- This is my story on Michael Schenker and John Sykes, their auditions with Ozzy Osbourne. My good old friend Shawn Staples from California helped me to narrate this story. My stories and reviews represent a great value for guitar players, musicians and rock fans. I do my best to create original and interesting content. Hope you enjoy it guys!
John Sykes has always had the most magnificent hair.
And a Awesome sound 🎸
Brad Gillis brought those old Sabbath tracks to a new level on Speak Of The Devil. Just awesome playing.
Brad was epic! Amazing album Speak of the Devil...still a favourite! Saw Brad play with Ozzy in 82’ and he was outrageously good. Nobody talks about his time with Ozzy but Brad period remains a favourite for me
The Speak of the Devil album is what I used to learn how to play a lot of basic guitar riffs my first couple years of playing. 1983-84ish. Brad Gillis Is tragically underrated but will always be one of my all-time favorites. Was never able to use the whammy bar as a tool for tasty phrasing quite like him though. Nice to know I'm not alone in my love for Mr. Gillis! 🤘🏻
His bar work is unmatched. Definitely an innovator...
True very true that album screams Gillis on guitar. Pretty good stuff..😎✌
How the hell did he decide that Night Ranger was a good choice
Michael Schenker and Ozzy Osbourne would have killed each other fighting over the last bottle of booze.
Nice one lol
They'd have most likely killed each other over the last line of blow also LOL
Pete Way was with Ozzy for a bit. So was Brad Gillis. New Night Ranger is kinda cool. Not sure where I'm goin with this. Thanks for the post. RIP Pete, Phil, and Randy.
Sykes and Ozzy would have been EPIC!!! That wouldve worked really good, i wish they would do it now even although Sykes does his own music really well, his new single is AWESOME!!! "Dawning of a brand new day"!!
Yes, Sykes would be Epic screwed by Ozzy’s wife, as any other guitarist…
I used to gig with one of those HH amps in my first band when I was a teenager back in the early 80s and I loved it !
The John Sykes interview is from Kerrang in 1984, and Ozzy wasn't "pissed off", he was pissed up
Right, I wrote "Ozzy was pissed" meaning Ozzy was dead drunk and Shawn read it "pissed off".
Two great guitar players!
Love the old scorpions albums, and whitesnake was never the same after john sykes left. 🤘
Michael was only on Lonesome Crow, the 1st Scorpions album before quitting to join UFO , and was on a few Lovedrive tracks when he briefly rejoined. Uli Roth deserves credit for lead on the albums between Lonesome Crow and Lovedrive. Sykes was awesome in Whitesnake.
who played those outrageous vibrato guitar chords in here i go again? (not the lead break) i turn it up for that part EVERY time-lol!
@@craigrheberling The was Sykes. Adrian Vandenberg played the solo on that song, but the rest of the album was John Sykes.
@@jacobbutler3426 that's what i thought - by the attack, and that "whole handful of a chord" vibrato! the first time i saw a guitar player do that, on a les paul- right in front of me, at a concert, was rick medlocke, then of blackfoot- during "train train" - unforgettable! mid 70's
@@craigrheberling this is true. I never like Vandenberg. He had a couple of good songs in his solo album, "Wait" You and "Burning Heart" I just didn't like his sound.
Knac radio, long beach. Was lifestyle during late 80s 1986 LA. No radio station (i know of) played songs like 'angel of death' at 6:00 in morning.
Thank you for your good information!
Many thanks, much appreciated!!!
Great stuff man , your clearly so passionate about your uploads. I wonder how much they were offering these guys cashwise
Many thanks tasos diaforetico, much appreciated! Oh I heard they didn't pay too much, just 200$ or maybe a little more a week
“I can’t tell if he’s any good, we’ll have to take him to America.” What a disservice to Randy Rhodes work and John Sykes to his face.
I love everything about your music forever your all awesome rockers forever 💯♥️🎸❤🤘
Excellent info 🤘
Killer work as always,, Could you imagine if John or Michael joined Ozzy we wouldn’t have there Music contributions so glad we have Randy’s work w/ Ozzy it worked out for the best, interesting... :)
Many thanks Scott, much appreciated!!!
Scott White Where are the music contributions? Which direction?
Michael Schenker Group MSG 79-82 that contribution, John Sykes Tiger’s of Pan Tang 83 and Thin Lizzy after that those are the contributions they gave us we wouldn’t have that if they would’ve joined Ozzy ..
The assertion that JS was influenced by Dio and Vivian is just wrong. Both players were heavily influenced by Gary Moore.
That's True. Gary Moore.
Great decisions by both Michale Schenker & John Sykes.
Ozzy wouldn't be anywhere without Sharon and Tony Iommi.
Schenker or Sykes playing with Ozzy would have been interesting. I think Sykes would have been the better fit of the two but I guess we'll never know. That being said I don't think Brad Gillis ever got enough credit for his time with Ozzy - he was amazing! Criminally underrated for sure
Sykes, Rhoads, Viv Campbell and most any other guitarist of that era were all massively influenced by Gary Moore and also Mike Schenker.
Randy Rhoads lmao, you know everything...mind reader 😭
Yes they were. It's a shame Gary Moore didn't get the credit he deserved. Sykes loved him in Think Lizzy
Totally agree, Sykes and Viv Campbell had always cited Gary Moore as their main influence.
Shenker? That doesn't sound right to me.
Viv Campbell also loved Rory Gallagher
Brilliant video man and so funny too. Is there any audio clips of John Sykes playing I don't know?
Many thanks Tony, much appreciated! yes it's on youtube, check it out
Nowadays from everything that is out there on ozzy you can tell working for ozzy would be a total pain in the ass. I truly believe had Randy lived and left ozzy. Sharon and ozzy would have screwed Randy over like they did with Lee, Bob, and Jake.
Is this because of Sharon?
Any rumored reason and explanation for a failed collaboration or potential collaboration, nevermind a feud, if its source is any Osbourne, the likeliness of truth is about 1% if even that.
I think they gave Randy's mom some money?
@@daviclar867 they should have
Dont forget Sharon Screwed over Lemmy for songs
Coverdale, Campbell, Aldridge, Sarzo...wish they had recorded an album!
Lol, thank God both Michael and John declined the offer !! While John might take Randy's place, Michael is way too much for Ozzy, he must be only his own boss!
...And Michael is not into playing other guitarist's leads, which he would've had to do with Ozzy. He didn't like playing Uli's leads when he was with the Scorpions.
@@thomasbrandt4816 absolutely , that's why he left Scorpions once again despite the fact he played Uli's stuff flawlessly (imho Michael has always been a better improviser than Uli on stage, just listen to what he did on those early Lovedrive gigs, unbelievable guitar playing ) and he never accepted the gazillion of offers from other big names. I mean, I love his integrity as an artist, even in the bad moments! That's rock and roll..
@@lifeisnice23 Truly no Doubt..
michael would've crushed crowley's solo.
@@mikenealon4042I have never heard Schenker play at that level. I am highly skeptical that he can.
Really good guitar players
Interesting. I wasn't aware of this. Good stuff. I love Ozzy's Randy-period as well as Jake E. Lee. To my ear, most of these players have very different styles, so imagining any of them playing with Ozzy during what became the Jake-period is hard to imagine. Sykes is a great player! He and Vivian, I definitely see the similarities. M Schenker, I could definitely see him having been a good Randy replacement. Same with George Lymch, who was of course friends with Randy. Someone mentioned Gary Moore, but I can't imagine Moore playing with Ozzy. I could see Moore playing Whitesnake Slide It In material. On the other hand, I could see Scott Gorham or Scott Robertson of Lizzy playing Randy-type riffs. Of course, Brad Gillis did a terrific job as an immediate replacement for Randy, but he was much better suited for Night Ranger. Soooooo many great guitar players from that era!!!
Can't imagine Gary Moore playing with Ozzy? What about Led Clones? That track is pretty awesome (especially for being kind of a tongue in cheek joke tune) and to me it sounds like Gary wouldn't be too far off the mark to be a fit playing with Ozzy. Not to mention - Ozzy desperately wanted to get Gary in the band for some time.
It would never have lasted regardless who Ozzy would have chosen in my opinion, two headstrong guitarist.
Yes Randy Rhoads was one of Sykes' biggest influences. Among his influences were also Eddie Van Halen, Gary Moore and Ritchie Blackmore. There's an interview where John Sykes says that he copied Blackmore's stuff in the 70s
Michael Schenker had opportunities to play and record with Aerosmith, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Ozzy, Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy...at least this is what he said.
Coverdale,Marsden,Moody, Lord,Murray and Dowle.
My recall of the story: Michael has wanted a "kings fee" due to Ozzy. So with a little insight in Michaels psychology, this is what likely happened. Ozzy wanted Michael. Michael did not want to join Ozzy nor turn him down either. So he claimed a phantasie fee knowing Ozzy couldn`t accept. So Michael got rid of the job without turning the old Master down.
Michael said, that Ozzy could join MSG. BTW, Ozzy as singer is overrated.
I just read an article in an old Guitar magazine... Gary Moore was asked to join Ozzy
Yes Ozzy also asked Gary Moore to replace Randy but Gary wanted to do his own thing
True, several times.
Buckethead tried out for Ozzy, but Ozzy wouldn't let him play with a chicken bucket on his head.
Bucket head sin;t good enough to play with Ozzy. He can't write songs.
@@mikeraz594 Ya that was Bob Daisly's job. He wrote alot of songs for Ozzy's first 7 solo albums.
@@mikeraz594... Where do you work... Walmart??
@@ernslinger4333 Yeah I work in the music Department
A little known fact: After the late, great Randy Rhoads (RIP) died, the first guitar player that Ozzie asked (actually begged) to play with him was Dave Meniketti, from Y&T. Dave turned down the offer and Ozzie gave the job to Brad Gillis, who did a great job filling Randy's shoes, before he left to form Night Ranger, another great band. I am glad Dave Meniketti turned down the offer though, because Y&T is my favorite band of all time. Ozzie also offered George Lynch the job, but then later retracted the offer at Sharon's request. Jake E. Lee is also a great guitar player, but rumor has it he was screwed over by Sharon so he left. Zakk Wylde is a very good guitar player in his own right, but his style of pinch harmonics every other note does not really appeal to me. To each their own I guess. Come to think of it, Ozzie has been associated with some really great guitar players over the years, starting with Tommy Iommi, from Black Sabbath. No matter who the guitar player was though Ozzie produced some really good music that has endured very well over many decades. 👌
@RL E Hey, no argument from me there. I just don't want to ruffle the feathers of the Zak Wylde fans. You know how that can get. IMO Jake E. Lee's style fit Ozzy perfectly. He is an amazing guitar player. I saw Jake play with Ozzy 3 times and they were all incredible shows. Too bad Sharon had to screw him over though. Brad Gillis also did an excellent job, considering who he was filling in for. Brad is also a great guitar player, but his style is much different than Jake's (there is a reason they call him the Whammy Bar King....lol). I am happy Brad moved on to form Night Ranger though. I have some great memories with both Ozzie and Night Ranger from the 80's onward. Keep on Rockin'!
FYI, Brad was already in Night Ranger, they were signed by Don Arden’s label as well, that’s why he was chosen, Night Ranger was on break, Brad had two weeks to learn all the material and finish the tour.
Brads interview on the subject is here on utube. You can hear Brad tell ya himself.
I love Jake E Lee, but damn Sykes would’ve made a bad ass guitarist in Ozzy.
Ozzy and Black Sabbath was the soundtrack of my LSD trips in 1985. Good times?
@@eckg7592 Trust me... Listen to White Zombie's La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One, and Astro Creep: 2000 , in the dark. These albums are loaded with sounds and shit that you can't hear sober. These albums were made for acid. I did it back in '95 and I've preached it to anyone who will listen ever since.
keep on smoking it
Even Gary Moore was offered to play for ozzy. But he rejected because he had his own band.
I heard that!
I think Sykes would of been great live with Ronnie James dio 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
If they ask for more than $1 it would be too much for Sharon.
Oof
Kind of the same way Dio and his wife screwed Viv,Jimmy and Vinnie .
lol
Schenker is the link between Blackmore and yngwie..never got rhoads in the UK as we were blown away by EVH and couldn't understand all the fuss. JAKE E LEE was definitely a step up from rhoads
Though
All the fuss your a moran.
@@richardortegon5007 I guess your a Trump man
@Gina Doll Lemmy not wrong
Any of these guitarist would of hated joining Ozzy...thanks to Sharon Osbourne.
I think Brad Gillis was Ozzy's second best guitarist besides Toni Iommi.
The proof that ozzy was wasted during the audition is that he couldnt tell if John Sykes was any good
Who is this Phillen Aught?
Nah... Sharon said nope guys your too well known
Screw Ozzy Thin Lizzy Thunder and Lightning is fuckin awesome
Ozzy made a mistake not using either one...both euro guitar stylists.
Jake said he was paid a100 a show.
@bob proctor Good catch I meant to edit that I meant to say $100 a day not for show I don’t get the outback part you’re talking about though
Ozzy=Sharon
And in actuality jake e.lee was the best fit
Jakes writing and guitar playing is stellar on Bark at the moon
@@snfu6574 it says Ozzy wrote those parts. Jake just played them.
@@snfu6574 waiting for you guys to 🤯.
@@jaymunday100 I'd like to see Ozzy playing the BATM Riff! Ozzy didn't write any music, he only wrote the lyrics and Vocal Melodies.
@@centaurus5676 yeah right. Ozzy is the man. It says he wrote all that music.
Thank god it didnt happen for these 2.. otherwise there wont be 2 great albums with jake e. lee
...and then Badlands!
I know, that's a tough one, I still would love to have heard Sykes with ozzy but Lee is unreal
I love schenker but ozzy and schenker,I don’t see it.I can’t see Michael and ozzy writing ozzy songs.Sykes I could see though
Randy was too good for Ozzy and Sharon, as were Schenker and Sykes.
Dave Meniketti was too good for them, too-He turned down Ozzy/Sharon AND Whitesnake...
Props for Dave Meniketti.
Well Said..
Damn right Tommy from Cleveland Ohio
As great as randy was, he blossomed under Ozzy. He also recycled a bunch of ideas. Ozzy is very underrated and his talent is dismissed
Sykes would have been a awesome choice.......
Ozzy and Sharon goofball couple
It's pronounced "Lie-not", not "Lynn-ot".
Schenker claims Phil Mogg punched him before he “disappeared”. Ozzy would have done it with his notorious Birmingham Hello. Michael is crazy like a fox.
Schenker could not play Randy’s solos. He just couldn’t in my opinion. I can’t even imagine that happening.
What? Schenker could play any Solo if he wants. (80‘s Metal bands)
I knew Schenker, but Sykes? You sure? I doubt
Yes Sykes told the story himself when he'd just joined Whitesnake
Sykes might be better than Wylde. In 1988 he was definitely better.
So proper equipment wouldn’t be a huge jcm 800 and a 4x12 cab to ozzy audition lol good choice John lol
Rose?
Interesting stuff - but it's not Lyn-*ott* , although it's spelled Lynott it's actually pronounced "lie-not".
👍🤘
Yes I watched some old videos and interviewers also pronounced "lyn-not"
If Michael's goals as a musician were to return to being a starving artist, he certainly succeeded with flying colors. He should look in the mirror. MSG fan's memories are more vivid than reality.
Shawn Starks... What the hell are you babbling about skippy?
I saw Michael Schenker at the Flying Monkey in Plymouth ,NH this year . He's still at the top of his game. The solo during Rock Bottom was incredible .
Michael is king
0:12 rose
Wtf
Its widely known they didnt wsnt to pay a decent guitarist, that's why they got Randy and then Jake then Zakk....they went with unknowns Sharon didnt want to pay nor have a guy overshadow Ozzy ...she said this years ago
Schenker was too naive to be in Ozzy..camp so didn't make it ..n so doesn't surprise me much
Ozzy and Sharon used to rip offs the persons around them, no big name guitarists will join ozzy! No, don’t!
Gillis was better than both of em.
Take his Floyd away and there's not much there.
@@thomasbrandt4816 are you kidding? Check out his fluid melodic lines throughout the speak of the devil double live album. Sweet rhythm and great improvisation. All those two guitarist would be doing is chuck berry unison bends and pull offs.

John Sykes and Michael Schenker in the '80s = Chuck Berry?
Saw Gillis live with Ozzy.It was horrible. The worst guitar player Ozzy has ever played with.Randy Rhoads second.
@@guddergo7116you obviously never listened to john sykes he can play stuff that no one can
Respectfully These two amazing guitarist struggled to play the songs in the manner that was as articulate RR in other words they were not quite good enough and that's the Gospel.
J Gee... Opinions are like assholes... Everybody has one... And most of them stink...
Shcenker is one strange dude, his own brother Rudolph doesn't even talk to him anymore
Money
Vice versa. Michael doesn't talk to Rudolf anymore.
@@cumuluscloud3854 sorry yes, thank for correction
Hes an alcoholic that's why. The reason the Scorpions kicked him out.
Sykes wasn't good enough to play with Ozzy
Sharon was the real problem. That's why Jake E. Lee left. John Sykes has killer vocals and is a great guitarist. Glad he didn't join Ozzy.
Ozzy the luckiest drunk ever in history rock, if he was really that hammered in those days,, can't stumble on one great shredder after another with luck n a good team,,,,damn lm totally jealous,,lol
