This is good to know. I just got some banana tree pups from my neighbor yesterday and one of the pups didn't have roots. Instinctively I put it in some water so hopefully I will get some roots soon. 😊
@angeldominguez5952 Hey, how are you? The pup that I put in water didn't sprout any roots. It ended up getting waterlogged and dying. Now the one I put in the ground...OMG!! It is huge. I started with 1 plant, and now I have about 9 plants ranging in heights from 3ft to 10ft tall.😊
300TV - I just moved to north Atlanta near you and will be planting some here as well. Stay tuned for some updates and we can winterize them together to see if we can keep them alive.
My tree made bananas this year but was very unhappy because I never fertilized it. I’m new at growing bananas. It produced a few rows of bananas and the rest keep falling off as the flower blooms. My question is, the pups need to be cut off because it’s going to get cold here in NJ, do I put the pups in soil for the winter indoors
I'm planting mine today, a ladyfingers banana tree, so your video has given me confidence, especially to cut off a damaged leaf on the plant. I'm in Australia, so should I plant 8n full sun or part shade? Cheers.
I have 2 pots of banana plants right now. I'm thinking to plant them on this weekend. My question is would they grow back up after winter is over? Thanks
better only half x half feet is good and enough, if goes deeper than will spend most of its energy in producing more sucker shots than concentrate on fruit production and cause delayed fruit production
I live in LA, CA I got some red banana leafs in pot each 5 “ long from Home Depot. I put them in 25’ deep holes in my garden but after a few days the plants started to losing theirs leafs and get yellow!!! What did I wrong? what can I do to save them?
Make sure they have good drainage and are getting enough water. Sometimes this happens right after planting if they had not been in full sun prior to planting
I have so many questions! I wish I knew a way I could email you and send you some photos of mine. I live in western North Carolina but mine never get super big. I grow them not for the plants but for the look of the plant. Others in the same ares have huge trees in big bunches but I can not get mine to do like that. I ask people what they do and they always say nothing. But just joined your channel so hope I can get some ideas. Soil here is red and clay like for the most part. Have had mine for over 10 years but never get huge or bunch up like others I see. Perhaps I need to put manure on them each spring.
Do you mean the water line that goes to the washing machine? If so, yes. But I would not use water that has been mixed with soap to water the banana plants. I do not think that would go well and could actually hurt them
You can, but they are very acidic, so just do a light sprinkle. It would be more of a replacement for fertilizer than a replacement of cow manure. You can replace the cow manure with any form of carbon based mass. Wood ashes are a great alternative. But using just regular soil is fine too, even plain dirt from outside. You can always sprinkle in some coffee grounds no matter what you use
Hey Greg, you can do a few things. Here in Savannah it does not take much to keep them alive as it rarely goes below freezing. But you can put christmas lights on them to give a little warmth, heat tape, or even wrap in bubble wrap. They just need to stay above freezing
Where are you located in Georgia? Am trying to grow dwarf bananas in my greenhouse ..but would love to put them in the ground...in Atlanta...and still get edible fruit.. .
Hi Debra - I am in Sandy springs. You should get a veinte cohol banana. It’s the fastest fruiting. If you check my update videos, you can see it’s grown like wildfire. And it’s a dwarf. If you grow this in a pot over winter indoors or a greenhouse and plant outside after the last frost, you will get bananas by fall!
Well spring gardens is where I ordered mine from. Also happy to meet up and give you a pup once it shoots one out later this summer. Still no sign of pups yet though
Hi Neighbor. Always nice to meet another gardener who is close by. I would love a pup.... what doed the Viente Cohol banana taste like? I am trying to grow dwarf Cavendish by they need 13 -15 months and our winters make that a challenge.
Hey Lockedand Loaded Signs, this number is on the higher range, but it can vary. Some dwarf varieties can flower as low as 30 leaves and some taller varieties, over 42. Even the same banana plant can flower at a different amount of leaves year after year
Depending on region you are located in, you can plant year round. Just after the last frost in spring is best time if you live somewhere that gets below freezing. This gives you the most time possible before winter
@@marcificht4013 biggest pot you can get! I grew my dwarf namwah in a 16 gallon pot over the winter and it did great. Got to about 4 feet tall before I put it in the ground. If you could get a 25 gallon pot, you can definitely get it to fruit. I actually just got in a veinte cohol in the mail that I will be posting a video on about how to grow in a pot. It's on the bigger side, so I'd suggest growing an even more dwarf variety though. Dwarf namwah or double mahoi would be good ideas. Maybe even a truly tiny, but they are hard to get to fruit
So if I plant one and you see your gray fence if I had like a brick wall that distance away with a banana tree still be all right to have its root grow under it? Or spread further away? How much distance does a dwarf banana 🍌 tree actually need?
Yep that’s no issue, the roots will grow in the opposite direction. Just as long as the wall isn’t blocking all the sunlight. Must have at least 6 hours of direct sun
The conditions aren't ideal, but they will continue to grow. The plants themselves will be a lot thinner and they will take longer to produce fruit. Aside from that, more care may be needed regarding pest/fungal outbreaks.

If a banana tree has broken in half, can the top half be saved?
W0W!
Plant spacing should be at least 75% of the plant maximum height to prevent competition and increase development.
I’ve seen pretty good success with closer spacing, but agree your method is helpful for large commercial growing to maximize crops

Okay but how did you get to this point how did you actually plant the seed and grow the plant that's the part I'm looking for
Banana plants do not grow from seed. They propagate from offshoots called pups. So you need to get one of these from a mother plant to start your own.
