I’m going to be busy making me some beads tomorrow....acrylic, hardwood, bone...new use for my brass tubing cutoffs too. Just wish it wasn’t 120F in the garage during the day...lol
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my video, I really appreciate it. Thanks for sharing it and posting the link. I have done another video showing how to turn bumblebee light pulls on a pen mandrel. All the best, Jim
Thanks, glad you like it. Using the pen mandrel like this is a good way of using up scrap bits of wood, something you and Scrapy know all about. All the best, Jim
Those came out awesome. :) I want to do that when I get my lathe. I will probably make a lot of my own custom blanks using resin and different inclusions more than buying blanks that were already made. - Heidi
Hello Sir Jim from deep down sunny South Africa First time viewer of Your channel. Very nice n beautifully finished beads for Your Lanyard Would like to see some of Your Knives though Thanks for showing and sharing ATB aRM
Thank you very much. I will hopefully be making some more knife videos soon when I get some more time. I have some Puronvarsi blanks and some curly birch that I am keen to build. All the best, Jim
Could you please clarify something for me: Did you use slow setting epoxy to stick the brass pen tube to the wood or did you use two different materials?
Thanks Geoffrey. The pen mandrel is Planet and I purchased the mandrel saver separately ( also Planet ) but they are well worth getting and mean that you can apply a lot more pressure with the tailstock so there is much less vibration due to the mandrel distorting or wobbling. It is also much quicker to set up with a mandrel saver, no brass nuts to tighten or lose on the floor. I purchased mine from John Davis Woodturning in Stockbridge. Cheers, Jim
JIm, really like your pen mandrel work and the use of Milliput in your pieces. Where did you source your two Morse taper pen mandrel and your zero chuck with nthe rounded edges? Can't see to locate them in the usual turning supplies stores. Thanks, John from Hawaii
Thanks John, glad you like what I do. The chuck jaws and the pen mandrel came from a Woodturning shop here in England UK called John Davis Woodturning johndaviswoodturning.com/ All the best, Jim
Nice one Jim,i've been meaning to make a load of wooden and antler and acrylic beads for a couple of years now, just never got round to it,I must put it back on my to do list lol,i love irish bog oak,i have a load of it,some carbon dated to 3500bc... and my largest log is 6 foot long by 20" wide lol I use turtle wax on my acrylics,it's a lot cheaper :o) Atb
+Jimson's Stuff amazing is how it is :) ive finally got around to mounting it properly to the bench so it doesn't try to wander when rough turning something a bit too far out of balance, the bench is a tiny bit away from the wall now aswel so any wobble doesnt also shake the shed lmao
+Mark Hobster . The forces generated by out of balance wood are quite incredible ! The lathe is so heavy that it is difficult to lift but even a relatively small blank can have it jumping around if out of balance. Cheers, Jim
+Jimson's Stuff yeah it is incredible, I've got a few bowls made now but no instructional vids made as I don't feel I'm good enough yet, ill have to start uploading some pics to google+
I have a little piece of awkwardly-shaped bog oak that I was wondering about. Didn't want to waste it. This is the idea I needed. Thanks.
Thank you very much for watching Gary, yes beads are a good way of using small offcuts
Cheers
Jim
Fantastic. I've asked several RUclips turners the best what to do this to no answer. You nailed it. Thank you.
Thank you very much, glad to be of help. Cheers, Jim
That is a brilliant tip about the Yorkshire Grit. I have burned so many acrylic pieces with sand paper.
Thanks Robert, it seems to work well. Cheers, Jim
That bog oak looks amazing
I was amazed how good a finish I could achieve, it is very hard, so it polishes well. I love the colour tones in the grain. Cheers, Jim
I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you very much Jennifer, much appreciated.
Cheers
Jim
Lindo! parabéns 😊. Qual é o tipo q vc passou um produto nas bolinhas?
Thank you so much Jim for another great video. Your ideas have inspired me a great deal and have pushed me onto trying to be more artistic.

Many thanks for watching . Good luck with the beads
@@JimsonMakes did you cut the blanks with the pen tube glued inside them on the bandsaw? does the tube cut cleanly that way?
@@johnhickerson1699 I glued the brass tubes into the blanks with epoxy, I roughened them first. They cut very well on the bandsaw.
Good work, that's a great project. Looking forward to new videos.... Thanks.
Thank you very much, more videos coming soon. Cheers, Jim
Nice! Learned some new tricks :)

Thanks Ian, I've used my pen mandrel for lots of things but not pens ! Cheers, Jim

I wonder if you could use acorns without them breaking
probably not unless they were dried and impregnated with resin, many thanks for watching
@@JimsonMakes yea that's what i figured
Could you please clarify something for me: Did you use slow setting epoxy to stick the brass pen tube to the wood or did you use two different materials?
It was a long time ago but I think I would have used a slow set epoxy
@@JimsonMakes Thanks for the response!
Can we get a picture of the beads with the knife? Awesome work!
Thank you, I will show the complete knife with lanyard and beads when I make the leather sheath video. Cheers, Jim
Cheers!
A great project Jim what make pen mandrel do you use , presumably the end support comes separate the one I was looking at was the planet one.

Thanks Scott. That bog oak sounds good. Have you had a look at my knife making video yet ? Perhaps I will try some turtle wax. Cheers, Jim
I havn't yet Jim but i will do
Any info on that jam Chuck used to sand bead ends?
From memory I think I just used a short, tapered dowel held in a chuck and pushed the bead onto that
Ok, for those of us who are spatially challenged, the beads start out at what 3/4 inch or 1 inch? Once again Sir, very AWESOME Video....
Thank you very much. They started at approx 3/4 inch. Cheers, Jim
How long do you cut your blanks
Initially I cut them to the length of the brass tube insert, and then roughly to the diameter of the bead ( if I remember correctly )
Wow!
Thank you very much Irene
Cheers
Jim
The Irish Bog Oak is beautiful when finished. Do you know of an outlet to purchase some of it?
Hi Tom, the piece I have was a gift but it does appear on eBay occasionally. Cheers, Jim
Thank you Jim, I will keep an eye out for it on eBay.
simplesmente perfeito!
Obrigado. Jim
They log nice
Thank you Richard. Cheers, Jim

you have just proven that there is no such thing as scrap wood or scrap acrylic only wasted if thrown away ;)
