The Caramel Dial has raised a lot of private messages - basically suggesting the watch is not original and is put together. If you listen to my comments you will hear that I say that I am on alert that the lume may be adjusted, (but based on photos I would still buy it) and that the hands are possibly added. Almost all speedmasters of this age without provenance are possibly in this state, with some non original parts. The trick is to value it, knowing these things. And to all of you who sent me messages, thank you! Consider adding to the debate here - I am always open to learning and hearing what experts have to say. As I keep repeating, I am just an enthusiastic amateur watch collector who enjoys sharing information. So post the comments here!
Prices that the watches sold for (excl. 25% Commission): FAP Omega Ref. CK 2998-5 CHF 50,000 Omega Ref. 105.012-66 - CHF 16,250 Ultraman ST 145.012-67 CHF 40,000 The Caramel dial went for more than double the high estimate CHF 102,500 Above the high estimates
Thanks for the brilliant informative videos. I'm learning a Lot. Looking forward to finding my first vintage watch. Have a few modern one which i love . Sold my 40th anniversary i owned for the newer version and miss the old one. keep the video's coming regards Dave
Although I never particularly liked Omegas nor the Speedmaster I bought a cheap transitional 3570 after watching your videos. Surprisingly, I absolutely adore it. As you say the best way to learn is to buy and wear and compare watches. And I already look out for the next one. Hopeless. 😂😂
William, there is a 'Soyuz-Apollo' dialled speedmaster on eBay at the present time,I'm sure you have seen this marriage of a watch but I felt it may make an interesting video? My heartbeat raced when I first spotted it! Regards.
Hello William! Thanks for that amazing video. The next auction is on 8th of May 21 with some interesting Speedys. An Ultraman again. Please could you do a Video on that watches? 😌👌🏻Searching for the right vintage Speedy your videos help alot!
Great video and excellent insight on the watches, thank you. A question if I may please, can you explain why the dial on the first Speedmaster has gone this caramel brown colour, is this just the way that the original paint has faded or something else? Thanks.
There are theories, but I do not know why. What I am learning to recognise is the colour that a naturally aged dial will turn. These early domed radium dials have been seen in this caramel. Several of the early 2998's can do this too, while later watches have a dark chocolate. The 1969's never go this warm caramel, but they do have a nice variety of browns.
Always extremely difficult assessing any items by looking at (photoshop-enhanced-best light?) photographs... be it a watch, a postal stamp, a comic book... see it in real life!
Of course! However as these watches are in Geneva, and many of us are not, I have to work from Photos. In the old days we just had a hard catalogue - buying from that was seriously brave.

Thanks for the info!
The inscription on the back on the ultraman is in swedish. It says ”from a friend” and on the bottom ”christmas 1968”.
Thank you, useful info.

Interesting assessment! Thanks for putting it together. Do you think the bidding got a little crazy on the higher value models?
Could be. These Phillips auctions are more like retail, with motivated salesmen, encouraging retail bidders to compete
Caramel dial 145.022-69 on ebay at present from Mexico, would be a good one to review?
With all the spots? Its very damaged, but it sold for only $4,000 so someone will enjoy it at that level.
Great video. Fantastic insight
Glad you enjoyed it!

Phillips doesn't clean the watches, ever, nor do most if any of the other auction houses... so often they are full of grime and dirt.
