  • Paarthurnax' speech about trusting a Dovah
ATTENTION !!! TESV 5 SKYRIM SPOILERS BELOW !!!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
After signing the peace treaty in "Season Unending" Esbern tells you that Paarthurnax was one of the chief allies of Alduin during the ancient dragon war. He and Delphine insist that you kill Paarthurnax, as he cannot be trusted.
When you go up to the Throat of the World to speak with Paarthurnax, the following dialog unfolds.
Though Paarthurnax' speech is short, in my view these are some of the most remarkable words ever to be spoken in a computer game.

@@chrisironland7050 I mean, I'm pretty sure those are just game mechanics and the devs didn't think too hard about what would happen in these different scenarios, but it does make sense for her character. She acts out of paranoia and self-preservation (which may be justified, considering she's been on the run from the Thalmor for decades), seeing the Dragonborn as a chance to return to glory. Give Esbern credit, he's the Blade who wants to stop Alduin because it's the end of the world.

Paarthurnax was literally created to spread evil and chaos. It was supposed to be his purpose and the reason for his existence. But he overcame his nature and went against his own kin for the good rest of the world. He changed himself.
Meanwhile the blades' intentions were noble but they were a pale shadow of what they used to be. They were created to protect the world from dragons. But they lost sight of their objective. They became dragon hunters and didn't realise that they didn't need to kill every dovah. So much so that they refused to help the dragonborn in his quest. This means that they cared more about their hatred of dragons and their biases than they did about the fate of the world.
And that's why in my opinion, paarthurnax is much better than the blades. He just wants peace. Blades want eradication of dragons and more than they want peace.

Paarthurnax did exactly what he was made to do, spread evil and chaos, as you say. Just not from the perspective of all races. He did well to overthrow Dragons and help Humans and Elves to end their tyranny. His words are true, never trust a Dovah. Kill them all or they will kill you. Few of them are good and helpful, but after their rolls are done and they can't help you in any other way, Dragonborn should kill them and absorb their Souls to prevent any future wars and disasters caused by Dragons. Last Dragonborn is meant to end the world of Dragons as is Alduin to end the world of Men and Mer.

The demand that the Blades make to you shows that they do not understand what you are. Even Esbern, a scholar who understands more about the ancient history of the dragons and Dragonborn than just pretty much any human alive (aside from Miraak, of course) doesn't understand your nature. To Delphine you are simply a weapon, a blade to be pointed at dragons. She claims that the Blades serve the Dragonborn, but she doesn't actually believe it.
To be a Dovahkiin is to truly have the soul of a dragon. To be Dovahkiin is to have the same will to dominate that all dragons have. The Dragonborn must struggle with his or her nature just as Paarthurnax has, as the dragon points out. In game you can resist or give in as you see fit, but the struggle is there regardless.
A wolf isn't blamed for obeying its nature. That doesn't mean you will let it attack your flock of sheep, but it is only doing what it was made to do. Dragons are only doing what they were made to do, and long ago Paarthurnax was no different. But now he IS different. He has struggled for thousands of years against his nature, he has become something better. He taught humanity the Way of the Voice, helping them to fight back against his own kind. He teaches the Dragonborn what is necessary to battle Alduin and save the world *and* the souls of mortals after they die.
And the Blades want you to kill him? Fuck that. I fus ro dahed Delphine and Esbern off a cliff and walked away, never to return. Let the Blades fade into history while I go talk with my dragon buddy.

    • @TheNN
      @TheNN 5 лет назад +782

Delphine was using the Dragonborn from the moment they met. She ONLY made a move because the Dragons returned. The Thalmor only looked for Esbern more because they thought he knew things about them. She manipulated things from day one, such as stealing the horn of Jurgan Windcaller knowing the Dragonborn would have to come and get it.
Had the Dragons not reappeared when they did, she would've just simply stayed in hiding, probably til the day she died, Esbern might've been found and killed by the Thalmor possibly, and the Blades would've ended with them.
It was only pure coincidence (at least in-universe that is) that things ended up working out for her at all. Dragons came back, as did a Dragonborn appearing with them, and from that she had her excuse to come out of hiding and strike back against the Thalmor. She had a Dragonborn at beck and call because she had things the Dragonborn needed, was able to set up a new base of operations, and declare herself the 'acting' Grandmaster of the reformed Blades.
So by the end, by having the Dragonborn do all the hard work, she has essentially everything she wanted again without having to do anything all that difficult really. And so she has the utter GALL to order...ORDER the Dragonborn, the one person she is meant to be obeying, to kill Paarthurnax, merely because as 'dragon slayers' they and the Dragonborn should kill any and all dragons and all while cowardly hiding behind something so simply as saying that their 'oaths' as Blades now prevent them from helping the Dragonborn (also note that this little 'order' doesn't apply to Odahviing).
      As Arngeir says, "Bloodthirsty barbarians."

You already feel to dominate something. I mean you become the leader of every guild. the Companions, the Thieves Guild, the College of Winterhold and the Dark Brotherhood. It's no coincidence that you become the head master all the sudden. You have the dragon's soul, meaning you'll be in control of something. Hack I wouldn't be surprised if the last Dragonborn becomes High King of Skyrim. Look at Talos, he ruled all Tamriel and he is Dragonborn. For better or for worse. Most of the Emperors of the Empire has dragon's blood, willing to rule and dominate because it's in their nature till the last one died during the Oblivion crisis. Not saying you'll become bad, I mean look at Talos. Even the will to dominate and rule, he wanted to unite all Tamriel as one for a good thing. Not all dragons are bad and yet the Blades stupidity wants to kill them all and for what? They be no better then the damn Thalmor!
If the Blades knew this, they eventually will kill you after you done all the dirty work for them.

*Paarthunax meets you, trains you, tells you everything you need to know. He doesn't lie, and even in this speech flat out tells you that he more or less doesn't consider himself a dovah as others perceive, but the temptation is always there. He helps you meditate, gaining more power, but ultimately seeks to teach the dragonborn how to overcome the deep urges and lust for power*
*The blades make you jump through hoops, make you find their old fortress, and basically reform their order while they were unable to do so. They offer you very little, just help killing dragons, but expect you to kill a teacher and an ally for them to do so*
At the end of it, the choice is this. Choosing creation and wisdom that is born from destruction. Or choosing destruction that was born from wisdom. I never choose Blades, because it's very clear that whatever they were, and however good their intentions are, that is long gone and they only seek the bloodiest aspect of it.

    • @Ryvaken

What hoops? Everything they do in the main quest is in direct advancement of the cause of SAVING THE WORLD.
Bleak Falls Barrow: Vital information is hidden in a ruin. I'll get Farengar to find someone to get it for me.
Blade in the Dark: I need to know you're dragonborn and I need to know I'm right about where the dragons are coming from. Here's almost everything I've learned so far about the threat.
Diplomatic Immunity: From everything I know, this is my best guess as to who is behind it, and I'll get you the best opportunity I can to get in there safe.
A Cornered Rat: Well that was a bust but you uncovered a great new lead that is in IMMEDIATE MORTAL PERIL.
Alduin's Wall: Well we don't have everything we need to know, but we know where to find the missing pieces. We'll help you get to it.
Season Unending: Let's convince people to stop fighting and save the world.
      Now compare the Greybeards.
The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller: We don't need the horn, really, but it's a learning experience to fight draugr.
The Throat of the World: You managed to learn things we already knew and didn't want you to know. We will never teach you words again, you have to find them in dungeons. Also go talk to a dragon.
Season Unending: We don't want to get involved. Maybe the end of the world is a good thing. But you asked nicely.
The Blades are proactive and purpose-driven, working with the best intelligence they have, which they share readily. The Greybeards and Paarthurnax create nothing, do nothing, and conceal more than they teach.
Do I think there's a purpose served in killing Paarthurnax? No. Do I think the Blades make better allies than Paarthurnax? Hell yes.

That's why the blades want Paarthurnax dead, it's his past actions. But of course he has overcome his evil nature through great effort, and he seeks to bring peace to the world, by teaching his ways to the dragons after the dragonborn "defeated" Alduin. There are times after it that some dragons clearly won't attack you, and they just fly by.

He listens out of self preservation, not loyalty. If he were ever to gain the strength to challenge the Dragonborn, he would no longer have a reason to obey. Which is why it'd be wise not to trust him. Wise not to trust a dovah. But for now, and for any time in the near future, that doesnt seem likely to happen which is why you shouldn't mistrust one either. Because that leaves an opening for growth, for power. If it were easy, people wouldn't spend their whole lives having to chase it.

Of course, you still need to make up for any evils you committed, but my point still stands.
So, if we're going by the bible, the Mario Dragon is right. It WOULD be better to seek redemption than to simply know no evil. Because nobody is born good. Rather we learn to overcome our sins.

Paarthurnax makes a really good point at the end.
Everyone can be born good, everyone can be born an absolute saint and be seen as a Good Samaritan; but take a look at Superman after what The Joker did to him in the Injustice games, all it took was for the prince of crime to make him lose control and Superman became a dictator, thus shattering the Justice League and causing the world’s finest to start going for each other’s throats.
It’s like the old saying goes, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”.
And what pisses me off is that despite Paarthurnax overcoming his inborn nature, the Blades still wanted him dead. I mean sure he wasn’t the best dragon and they were wise not to trust him or any dragon, but they forget that he helped mortals overthrow Alduin, meaning they shouldn’t still call for his death.
    ...that’s just my two cents

Agreed. I also believe that no one is born good, but everyone has a choice to make. Paarthanax regretted the deaths he caused, and chose to lead the greybeards, as well as help Dragonborn fulfill his destiny as a means of atonement. The Blades are also decendents of Nords, who strayed away from the true ways of the voice, and used their shout powers for their own selfish means, which ended in not only their deaths, but also were cursed with undead, which is why you see so many Draugr. That last statement Paarthanax made should resonate in the minds of anyone who thinks they above anyone else, simpy because they haven't lived their lives and don't really know them.

    • @corvuszorcath398
      @corvuszorcath398 6 лет назад +2

Dean Andrews no mate, the draugr are still alive. The draugr are ancient nords who where apart of the dragon cult and they wished to be immortal like the dragons so they used magic to make them so, but they had a bad side affect. The draugr pray to the dragon priest and each time they wake they walk around their tomb, light the candles, kill any intruders and then sacrifice a small part of their life force to the local dragon priest, this way the dragon priest can be preserved. each time the draugr go back to sleep they regrow their lifeforce to stay alive and to sacrifice it later.
The blades being draugr? That's a big mistake! Why would blades who swore to kill all dragons protect a dragon priest? Surely any blade would want to kill them.

I believe it is better to know you are capable of evil, but strong enough to overcome temptation. It shows you have a strong character and value for what is good. Those who are born good and remain good are more than likely, ignorant of how bad the darkness is. Because of that they don't understand the inner battle of some who was swallowed by the dark and yet still hold a good morality of themselves and others. It's like going through life without the lessons you can only experience from seeing it from more than one point of view.

Instead of living long enough to become the next villan. You continue living and battle your inner demons to stay a hero.

Parthurnax's crimes may never be undone, but he was the first (& only) to leave Alduin's bidding, he was the first one to separate ways from his elder brother, even mourning for his death as Alduin was the pride of Akatosh. His crimes may always be guilty of the chaos and destruction he caused, but he will always be credited to help the Dovahkiin as well
