I'm long term listener. I love this project immensely. I missed the war, I was too young. I salute every veteran with my whole heart. From my perspective, what I've learned, a bit from other participants in the war, is a very cynical perspective as follows, "every war is a bankers war". The money made was a significant incentive for the war. The sacrifices made for those profits is the real tragedy. Saving others from communism is a good motive, but too brass is suspect. Every vet interviewed keeps politics out of it. Gracefully. But I can't help but feel the pain and tragedy of every serviceman, service woman who put their lives on the line, physically and mentally. God bless all.
Saw all these interviews,, what a legend this guy is,, Cool, Calm,Collected,, very impressive man,, i wish my father was as wise and cool as this guy. what a great soldier and no loss of memory here. Thanks Les i watched it 4 times allready, Steve Driver Sydney Australia your welcome here anytime. Thanks Les your a Loyal Honest man.
I'm a peacetime Marine vet & thoroughly enjoyed this soldier's account of Vietnam. He is a true patriot and I thank him for all He's done for this country. He's a carpenter. That's funny, I'm an electrician. We do have a few things in common.
My Army battle buddy (bunk mate) is from Vietnam, so I have a slight connection to that country. These Vietnam veterans (1965-1970), like Les Mattern, are the very finest, most devoted men and nurses this nation ever produced. They are truly MMMMMAGNIFICENT, an unsung NATIONAL TREASURE for their DEVOTION and COURAGE. THESE Vietnam vets are OUR FINEST GENERATION. There is no doubt in my mind. Respectfully, Mike Hart-Jones, US Army, 1992
Why can't we have world leaders like les, we seem to get stuck with career look at me types... and family getting other family members on government gravy trains.
This Man - JFC. So humble and empathetic of both friends and foes. And his tribute to the soldiers in WWII and Korea. Wow. Now this man should have run for public office
Believe me Les, they will be remembered. To me Vietnam and all the men who fought there, had just as much honor and the will to see the task complete as ww2 or Korea.
Father Steve tommy where are you thinking about your son now huuuu father I'm live with our your but I'm Love you i want to see you again daddy where are My family huhuui father Steve tommy I'm no are you still a life some where
What was the strategic purpose of all these fire bases and running around setting up ambushes in the jungle if we had no plan to destroy the government of North Vietnam?
The goal was to prop up the state of South Vietnam, as a self sustaining, capitalist nation. Rather than to destroy North Vietnam. South Vietnam - the Republic of Vietnam - was supposed to be a South East Asian bulwark against communism, in accordance with the domino theory. It might seem naive or foolish now, in retrospect. But then again, hindsight is always 20:20.

Loved his closing comment. " I've earned my way." I agree and I hope all these Vets feel they earned their way.
What a impressive, wise man with a simple perspective on a complex war & time.
Les Mattern, thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
