    Thanks. Even after 4 years this tutorial is just as effective and easy to follow along as it was when you posted published this.

    Don't scale back to zero after each corner. Scale -1 on the appropriate axis (example s x -1 or s y -1) and the angle is correctly set (or flipped) for the next corner. Only need to shear once.
    And k z c is helpful too (k = knife tool. z = cut through all mesh, not just the nearest. c = constrain to angle). Then click n' drag at 45 degree across the mesh.Tap space to finalize the cut. Delete 'offcut'.

      @@JoshGambrell Duplicate the floor. Extrude up. Use i to inset top and bottom. Delete center. Bridge loop. Bevel (or new custom bevel preset). Cut Doors gaps.
      Yeah, when I first saw someone do this for moldings ... ouch,ouch.
      Now its the whole room in seconds and time to redo the video :(
      Note: ( Hi viewers ) It needs the inner faces for the inset - so even with selecting wall bases ( aka doors pre-cut ) you still need to fill the center.

    Thanks for your video, I'm new to Blender, coming from 3DS Max. I have a few questions, I hope you can help me :) I'm used to creating a spline for the profile in 3DS Max and either extruding that spline to make my baseboard, or have that profile follow a path (another spline) around a room - it's called the Sweep modifier in 3DS Max. 1) Is this type of workflow I've described possible in Blender (4.0) ? 2) Your baseboard was just made using straight lines. I work with a baseboard company and a lot of their baseboards have curves in them. So how would I do that (in 3DS Max it's quite simple with splines, so I'm always looking for a Spline type solution in Blender :) ). Finallly, 3) You went into Wireframe mode, yet your reference image stayed visible (ie it didn't go into wireframe mode as well) I would have thought everything would have gone into Wireframe mode??? How did you prevent the reference plane with the baseboard profiles not go into wireframe mode? Many thanks.

    Thanks for the tutorial Josh, I'm only having one problem. Since we built these baseboards vertex by vertex, the face/side of the base board cannot be loop cut. because it has more than 4 vertices. This is only an issue as my base board has some curves in it, and I wanted to use the subdivision modifier to create those curves. But in order to get the edges I want square after subdividing, I must make loop cuts, and in this case I can't. What must I do if I make the baseboard vertex by vertex, and I need to add loop cuts?

    A nice one, thanks for sharing. Never had much luck with the shear tool, maybe now I can get it right. Although I have to admit I might be too lazy to do it that way. I do those things with curves. I use a curve (straight of course) as path and the profile as bevel-object in the curve options. As long as I use the handle type vector for the path-curve, Blender does those corners automatically for me :-)
    I use those for baseboards, moldings for ceilings, picture frames and even profiles for wooden parts (on old fashion furniture e.g.)
    I was also thinking about trying such profiles for the new custom bevel options. Did you already play around with that? I didn't yet, but want to try that out. i have seen that those bevel profiles can be saved as preferences and maybe that is a great option.

    • @JoshGambrell
      @JoshGambrell  4 года назад +1

      The profiles are great but I honestly just bevel by eye, unless I require specific measurements. I'm sure there are plenty of cases saving the preferences would be a big help, though :)

      I like detailing architecture with crown moldings, baseboards, cornices etc... The curves/bevel thing is such a struggle. I end up with shapes going in every direction, reversing half way through arghh .. I'm a CAD, SketchUp user, Blender is new... About 3 months in... So many n show things I can't seem to figure out even with practice and tutorials.... I like this drag/extrude and shear corners....

  • @bravo123345

    When I extrude, its starts bending my corner, it doesnt hold its position in the corner. It's almost as if im stretching the baseboard. I dont see why its doing this, im pressing E to extrude so it will hold its original position in the corner rather than bend.

    • @bravo123345
      @bravo123345 2 года назад

      I found a solution, I think its because of the sub division modifier I had on ( built the base board by extruding from a cube so I could add the modifier) So once I add loop cuts it holds the corner.

    Any tips how to make this object thick? Solidify mod won't do the job I guess.

    • @Sithhy
      @Sithhy 4 года назад

      I know I'm a bit late, but maybe someone else will benefit from this. If Solidify won't thicken it without going crazy, you probably have a loose vertex/edge somewhere. If it still won't give you the desired effect, you can press Alt + E & extrude along normals (I think that's the name) which will give your mesh the thickness you wish
