Dear God, I loved this man and his music. It's my secret growing up music as a young shy married backward woman. Harry's music and lyrics made me a much deeper and better person. Thank you Harry.
Harry came down off the stage & sang this song directly to my mother many years ago. I thought her face would break from smiling. I hope he gave her an encore when they met in heaven. Thanks for posting.
I had the pleasure of seeing Harry twice in concert. The second time he was standing right next to me after his concert but I was too shy to even say hello. (will always regret that). Years later Tom played a concert in my hometown. After the concert I mentioned it to Tom.. He was so very nice and his response..Maddy Harry loved his fans. Since that time I have met many other stars, musicians, etc. and everyone has been very nice. I will always have very fond memories. Such a tragic loss to lose Harry, Jim Croce, John Denver, Rick Nelson, and others.😂😂😂😂😂😂@@raymondhull3838
Harry Chaplin opened my eyes and ears over 40 years ago. His influence was so important. I still love listening to Harry. My favorites include A better place to be, The Circle, Mr Tanner. I miss him dearly. Thank you Harry Chapin
It's been almost 35 years and we all still miss you Harry. what a beautiful voice, and human being. they don't make em like this anymore. one of the very 1st musical experiences I can remember. driving down the highway with my dad probably 1984ish, his work van broke down luckily we were sitting in front of the garage when that happened, unfortunately it was 5 am, garage didn't open til 7 or so, we sat in the van listening to Harry til the shop opened. 4 years later my dad passed away, I've always had my dad to thank for harry and obviously thanks to harry for making all those fantastic tunes. 2 people I miss alot. both gone too soon. one day we will all be together.
35 years I'm 55 how did I get indoctintated with his sounds? you know , and I'm writing it now? it was just after dark the cats in the cradle and chord turned to a G
i started singing some chapin at work on the 15th. no one else knew of him so i filled them in. the 1st thing i heard the next morning on my radio alarm was he had died. i still shed tears to this day about it. never got to see him in concert. if i had to choose between him and a pink floyd concert i would have to go with chapin. i'm 61 and was there when all of chapin's music came out. while i don't care for most remakes i have to say ugly kid joe did an excellent job with cat's in the cradle. it is said that if someone is remembered after they die they aren't dead. HARRY WILL NEVER DIE!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Harry in 30 plus live concerts and I love Coreys' Coming from theLegends of the Lost and Found album. When I found out I was gonna have a daughter, there was no doubt my husband and I would name her Corey. Miss you and your stories Harry...hope you are telling some good stories to all in Heaven
He wrote and performed some of the most epic emotional songs we can all relate to in our hearts.Hn my mind he's not a Performer He's a guy who portrays real life
My favorite tends to be whichever one is currently playing, but yeah... Story of a Life is definitely something special. "All your dreams of open spaces/You find in your children's faces" and the conclusion of the song...😭
There are not many people David interviewed that he seemed to be in awe of, but Harry deservedly was one. I love them both and miss Harry immeasurably.
I have been to 5 Harry Chapin Concerts, my favorite at the cathedral of Georgetown Univ in 1977. Later one day, while back in Chapel Hill NC at the University of North Carolina, word began to spread that Harry was going to be at the Pit near the student hall to do a benefit for UNICEF. I do not know what came over me..I just knew I had to be there. I was 2 hours early...and just sat where I knew his seat/stool had to be. That's the effect Harry had on people that knew his heart and music.
At least you got to see him. I went to my first and last Harry concert July 16th 1981 Eisenhower park. I was 18 at the time. They had everything set up on the stage, his stool where he sat was front and center and they announced over the PA that he had died while driving there. Everybody started crying, it was horrific. Probably the saddest thing I saw there was they had disabled kids in wheelchairs sitting in the front row and they started slowly wheeling them back into vans, it was horrific. Other people like myself wouldn't leave, couldn't leave. We stayed there till late at night playing his music.
I didn’t think Letterman guest hosted on the Tonight Show so early. Chapin was killed in 1981 and Letterman didn’t have his own show until about 4-5 years later. I wish this video included Chopin’s sequel to Taxi. That was such a beautiful song that most everyone can relate too. So moving.
I love listening to Harry Chapin's stories. His live performances i like best. This performance it seemed maybe he was trying to work too hard at it. Maybe it's just me. I have been trying to find a place to watch his film " Mothers and Daughters: A Loving War " Anyine have any ideas where i can see it..errrr for free.
Probably so Bob sewvello since Dave ain't his USUAL dirt-baggish self.(even though it comes out a little, "do we have any fat and stupid people here").
@@Mandy101Pro 1979 I think. He mentioned he was married 11 years before, and that was in 1968. His "Sequel" album (noted to be in production here) was released in 1980.
We lost Harry Chapin so many years ago and we still feel soooo bad. But, there is a new singer that could be so close to giving what he did. Phillip Phillips! How do you get this idea to him????
great story teller. I knew his dad a little bit..nice guy if you need another amazing singer songwriter to fill in for Harry, check out John Gorka....this is one truly gifted musician.
We can't see it, but off camera when the producer is telling him to "break" for a commercial, they had better take the break. It's a trick to interrupt the guest for a commercial. It serves two purposes to get us to watch the commercials & continue watching the show after the commercial. If they break after every guest, we would watch the star we want to see, then tune out. So we should cut Letterman some slack.

I cried the day he died I was 19 yrs old....I still listen to him and shed a tear
Many of Harry's songs just reach right into the middle of my soul and touch parts I don't usually want to look at.

Harry in a suit and tie! God didn’t grace us with as many beautiful souls like Harry’s as we truly need to guide us through life today.
Yes, Harry in a suit !!!
A magnetic voice telling a wonderful story set to beautiful music. Harry did this with ease dozens of times.

Joe Swharta Yes, he was a beautiful, caring person who did so much good for others in his short life. I was heartbroken when he passed.
Amazing!!
what is the name of the movie Harry is talking about??????
Probably my favorite Harry Chapin song - always brings tears of happiness. What an amazing man and artist Harry was, very grateful to him.
Maybe his all-time best vocal performance. Unreal.

this reminds me of the great concerts Harry gave. Such soul.
I'm so glad my dad introduced me to Harry Chapin when i was a child. I'm 51 yrs old now and STILL Listen to his music.
Wow, this brought tears to my eyes.
OMG, Harry's got so much charisma as a Talk Show guest. The networks could have easily given him a tonight show.
More than 40 years ago! And Betty White sitting next to him!
Saw Harry 11 times. Met him a couple times. Odd to see him in a suit. And John Wallace... hardly recognize him.
What a awesome storyteller.
He was brilliant
The man sure had an imagination that must have taken him away to other worlds. God I'm in tears!
Travel on 10,000 miles and still stay where You are 😌
So Sweet, how did I never hear him before now? I love his simplicity and passion ... that's real singing, from his heart!

such a great man. such a sad end. Thank you bagnon for sharing.

This is amazing. Beyond words.
He could have been an actor. He had a great face.
I always cry when I hear his music 😢
A most awesome production from time waiting for your ride!
A most unusual song for sure. RIP
Betty White still living thirty eight years after Harry died.
Harry has been gone half my life. I still listen and hope the young find hm.

I wonder if his wife gets on RUclips to watch him play and if she reads the comments. I'm sure she knew and knows how revered Harry was and is.
Harry gave most of his income to fight hunger...An amazing artist gone way to soon...

This song always makes me cry for some reason. It's my all time favorite of his.
This is "The Tonight Show". Dave was filling in for Johnny Carson.
I agree, this must be about 1978 or 1979. Letterman started Late Night in 1982.

This is not Late Night... Late Night was first aired in early 1982!
This is the ill-fated 'The David Letterman Show', 1980...
I did not think Harry lives long enough to do Late Night...
@@philipcone357 No it's not, it's the Tonight Show... see 12:30
this was 1979 ...
Mail order Annie,
The manner of his death was rather strange.
Letterman. No class. Chapin the term "class" is what he is all about!
Letterman = highly over-rated, highly neurotic, when Late Night became self-indulgent.
So how old is Letterman here, 14?
Is it just me, or could David and Harry be brothers?
