again after i finished uni in october or so.
@@NurChaos Time really does fly! I'm glad you got to talk to some German authors - that's such a neat experience. Hopefully more people will join the German booktube space in the future and that gets expanded. It's always nice to run into others who read things that interest you. Good luck finishing up uni and making videos again!
Video straight to the point. 👍
I m halfway through the 4 th book, and l now know what the fox means on the covers.
Interesting story premises and ideas, but the story-telling itself is dry. Dreadfully dry. The Life-Cycle of Software Objects has a whole wealth of ideas, but is as interesting and engaging to read as the title would indicate.
I love this book. Not to alert any spoilers, but the fact that all Aziza wished was for forgiveness made me weep.
It's such a fantastic book! All the storylines were so gripping.
im so glad i found you on booktube!! its been lovely to see what you've been reading and enjoying for the past years & i hope whatever else you do with your time is as wonderful as it has been to connect w u here !! <3 <3
Same! It's been a lot of fun to see all the interesting things you pick up and chat with you about what we're reading. 🥰
Doing booktube for so long it's a natural thing that we change our perspectives and focus on different hobbies and passions in life. It's been good to know you and meet you and Sush in Dublin. I don't want to lose touch and hope to still meetup with the two of you somewhere again.
Thanks, Joe! We had such a good time with you in Dublin. Such good memories! 🥰
What melody is plaed in the end?
Gymnopédie (I think No. 1) by Erik Satie.
@@ThatsSoPoe Thank You!
Nooooooooooooooooo! How will I do Hugo season without yours and Sush's review's of the books and stories? That is what brought me to your channel and what I will remember most. I was going to say I will have to rely on Kristenelle now, but I am behind the times with her. She;s aleady gone and just stops by to say hi. Your channel was the very first one I subbed to and I will miss you. Not all the folks whose videos I have commented on have replied and I have enjoyed our exchanges. I have recognized the landscape in some of your walks outside and I think we live nearish to each other. I hope if I should see you out and about some day that you won't be startled if I greet you by name and say hi.
Aww! Good luck with Hugo season! Truthfully, you wouldn't have been able to get that from my channel this year anyway - we decided not to read or follow the Hugos anymore since we've been a bit uninspired by the shortlist for the past few years and find it's more frustrating than fun to read it at this point for us. And I miss Kristen's videos too! I'm very glad you comment on my videos, btw - it's my favorite part and it always makes me happy to see your name pop up in a comment. Also, if you think we live near each other, we should meet up for coffee or something! Just send me a message on Goodreads and we can chat.
@@ThatsSoPoe Hi. I did attempt to message you at Goodreads and I got a message that said "Sorry, this person isn't accepting messages."
@@sphinxinherhat Oh, sorry about that! I looked at my settings and I had it so that only friends could message me. Can you try again? Or friend request me and I can message you.
@@sphinxinherhat So I saw your message on Goodreads, but when I went to reply, it says you're not accepting messages! 😂 I've sent you a friend request, so hopefully if you accept that it'll allow me to respond to your message.
Life has so many seasons. We never know where the road will take us. I am grateful for your positivity! ❤️❤️
Thanks, Wendy! ☺️ Looking forward to seeing what is next in life.
Hey Shannon, I will very much miss your upbeat and positive presence here! But please don't be a stranger. I hope you stick around at least to say hi once in a while and let your old friends know you're doing okay. These personal connections are worth more than their weight in gold! 😊
Thanks! And thanks for your friendship over the years as well. It's been such a wonderful experience to get connected to so many great people through Booktube!😊
Hi Shannon. This is a bittersweet video and I'm glad I manage to catch it as I'm only "returning" to booktube watching this week (the semester's coming to an end). I think it's always wonderful to look back how the experience changed you. In any case, excited to meeting ya soon!!
It is a bit bittersweet! Glad you're getting enough space in your schedule to fit in some Booktube watching. Grad school can be rough. Looking forward very much to hanging out once you're done with the term!! Even if I won't be posting anymore, it's been fantastic being part of the Booktube community and meeting friends like you. 😊
❤ My booktube crowd was from 2010, and I also felt like stop making videos myself. It's great to have followed you through your years here 😊
Yeah, it's just hard when so many of the channels you love are no longer around! I've tried to go out and make new Booktube friends, but then so many of those have since left Booktube too. I'm glad I met everyone I have, though. Definitely worth it!
What a lovely way to look back and appreciate the experience. This feels like such an end of an era, even knowing this was coming and knowing we'll still be in touch & I'll be all over your Goodreads 😄 5 years is a real commitment in anything, you really enriched the community over that time. I'm just so happy it connected us. I do selfishly hope you feel like coming back sometime, but this reflection feels like a perfect end cap.
Thanks, Becca! Booktube has been amazing for meeting so many people, and I definitely value the friendships so much. I'm very lucky that we'll continue buddy reading and chatting outside of Booktube as well! I'm still very much looking forward to watching your videos and hearing about what you've been reading since my TBR is so heavily influenced by your recs. 🥰
Loved your content, especially the ones with you and Sush. Stay happy 😀
Thanks!! I loved doing videos with Sush too. Sush and I have been doing a ton of reading out loud to each other recently, which has been awesome even if we haven't filmed much together in the past year or so (he got a little tired of filming too 😂)
Aw so sad to see this but I understand. I really enjoyed your videos as I’ve gotten some great recommendations from you, with many being books I didn’t see anyone else talking about. And I love reading underhyped stuff! You’ve also inspired me to DNF more, which has helped my reading tremendously! I wish you the best and hope you enjoy all the extra time you will have ❤
I'm so glad you've gotten some good book recs from me! I've gotten them from you too. I'm going to try to be better about posting on Goodreads, so hopefully you'll still be able to see some recs from me in the future. And yay for more DNFing! It really does make reading so much enjoyable to just let go of things that aren't working for you. And thanks!
Oh, going to miss your reviews and channel a lot! It’s been lovely getting to know you and your channel more over time, and I hope you continue to enjoy reading and your other hobbies / endeavours as well ❤ these are some lovely memories and moments to end on x
Thanks! I've really loved getting to know you through Booktube too - and I'm glad you're still posting! You always have the best recommendations. I'll keep commenting on your videos and let you know if I run into any books I think you'd particularly like!
Thank you for all the great recs and videos, Shannon. Wishing you all the best!
Thanks! And thanks for all the lovely comments as well - seeing your name pop up always made me smile. 🥰
I will miss you. Really enjoyed your reviews. Thanks for all the videos.
Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed the reviews. I loved sharing my thoughts on everything I read!
Aaaaahhhh I'll miss seeing you on here. Thanks for the memories (and the wonderful books you brought to my attention; my TBR thanks you!) and see you on Goodreads ❤
Thanks! And glad some of the books I've talked about made it to your TBR! 😊
☹️
Aww! 🥰
I'm glad that you had such a good experience with your time with book tube! I know that you have taught me to dnf more, and you also helped me be better about using my library! Thank you!
And thanks for your support over the years and all the discussions on books! I always love talking to you about the latest thing I'm reading and trying to convince you to pick it up too. 😁 And yay for more DNFing and library usage!
Aww Shannon! I'm going to miss you on here so much, and watching this feels bittersweet. The books I've buddy read with you are some of my favorite booktube moments! I'm grateful for those and have loved hearing your thoughtful reviews over the years ❤
Same! Buddy reading with you has been such a great part of Booktube for me! It's been so meaningful to have that connection. I'll still be watching your videos and commenting, though, and I'm happy to do buddy reads any time you like even if I'm not posting anymore. 😊
I will certainly miss your content, but I'm glad that you're making this decision for yourself. Wishing you all the best! 💜
Thanks, and thanks for all the comments over the years! 🥰
This is the kind of reflective video I wish I'd made a year ago when I stepped away from Booktube as well. For very much the same reasons as you - life changes, new hobbies emerge, want to spend time on other things... I am so grateful I got to meet you through Booktube, to see you in person in Dublin, to buddy read awesome books with you. Friends are the biggest, best thing I got from Booktube, and you are one of them!!
Same! Thanks for including us in the Dublin group - it was so special to meet you all. And thanks for all the buddy reads over the years! Really a highlight of my time on Booktube. 🥰 And yeah, I feel like so many of us have gone through the same process of drifting away from Booktube as life priorities change - I feel like maybe 80% of my Booktube friends have left, which definitely has impacted my engagement in the community over time as well. Just life moves on!
I did not expect to have my heart broken on a Tuesday morning. Shannon I'll miss you so much! I can understand life taking new directions. I hope i get to see you either in videos on real life again. You were one of my favourite Dublin highlights! Ahhh I'm so sad. Sending many many many hugs
Awww! 🥰 So sweet. You were one of my favorite Dublin highlights too! And thanks for the hugs. 💕
Going to miss you in my feed but totally get it 💜💜💜
Thanks, Angela! 🥰 I'll still be watching your videos and commenting, and we'll chat on Voxer, so looking forward to staying connected even if I'm not posting myself anymore.
How to keep house while drowning could be something I should read right now, as a primary carer and more or less the one who runs the house because of that, it's a lot to balance sometimes! And the drowning feeling can feel real 😅 I'm going to see if my library has a copy today. Yay for fun rereads.
I hope your library has a copy! It's such a short book, and just has such good ideas.
I just finished The Moth Keeper. I absolutely adored the art and the colour palette in this one. I agree with you in that I would have liked a little more from the story itself. If it had been from a different artist whose art I didn't enjoy as much, it would have felt more drawn out. But I wasn't disappointed in having so many frames and pages without further dialogue and story because it meant I got to look at more and more of her artwork. I've been to Cappadocia in Turkey and the landscape in the book looks like it was hugely inspired by Cappadocia.
The artwork really was stunning! That's neat that the landscape looks like it was inspired by Cappadocia. I've never heard of that region, but it must be beautiful.
Yay for some lovely rereading! That sounds like a good idea to hit the spot. A bit of a bummer about Alebrijes. 😔 I do still want to give it a try, but I'll temper my expectations. Is it set in kind of the same universe as Last Cuentista?
Yes, I believe it's in the same La Cuentista universe. You might still really enjoy it! My reading mood has been so iffy that I don't trust it at all. 😂
Aw disappointed to hear about Alebrijes, but I’m glad you had so many great reads!
Yeah, I was sad about Alebrijes too, but very likely it's just my weird reading mood right now, so hopefully other people will really enjoy it. I'm just focusing on reading what's calling to me and letting go of any grander reading plans for the moment! 😅
Always good to reread a favourite! While I have read uprooted before, I have never tried reading spinning silver. So many of my historical romance reader friends have been loving georgette heyer's books and now I am wondering if I need to try one too...
Uprooted was great too, but Spinning Silver really has my heart. Georgette Heyer is just so much fun, so I really recommend her work!
Is there one of her books you’d recommend starting with ?
@@OliviasCatastrophe There are so many great ones! I'd say my all-time favorites are Frederica, Venetia, Black Sheep, These Old Shades, and Arabella. If any of those is easily available to you, I'd say give it a try. They are often more comedy and ridiculous characters than romance, but such fun reads.
I keep meaning to get to at least one Georgette Heyer. I took Venetia out of the library and didn't read it before the due date. Is there one you recommend starting with?
Venetia is one of my favorites, actually! I also really love Black Sheep and Frederica. There's pretty much no order to reading her books, so whatever you start with is fine.
Way to go! You really showed determination to meet that goal and even do your ebooks. I am focusing in 2024 on selective unhauling any books that I don't absolutely love because I have reached the point of having too many now that I moved to a smaller home and now share it with another reader. In the process, I am unhauling into my new Little Free Library. I haven't stopped buying, but for every book I buy, I do unhaul one. As of May 15, I've unhauled 155 of my owned TBR books; some of them I did read as part of the 75 books I have read so far this year. And I pulled out 30 more (so far) to go into my LFL over next month as space opens up in it. I am not counting my owned ebooks in this project nor my nonfiction reference books. It's not that I want a Zero TBR, but that I want to look at the shelves and feel joy. I am having fun as a LFL steward and getting to share my books with neighbors.
Thanks! Your project sounds great as well. I also didn't count any reference books or my husband's books, etc, since those really aren't things I'm planning to read. I did a bunch of unhauling too, both of read and unread books. We actually go through our books each year to do an unhaul of anything we no longer care to keep to make room for our new favorites. We feel the same about wanting to be surrounded by books that make us happy! And I think if your goal is focused on the shelf space you have, not counting ebooks makes total sense.
Congratulations! What an amazing achievement, and sooo motivating since I have recently tried to get to TBR 0 myself and am documenting my journey
Good luck with reaching TBR zero! I've been really enjoying feeling free from obligation to read my backlist, so I think it's been very worthwhile.
@@ThatsSoPoe thank you!! I am definitely looking forward to it, I didn’t realise how much stress the tbr pile up has been adding to my life
I’m glad you liked the Worth Saga! I still need to read Her Every Wish, so I’m glad it’s also good! The River Bank sounds really good! Though it’s funny the cover blends into your background so well that at first I was wondering why you made the cover (the blue and red part) so small 😂 Glad to hear it’s slowing down for you a bit! Your RUclips plans sound perfect for this season of your life :)
I noticed that about the cover of The River Bank when I was editing too!😂 Not surprising that the book worked so well for us given how much it fits our vibe. We're now reading The Wind in the Willows since we figured we might as well go back to the source material too. And yeah, I'm feeling good about my plan - just take it easy and focus on enjoying my reading.
I just got the bear and the nightingale by katherine arden so I am looking forward to trying her writing and seeing whether I want to try more of her books afterwards! Glad you liked warm hands of ghosts. I do like gothic books. You did so good with reading your way through the Courtney Milan series. Oh, I didn't realise part of your world was a series and that just for the summer was connected to that, so thank you for passing on that essential information! It's good to know so I don't accidentally read them out of order (although it doesn't sound like you strictly need to). Lots of romance here ^.^ Oh yes, I have heard that silver nitrate is more horror than gothic, and she does seem to switch between the gothic and horror with her genres. Do things at your pace and keep booktube fun x
The Bear and the Nightingale is so good too! I hope you enjoy it. I'm still working on the Courtney Milan series (got distracted by some other things), but hopefully I'll finish it soon. And I think it would be good to read Part of Your World before Yours for the Summer, even though they're companion novels, since lots of characters from the first book are important in that third one.
good to see u back !! i know u dnfed it but i have put silver nitrate on my tbr haha from hearing about it ! the warm hands of ghosts sounds rly good also !! i think your plan sounds great, i hope you can continue to just do the enjoyable parts of booktube for you !! 💕💕 oh also i would love to know if u like the book the house of rust by khadija abdalla bajaber ? i just read it and i think ~ u would enjoy it :)
If you pick up Silver Nitrate, I hope you enjoy it! I think you might like The Warm Hands of Ghosts - definitely one of my favorites of the year. And I haven't read The House of Rust, but it's one I've been wanting to get to - I'll have to bump it up my TBR!
💖 I'm so glad you're feeling a bit back to normal as well! I really need to get to the malka older series now that I am back to librarying, sooon! Have also been missing romance, It has fallen out of rotation this year a bit, but Courtney Milan will be up on the list when I have time since you've sold me!
Yeah, I'm starting to have more energy for reading! Still pretty much just interested in SFF and romance, but at least a little more broad than only the coziest of cozies. Definitely give The Devil Comes Courting a try! Super good.
I LOVED The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles. My only complaint is that I can never remember the title when I try to recommend it. Did you pick up on the scene where Mossa wants to go to the opera and see Infomocracy, and Pleiti complains that the book was better? (Infomocracy was written by Malka Older.) I've started reading the third book in the trilogy that started with Infomocracy. It's a political espionage story, set in the near future, heavy with world building, very different from Mossa and Pleiti's story.
I keep struggling to remember the title correctly too! 😂 And yes, I caught the Infomocracy opera reference. I read the series a while back and it's got such cool world building.
Finally have just for the summer from the library!!
Glad it came in! Hope you enjoy it and it's just as engrossing for you as it was for me.
