Bass Drum Hoops: Wood vs Metal - Can you hear a difference?

  • How much of a difference does the material of your bass drum hoop make to the sound? In this video I pit metal hoops against wooden ones to see if you can hear a significant difference.
I recently tried out using some metal bass drum hoops as a substitute for my wooden ones that had slightly warped in storage. If you're checking out hoops to replace on your drums, it's worth noting that it maybe a slightly different sound on a wooden shell compared to the acrylic shell used in this video. The bass drum was mic'd up using an Audix D6.
What do you think of the results? Can you hear a difference? What types of hoops have you tried out? Let me know in the comments.

I have metal hoops on my early 70's 20x14" Rogers Powertone kick, and it sounds thunderous! I don't know if the hoops have anything to do with it, but they certainly don't hurt the tone of that drum.

I definitely like the sound of your kit with the wood hoops better... but I also wonder if it matters once there is a pillow or any dampening. Looks wise, though, the metal with the white band looks killer on that clear drum. WAY better than the wood ones.

I hear a warmer rounded , sound w the wood hoops and a bit more punchy mid range sound of the aluminum hoops.

On toms and snares the difference is noticeable, on bass drums... not so much. I have a Catalina Club Jazz kit, bass drum hoops are wood, painted black with the wrap inlay. Switched to chrome metal hoops. Just re-used the inlays on the chrome hoops. The kit looks so much more beautiful and vintage with the chrome hoops. Sound wise a tiny bit more reverb with the metal hoops is great! I play swing jazz, so a bit more overtones are welcome. Think on my large kit which I use for most of the backbeat oriented stuff, I do prefer wooden hoops, but on a 18" bass drum for Jazz? The metal ones are great!

those 80s exports are brilliant actually, have you got the ones with the long lugs? still one of the deepest, hugest kick drums i've heard

Yes, through YT audio compression playing through my first Gen. IPad Pro 12inch tablet’s speaker system, the wood hoops have more punch; however, metal is more balanced and airy. Whatever that means…

I think the metal ones look better, the white matches the white in the DW drum badge. As far as sound, the wood had more midrange, but tuning can make the metal ones sound the same.

Through my phone speakers, the metal sounds duller. I dig the look though!

Those metal hoops remind me of white wall tires on vintage cars.

I tune so low, I wouldn't hear any difference. I prefer a natural wood look, so wood is my choice.

your bass hoops were probably faulty to start and just got worse because if they were one of their earlier batches into the UK of their acrylic kits because DW replaced both of mine being slightly made oversized they even sent me 2 brand-new bass drum heads too plus new badges because they were especially for the wood kits. I Just thought I’d mention it when I came across this video

God dammit! I didn’t know this. Thanks for the heads up though. Have you got the same acrylic design series?

@@WillDrumsDaly you’re welcome it was just a thought . No Will I sold mine in 2016 as I needed to downsize. but if DW ever produced a 20 inch bass version I’d certainly buy another.
