Here's the problem. Conceivably, Dave Gahan can now quit Depeche Mode...and make a phalanx of new Depeche Mode songs using AI. Why, and how? As you heard, this AI song is not just copying Dave's voice or the sound of Depeche Mode - but rather, it is also copying much of Martin Gore's lyric writing style. You, as a performer, can now release albums that are uncredited AI songs/albums. Who is to expose you without a sonic watermark? Nobody. Once a track is created, if the date and time is not registered...there is no evidence of who did what or when. There is no evidence of AI generation, or using AI to copy another music artist. I learned this from an interview between Rick Beato and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA (see RUclips). More on that interview later. I brought a similar question to my brother and a DJ that I work with. Again, I asked the following: "What if a musician simply decides to create AI generated sound alike hits of their own past catalogue, and release them as new and original tracks...without AI attribution?" Look at the new Taylor Swift album(s), and how Swift is just seemingly and arbitrarily dropping new album after new album - records that appear oddly emotionless and soulless? Where is she getting the time to do that? Is it possible that she is using AI, and just mass producing new songs via AI? And what of Beyonce, and her nonstop album dumps? It gets worse. Say I want to copy a music producer's style? If I am Def Leppard...and I want to copy the production, arranging, and writing style of Mutt Lange - well, who needs to hire Mutt anymore? How about Shania Twain? She can release new albums that sound like Mutt's past work, without him. If you are Janet Jackson, why rehire Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for millions of dollars...to produce and write for you...when AI can do the same job...at little cost to you...and no royalty splits...while guaranteeing you a faster workflow? Worse still, this is the ultimate studio killer. Why do you need studios anymore for large recording projects? If I am Aerosmith, why hire Diane Warren to pen another hit...when AI can do it faster...while we control and own the publishing? Just set AI to mirror "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing", and you have a new copycat hit. Want a new Michael Jackson album produced by Quincy Jones, and mixed and recorded by Bruce Swedien...complete with songs written by Rod Temperton and Toto...or featuring studio musicians such as Toto, Greg Phillinganes, Louis Johnson? Simply run their works through AI. Look, I am aware of a synth hybrid machine...that was introduced approximately 20 years ago...that worked similarly to AI. This device was used to target hit songs, by creating sound alike songs. Said invention was employed by record labels. I know this, because I know a producer who had such a device. I have since forgotten the name of the machine, but I do recall that the name began with the letter "M". AI has now gone lightyears past that technology, as it not only imitates songwriting and arranging styles...but it also imitates and delivers fully recorded, mixed, and mastered songs...complete with finished lyrics and vocals. At least, that is my understanding of the process - thanks to Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA having sat down with Rick Beato...for an interview on AI. He informed Beato that an AI company gave him a real-time demonstration of the technology. He indicated the tech is more powerful than already publicly known, and I think I recall him making mention of a year timeline...and what it could do by the end of that timespan? Ulvaeus indicated that the AI company entered ABBA's name, and Frank Sinatra, and a few other celebrity names (I believe Elvis is one of those names)...and the AI perfectly and near instantly replicated an ABBA sound alike song...featuring the guest vocal of the other celebrities. I would assume by Björn Ulvaeus' description of the process, that the song was created...complete with mixed and mastered tracks. I think Ulvaeus also indicted that ABBA song sound alikes...were created in multiples during the same AI demonstration session. Ulvaeus was left in shock, as the quality was spectacular. BTW, I was online 2 weeks ago and discovered an AI version of Simon and Garfunkel performing "Baby's Got Back". There is also a AI cleaned up/denoised...and track separated version of The Beatles' live performance of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (see RUclips for both).
Hello Sir, I can not find this song "Like a mystery" on RUclips, which was done in the Depeche Mode sound and Dave Gahan voice imitation which is from your above "Depeche Mode New A.I. Song REACTION!!" video . Would you be so kind to share the link what you got from on of your subscriber please? Btw here is another great DM AI song ruclips.net/video/NUILZPfapVs/видео.html
It was wild and highly entertaining to watch you react. I had so many people link your video to me. (thanks to those folks btw!) I've seen your "top 10 most disliked DM songs" video and I was expecting the song to be BLUDGEONED! But I'm glad you enjoyed at least a little bit of it! My favorite parts of the song are the little subtle details. Like the way he (or should we say "it") sings "I'm" at 2:52. How does AI figure to do such things!? Crazy! I also like the very subtle percussions at 4:38 and it was kind of cool that you actually closed your eyes at that spot as well. I also like the last sung portion (although we still haven't figure out what the heck he's singing in all of it, but I think it was because I assigned that portion to be "instrumental" and it just crammed some weird gibberish in there).
You currently have a chat interface which usually allows you to prompt for the styles and moods i.e. "midtempo gothic melancholic sultry synthphop, raspy male vocalist, keyboard synthesizer, trumpet exciter" and additionally either let an AI write the lyrics for you or enter your own lyrics and add things like [Keyboard Intro], Interludes Choruses, Bridge, etc. to guide the AI. The control is far from perfect and often you really have to rely on ear, your own taste and simple repetition to find or build a final song out of it. I hope that helped. Personally i STEM the AI tracks, clean em up as best as i can and mix and master them for the final track. :)
for now but ai will also replicate and replace any song and genre style you want written in the next 2 to. 5 years its coming songwritters will be replace by record labels soon as well chatgpt 4.o has a incredible songlyric capability if you have the correct promt now imagine feeding it all the lyrics that has been written since the creation of music its unstoppable.
Not yet, the tech is not advanced enough to model Alan yet, but we're getting there. I will try to remake all the post Alan DM albums in a way as if Alan produced them. ETA for this is probably 2-5 years from now, I think.
The sound, the voice, and the feel are very DM... but I felt two big things were missing: 1) the brilliance of Martin's lyrics that are both very clever and deeply meaningful, and 2) an obvious chorus that really hooks.
The sound is there, but it's like the garden section of a big box store. All the ingredients of a garden are there, but it's not a japanese zen garden until Martin Gore puts it all together. There's no soul.
ai music is in it's infancy we will soon not be able to tell the difference, interesting times, there is another song andrea fryer generated with AI that's also quite good : ruclips.net/video/r5Au3DbYv4g/видео.html&ab_channel=AndreaFryer
OK let's do this. If it was on their last album, you would not even have noticed😂😂😂 They would have played it in their stadiums, and the millions would be sucking it up throwing praise how it's their best material in years
Yes I'm a songwriter and actually thinking of doing that. I hate all the studio stuff and it takes forever. This would cut out a lot of the hard work and would be easy to edit after. Don't know what programme they used but I think you can do it on the new version of Logic 🤷
Thank you very much for doing this. I was one of them who asked you to do so on Facebook. I really enjoyed your reaction which was very close to my initial reaction. 👍
@VaughnGeorge It was slightly off in places with the chorus that came on too suddenly and could have used a breather etc. But overall, the most terrifyingly close version I have heard so far, complete with vocal inflections, Martin's backing, certain lyrical themes and related lexicality. A point to consider is that a lot of AI songs are executed in spurts and there is still a human in the loop on the side of the final product, tweaking and collating into the final arrangement.
Soon we will be able to synthesize the "missing" DM albums from 1988 and 1989, when they were at their artistic and creative peak. Can't wait to hear them.
Exactly. AI is polishing the mediocre stuff. No invention. But the ability to make the average better (more pleasant to the masses) makes it dangerous enough.
DM at first look like easy prey for AI, but the depth, layer upon layer of human experience that DM have lived and evolved through, make them uninterpretable and untouchable. ❤💀🖤💀❤
The lyrics are lame. You can tell there was no human heart in it. AI doesn't know what is good or bad and has no motivation to write about anything - like Stock, Aitken and Waterman back in the day... 😉
Soon someone will put Speak & Spell, A Broken Frame, Construction Time Again… in a program and the machine will spit new albums : The Spell of Speak, the Frame is Broken, Time for Construction etc…. New songs in the same mood and with the same sounds. It will come…
The beginning of the song - the rhythm section is similar to the Freelove Flood edition. The musical part is reminiscent of the melody from the song Newborn
There are AIs trained in music, art, photos, videos, voices, etc., to create music, you use the AI trained for music, you ask it for a dark newwave rhythm, and it will give you several samples, you choose the one you like ( The AI invents because before it listened to thousands and thousands of songs and knows all the genres and how they are composed) then, if you want, you give it a lyric, if you don't have lyrics, you ask chatgpt to invent a lyric about a specific topic, then You put those lyrics to the music AI, and it will give it the chords and there you have a dark newwave song, then, for Dave's voice, you use "deepvoice", which is a voice cloner, where "you change the voice" that the music AI gave you, through Dave's voice, and that's it... you have a song in a matter of minutes...
I was going to insult you but then realize you may be young and all you hear is The Weekend and Drake. Then its a fantastic masterpiece in comparison..otherwise..its really really really really bad.
@@stoneneils That is your coping mechanism. I was there with you. Now I moved on to acceptance. Also remember your favorite artist was hated by the generation before. You can read reviews about how the Beatles didn't qualify as music.
@@laartwork Exactly my point. You confirmed what I said: its not about the music, its about the entire package. AI can't compete with humans because it isn't going to be loved by anyone, its not cute, its not sexy, its not going to appear in the media under various crazy headlines, it won't do interviews, it doesn't have a backstory. I can go all day. The only people who might have to move to acceptance are those who score for films, commericals, etc.
Are you joking? The lyrics make very little sense to me and that's a tell tale sign it AI. Spend more time on RUclips and you will easily encounter an AI made video. See if you can distinguish it from human work. I can.
What? You wouldn't have noticed those lyrics are ridiculously sophomoric and the overall song just much too bland to be released by a professional artist? I'd believe it was a joke demo by them maybe.
The look on Vaughan's face over the course of this song says it all. This "New Life" almost frightfully come to life like that. There was a sort of shock, bemusement , bewilderment at the accuracy of the track in places. Had this emerged as a "real song" that say, was an out-take from some recent album, Id absolutely have bought it as a legit DM song. It is scary astohow real it sounds. For the record, as an actual "song", I like it. Were I told twas a real song, without AI involvement, Id have not overthought it, and said "This is a really good song" to myself.
It's a bit ironic that an A.I. DM song is much less repetitive than "the train is coming, the train is coming" and "no more, no more, no war, no war..." :)
Listening to new songs from Dave forever. Without knowing who did it, where and when. Many hidden masterpieces. They may be forward-looking. This is very exciting
By the way...AI came to "end" the music industry, people will no longer buy music, because they will be able to make it to their liking at home, the amount they want, with the voices they want, on the topics they want. If you want, there are many Michael Jackson songs...and really good songs... ruclips.net/video/0K8S8-XNdjI/видео.html
I don't think DM have much to fear considering where they are in the arc of their career. This isn't like Negativeland putting out an album called "U2" at the height of Joshua Tree hysteria. The depressing reality that awaits us isn't the "fake" versions of our favorite acts, it the replacement of human musicians. The "average" Top 40 music consumer won't care that an algorithm creates the tunes played over the stereo system while they shop. I think real musicians will always make music and the industry is in such a state that I don't it will necessarily make it harder to earn a living. It's already next to impossible. I place the lion's share of my concern in what the future of visual entertainment might become under the auspices of AI. If a media company can make a successful film without actors and writers, why wouldn't they? If a performance can be "rendered" from well of algorithmic likenesses, and a script produced from a sophisticated chatbot in under a half-hour, why wouldn't a studio executive greenlight that project? Do we really think that AI couldn't churn out something at least as competent as a Fast and the Furious movie?
I sang a song using george michaels voice, quite frankly I kind teared up a bit....I have always loved to sing on my songs and covers but while I sing on key I just wasnt blessed with a pleasing sounding voice....so when I used George michaels voice and heard how it turned my voice into that golden sounding tenor...how coiuld I not get a bit misty eyed. AI's possibilities are endless
I liked it (and "Digital Tears Never Dry" has moments too). It obviously means DM (or any composer) have to raise their A-game a bit to not repeat themselves and grow in directions both true to their past but different from what an AI can anticipate. I liked the synthetic harmonica orchestration in this song. If no other DM song uses harmonicas that way, it might have been selected randomly from a list of "musical effects" not noticed, in the DM corpus, to create an "innovation" (I'm just WAGging here; surely DM has used harmonicas before?). It's important to note that what the AI did isn't really composing; it's generalizing from a known corpus of work by some method (and the voice modeling, whatever it is, is pretty amazing). When Mozart composed, he had to do the same kind of thing as the AI, but Mozart only had DIFFERENT composers to generalize from (e.g., Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Correlli), and he was also TRYING TO BE DIFFERENT from them (while recognizing his debt to them). The AI doesn't work this way. BTW, David Cope has some albums, where he tries to create (algorithmically?) "new" compositions from "great" composers, e.g. Mozart. Some of it sounds like plagiarism; some of it sounds ok. What I heard with this DM-esque song compared very well with that. Finally, DM needs to chime in as to what they think (and let us know if they get a residual from this, as it is definitely a derivative work).
Some great comments VG. I listened to a Nitzer Ebb track recently with Daves vocals in AI. I think it was I Am Undone. I have to say it sounded excellent - would be interesting to AI Daves vocals on some other Nitzer Ebb tracks or even MG sung songs. What do you think?
My first question is who owns the song? Would Depeche Mode be able to use this as a basis to improve the song and not be sued? Would DM consider making it better? I think there are some elements missing, there's not enough echo, vocals are missing an edge. This could be a hit and if DM took it on as a base would it just be considered a tool just like a synth was back in the day or the discovery of the click by Georgio?
I've been using Udio for several weeks, not instructed it to imitate any particular vocalists, and you end up with all sorts, imitations of Bowie, Gabriel, Bjork, Owl City... fun, but crazy
I agree Vaughn I find that very scary and am concerned about the future based on how AI is developing so rapidly. I thought it was very Depeche Mode like.
Yeah but so are a million depeche mode cover bands with their own tracks. Nobody cares. Its not depeche mode. You guys are totally missing out on the celebrity part. If Depeche Mode wasn't famous 80s band but came out last month we wouldn't like their music nearly as much. Its about the era, the moment, the culture, the band's image, the people in it..its not Taylor Swift can do a Madonna song and make it equally as popular or vice-versa. Pop music is a lot more than about the song...and that is why its going downhill. Its much more profitable to nurture one Bieber than sit around and relase 100 tracks on spotify with no artist to back it up in interviews, videos, concerts etc.
A bit of another perspective here…..this is still kind of real because it comes out of something real. It’s born of DMs body of work if you will. It’s generating a pretty good song out of it. It’s interesting but without DM this couldn’t exist so it’s still them in a way.
Genuinely surprised. Agree it has that Spirit album sound, and melodically the vocals sound like something Martin would write, but lyrically clearly not if the lyrics changed to something Martin was more accustomed to writing, I would be fooled into thinking that this was an actual Depeche Mode track.
I've read the original description of the video and saw kind of like a back of the scenes procces of her (the girl that made the "song") but now her account got deleated, and with it all the explanation procces. For what I saw, I can say it was 20% AI just generating samples and 80% this woman typing different key words to nail the DM style, adjusting the vocals, etc. I really dont know her, but she could explain more in depth the development procces
Hey romeo and thanks for explaining this. Actually the prompting was 0.00% because all I did was write in "Depeche Mode" as a prompt, then Udio replaced the band name with keywords that describe the genre of music. About 1% of the time went to getting the initial 33s clip. After that, the rest of the time went to generating the additional chunks of the song. In total, there were 6 chunks. So for each of those I had to generate dozens of variations until I found ones that I liked.
This sounds to me like a Soulsavers track. I actually like it 😁 I went looking for this song and only found a 1-minute version on TikTok looks like there was a copy on RUclips, but the channel was terminated.
Without any context of where is was sourced and if you disregard the images and just listen to the AI version with the expectation that "this is a new DM song" it clearly captures the mood of DM and is believable with the current evolution of AI processing. Scary future for music production.
I remember back around the release of Exciter I was presented to a song called Ponytail Girl - I honestly thought it was Martin singing a new unreleased song from the album or some secret B-side track.
Fun fact: I know the guy who made that song (Color Theory) and he told me that he once got into an argument with someone who claimed they knew “for a fact” that that was Martin Gore singing. Just wouldn’t take “I know it’s not Martin because it’s ME singing” for an answer.
I agree with you Vaughn, it is scary and shocking. I like this track in general, but I don’t hear there something like human breath. As Alan Wilder said: “I like electronics, but I like a human being as well” (I am paraphrasing). In the other hand I like AI “virtual collaboration” of Dave Gahan and Alan Wilder “I am Undone” (originally by Nitzer Ebb) and “Polaroid”. I would like to say I don’t like it, because it’s artifical, but I do. Some DM fans may insult me for that, but I think these two tracks could be a kind of inspiration for DM, because it sounds more Depeche and much better than… ehm, OK, that’s all I have to say 😅
Very interesting. To be honest I see this in two ways. As an artist this kind of thing lowers the barriers to entry and diminishes the value in the creators sound and work, but then again, hasn't every step forward with music or any other art form done the same thing? Plus doesn't this open up opportunities for artists too? And this tech within a year or so will be indistinguishable. i can hear labels now thinking about the concept of artists licencing their sound to them so they can just create albums automatically, and pay the original artists a kicker? With labels controlling catalogues, they can AI clone from the stems and voila... A new Elvis or Beatles album. If the financial mechanisms can be worked out regarding rights etc, it's an interesting new world out there in my opinion. As you say, terrifying. But then, kinda exciting too.
My original channel was removed by RUclips. I have a new channel now where I have reuploaded this song (and others). Look for "Like a Mystery". (I did switch the graphics this time to play it safe)
@@przemekkulesza3242 well I liked violator sofad (live) and ultra … I just thought spirit delta machine and exciter were lack lustre even playing the Angel and sounds of the universe were good
Listening to this AI-generated Depeche Mode song is like glimpsing into a parallel universe where the band effortlessly churns out albums at lightning speed! It's fascinating how AI can pick up on the formula and offer a starting point for creativity. Yet, as much as it's a tool for acceleration, it also highlights the irreplaceable role of human musicians and editors. After all, crafting a masterpiece requires technical prowess and style, taste, and judgment cultivated over time. This track may lack the complexity of later Depeche Mode albums, like the intricate layers in 'Memento Mori', but it reminds us of AI's potential to assist and challenge our creative process. Disclaimer: This comment is ChatGPT generated.
This is SIMILAR to DM… BUT! It's missing the heart & soul of both Martin AND Dave… AI can MIMIC, but it IS NOT any kind of substitute. I am very against AI generated lyrics, music, & it’s even creepier to hear Dave sound soulless… Dave’s voice moves me beyond anything I can explain & this AI voice DID NOT move me! And the lyrics were lame & flat without Martin… I don't hate it…. It creeps me out… it's like catching sight of someone in a mirror only to find out there is nobody but you in the reflection. Too creepy for me.
I reckon it’s really cool. Imagine the fun you could have with depeche mode performing with a whole heap of different artists and styles . Imagine miles Davis on keyboard or van Halen influencing the percussion . Even better imagine competent musicians playing around and redefining forgotten tracks for a new era .
So many people have asked me to upload this and the other DM AI songs to Spotify but I don't want to as I believe you can't opt out of monetization in that platform. I don't want to monetize these songs as I feel it would be utterly unethical. I have uploaded them to SoundCloud though (but obviously will not be monetizing them there either).
Me likes it. Impressive, seems to have many different DM sounds. It has got that "hook" missing from current DM albums. Damn, now that song is stuck in my head.
Dave's main function is to bring the front man energy and the amazing voice. The AI version checks the second box, but could never check the first one... front man stuff can only be done by a human. Martin's function is the creative songwriting (music and lyrics), and AI isn't able to do either of those... because (IMO) those require humanity as well.
It has a forgettable instrumental and the voice, despite reminding a lot the Dave's style, is monotonous in terms of melodic variation. However, it's really terrifying because we can be easily faked by these "recordings" and the tendency points to a technologic improvement, so this kind of absurd will be even more common and it's gonna be really hard to identify its fake aura
Curious, 2 days I prompt a Post Punk / Gotic song on Sunp and the resutlt come with a Dave Gaham vocal and DM style, all without mentioned DM in the prompt. The Suno Ai name it Mirror Image. It's almost curious how this Ai use the "Echoe" word in lyrics, it's like to regonize it as "made with Suno/Udio AI"
I don't understand the Spirit negativity...I like that album. This is total shit. You can tell these are not Martin lyrics. The sound is too plastic. For the non-fan it may be close...for the fan though...no way...
Indeed! It's not good . The scary thing is that as A.I. Improves , it's going to be really scary to see what develops. As an artist development coach , I am not encouraging this use of A.I. because it goes against everything I believe in. There is no "Spirit negativity" here. There is just my honest opinion - It's my least favourite DM album but you are of course perfectly entitled to enjoy it. My feelings on it are not "correct" , it's just my honest opinion. It's important for me to be honest and not be politically correct in an attempt to please everyone. Enough said. VG 😎🎹👍
@@VaughnGeorge Putting AI aside, just curious to know your thoughts on tribute bands that aim to look and sound as close to DM as possible. Most of these bands do covers, but I would imagine some of them also create new songs of their own that sound exactly like they would be a new DM song. Do you see any problem with these kinds of bands?
Great video, as always, VG. There's nothing intrinsically "wrong" with the traditional way to make electro music. One still had to WRITE the songs, for example, where would DM be without Martin Gore's song-writing? A.I. is a completely different level of "cheating", if that's the right word.
The song was generated by Andrea Fryer. She was very transparent about the process, described in detail how she got Udio to yield this result. Unfortunately, they stomped all of her channels shortly after. She has posted about this. It's unclear why RUclips came for her. It prob wasn't because of the DM AI songs that she posted. If you want more Depeche Mode from Udio, click here: :) ruclips.net/video/7NudLO8XDhE/видео.html
Fascinating and rather scary. I was impressed. If somebody did some better mastering/mixing, it would be even more impressive. The voice(s) likeliness is scary! Though you hate reaction videos, I really like the way you did it. It is true to you, your experience in DM, the way you speak freely - and for me, that is one of the things I like about our channel. Great post - again. Idea: YOU do the prompting, live, and see what you can get out of a lyrics and music AI. I am not sure if it is possible, but could be interesting. Another idea: How would you master it, to make it better? (You probably cannot get the stems, but - could be interesting!)
Scary how they mimicked Dave’s voice, and certain elements were very DM. Lyrics and other elements missing. But considering how early AI is in its infancy it’s truly terrifying and disastrous on so many levels
The lyrics were horrible. It had a "sound" like DM, but with horrible lyrics, if id heard this without knowing, I'm thinking i would have thought this is a bad DM song with lame lyrics like that.
Well. This is for sure a great A.I. Demo for a possible real Depeche Mode song. So i wonder what would happen if Martin would rewrite the lyrics and record this with Dave. But i doubt they would as they would probably both not feel 100% ok with that as it would really be entirely their own thing.

Here's the problem. Conceivably, Dave Gahan can now quit Depeche Mode...and make a phalanx of new Depeche Mode songs using AI. Why, and how?
This one is better

I asked ‘Google Gemini’ to write a song in the style of Morrissey, and it refused, citing Morrisseys ‘Racism’!!! So, even AI is cancelling people too.
Are you serious? OMG, the machines are going WOKE?? Not good!! VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge maybe the next terminator movie could be about a Woke Cyborg…. Going around cancelling all in its way!…. The worlds gone made mate😀
@@VaughnGeorge They are not going woke, they are learned by woke.
Good for Morrissey...nobody needs a woke AI Version.
Your story smells 💩
You can steal their voices and sounds but you cannot replicate their songwriting talent.
for now but ai will also replicate and replace any song and genre style you want written in the next 2 to. 5 years its coming songwritters will be replace by record labels soon as well chatgpt 4.o has a incredible songlyric capability if you have the correct promt now imagine feeding it all the lyrics that has been written since the creation of music its unstoppable.
it was a lazy try, udio can get better songs, guess the operator didnt show his best and kept the captured vocals for something else
You can input your own lyrics sooo... yeah. RIP
That's just around the corner.. Ai can also evolve the lyrics beyond its original creator - in the same manor the original creator would have.
Anyone can write better songs than any released on Spirit
Is there an A.I. Alan Wilder that could really take this to the next level?
Hahaha! Imagine that!! VG :-)
Not yet, the tech is not advanced enough to model Alan yet, but we're getting there. I will try to remake all the post Alan DM albums in a way as if Alan produced them. ETA for this is probably 2-5 years from now, I think.
😂😂😂
Oh lord! ❤
That would actually be awesome!
The scary thing is the synth hook was still playing in my head when I went off to do something after watching this.
The sound, the voice, and the feel are very DM... but I felt two big things were missing: 1) the brilliance of Martin's lyrics that are both very clever and deeply meaningful, and 2) an obvious chorus that really hooks.
💯
The last time Martin truly cared about lyrics was on Sounds of the Universe
Seems to me like Dave's lyrics
😻
You are so so right! ❤
Martin would never write garbage lyrics like this!
Exactly!
True, but it wasnt bad at all, better than what Martin wrote for the entire Spirit Album...
If only...
Dave Gahan would.
No eay! Come on man Dave Gahan wrote a lot of good songs. Have you ever heard of suffer well ? kingdom? Broken?
The sound is there, but it's like the garden section of a big box store. All the ingredients of a garden are there, but it's not a japanese zen garden until Martin Gore puts it all together. There's no soul.
Spot on!
exactly. the lyrics on this AI track completely missed the mark. too generic and cold to be Martin's
ai music is in it's infancy we will soon not be able to tell the difference, interesting times, there is another song andrea fryer generated with AI that's also quite good : ruclips.net/video/r5Au3DbYv4g/видео.html&ab_channel=AndreaFryer
OK let's do this. If it was on their last album, you would not even have noticed😂😂😂 They would have played it in their stadiums, and the millions would be sucking it up throwing praise how it's their best material in years
Facts
Well, it's like hearing the M1 piano sample for the first time in 1990 and thinking "this sounds so real!"
That's a very accurate description! Yes! VG
So well said!
I was there that day! 🤣
Prior to that, it was selecting Digital Native Dance on the D50 .
@@nigelcarrenI regret selling my D50. Such a powerhouse synth and could create almost any sound. The Soundtrack was my favourite!
If Depeche Mode did a cover of this and enhanced it with some new ideas, it could be a good template for a new song.
They would have to change it significantly to be a really good song. Just IMO of course...
Why would they need to. They may as well take one of their friends's songs.
Yes I'm a songwriter and actually thinking of doing that. I hate all the studio stuff and it takes forever. This would cut out a lot of the hard work and would be easy to edit after.
Don't know what programme they used but I think you can do it on the new version of Logic 🤷
This _could be_ the way…
Thank you very much for doing this. I was one of them who asked you to do so on Facebook. I really enjoyed your reaction which was very close to my initial reaction. 👍
Hello Sir!! You are very welcome! YEs it was initially quite confusing. I will need to listen to it again. t really caught me off guard! VG :-)
Can't wait to hear them.
missing albums?
Sounds like fun!
Just another ordinary soup, no sharpness, no contrast, no soul, and most important, no Gorism!
Wow, I'm actually pretty impressed with it! We need AI Depeche Mode from the Violator era. Great video Vaughn!
....."well it sounds better than anything on the Spirit album"....hahaha relentless Vaughn!
Glad you liked that!! VG :-) :-)
I sounds like the algorithm was fed Policy Of Truth combined with Spirit.
Sounds more like a mix of PTA and Spirit. I can hear a bit of Newborn in he second half.
A.I. and Alan Wilder walk into a bar ...
Soon someone will put Speak & Spell, A Broken Frame, Construction Time Again… in a program and the machine will spit new albums : The Spell of Speak, the Frame is Broken, Time for Construction etc…. New songs in the same mood and with the same sounds. It will come…
Y brindo por eso.
Masses for the Music.
This song is good ......realy good
I was going to insult you but then realize you may be young and all you hear is The Weekend and Drake.
Holy crap. If I wasn't told it was AI generated, I'm not sure that I would have ever figured it out.
The lyrics suck! One long verse leading into one partial chorus? Too easy to call it out as AI. The human race and mind is quickly deteriorating!
Exactly! Well said - but the 'fans' think otherwise😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Ok then this ruclips.net/video/G1a14mLmXL8/видео.htmlsi=FH-l_f-0zpEMEdBL
The look on Vaughan's face over the course of this song says it all. This "New Life" almost frightfully come to life like that. There was a sort of shock, bemusement , bewilderment at the accuracy of the track in places. Had this emerged as a "real song" that say, was an out-take from some recent album, Id absolutely have bought it as a legit DM song. It is scary astohow real it sounds. For the record, as an actual "song", I like it. Were I told twas a real song, without AI involvement, Id have not overthought it, and said "This is a really good song" to myself.
What a fun, yet creepy experiment.
So scary to hear an AI song that sounds so much like DM and Dave’s voice is perfectly imitated! That’s very creepy 😅
Sounds like De/Vision got Dave to sing on one of their songs.
Can't wait, Vaughn! Your opinion usually merges mine:))) Thank you for your work! Much appreciated 👍🌹😎🎀🖤
You are very welcome and thank you for your support!! VG :-)
It's good & I like it. Simply.
Where's the bridge?!!
AI must not know Depeche Mode bridges are legendary.
No war, no war, no war
No more, no more, no more, no more.......
These AI songs have to be extended before you create them. Some only create songs about two minutes then they cut off.
Freaky , if I'd heard that on the airwaves and not known it was AI, I'd have honestly thought that was a new release.
I like it, Very dark and synthy, it's probably Alan secretly making a comeback.
Evil Mirror Universe Depeche Mode
Finally, DM needs to chime in as to what they think (and let us know if they get a residual from this, as it is definitely a derivative work).
now A.I. should do some songs in the style of the Violator / SOFD era and plan a tour with avatars and call it "a can of worms has been opened here"
I like this. The one thing that would make me suspicious if I didn't know it was AI are the dodgy lyrics... can't imagine MLG writing them
Some great comments VG. I listened to a Nitzer Ebb track recently with Daves vocals in AI. I think it was I Am Undone.
I have to say it sounded excellent - would be interesting to AI Daves vocals on some other Nitzer Ebb tracks or even MG sung songs. What do you think?
This is gen 1, believe me. The lyrics, beat and all will be 10 times better in just a year or two
My first question is who owns the song? Would Depeche Mode be able to use this as a basis to improve the song and not be sued? Would DM consider making it better? I think there are some elements missing, there's not enough echo, vocals are missing an edge. This could be a hit and if DM took it on as a base would it just be considered a tool just like a synth was back in the day or the discovery of the click by Georgio?
I've been using Udio for several weeks, not instructed it to imitate any particular vocalists, and you end up with all sorts, imitations of Bowie, Gabriel, Bjork, Owl City... fun, but crazy
Yep! I've gotten Peter Murphy, Bernard Sumner, Siouxsie Sioux etc. I can't understand how they are able to release software like this!
still better than many songs since ultra
Absolutely.
Sadly yes.
Exactly! In a sense it is real DM, it is made based on DM and the source algorithm is based solely on DM, so it is DM for me.....
I really dont know her, but she could explain more in depth the development procces
just try for yourself it's free, it's called udio, you can also look other DM style songs andrea fryer generated on a new channel she re-created
Astounding but yes, as you said, frightening at the same time
You´re absolutelly right... It really SOUNDS LIKE Depeche Mode but it´s without SOUL, it´s just an algorithm... Good tool and servant, bad master ;-)
Well said!! VG:-)
The lyrics are reminiscent of the AI comments that have started appearing on the Tube, with them panty clad thumbnails.
This sounds to me like a Soulsavers track. I actually like it 😁 I went looking for this song and only found a 1-minute version on TikTok looks like there was a copy on RUclips, but the channel was terminated.
I can see 4:40, that you are seriously fascinated by it and you like this part ;-)
Without any context of where is was sourced and if you disregard the images and just listen to the AI version with the expectation that "this is a new DM song" it clearly captures the mood of DM and is believable with the current evolution of AI processing. Scary future for music production.
Wow literally , feel it.
Listen to the AI Dave Gahan and Alan Wilder I Am Undone...I love that one😀
Reminds me when in the film "Alien", the new creature was born.
@@interface2x Hah, that's funny :-D I can definitely see that happening.
Well explained!! VG🙂
I can relate 100% to your feelings and thoughts about this track.
AI is polishing the mediocre stuff. No invention. But the ability to make the average better (more pleasant to the masses) makes it dangerous enough.
This was very interesting! Where may we see the original video?
My original channel was removed by RUclips. I have a new channel now where I have reuploaded this song (and others). Look for "Like a Mystery". (I did switch the graphics this time to play it safe)
I wonder what Depeche Mode thinks about this scary stuff, despite my love for them.🤔
"Well, it sounds better than anything on the Spirit album.' 😀 Brutal! 😉
Its true, its far better than anything on Spirit Album... the AI song is actually good...

Why does it show images of Steve Buscemi? 🙂
hahaha yeah!! Some have also said it looks like Jeff Goldblum!! VG 🙂
I watched this video on the exact 35th anniversary of the release of Counterfeit
Photos! Lovely !
The instrumentation and production was spot on.
When Martin picked up that miserable and badly played guitar Depeche started to suck and have ever since.
it would be interesting if they sang it live somewhere on TV 😃
"That's not music!" "Bruh, I prompted it."
Excellent song. On Spotify?
That Dave artwork was so evil looking. Ick.
It’s gross and repulsive. Agree.
Where can I listen to this ? I can’t find it anywhere?
On my new channel (the old one was removed).
In Scotland it might be called Depish Mode
The song was generated by Andrea Fryer. She was very transparent about the process, described in detail how she got Udio to yield this result. Unfortunately, they stomped all of her channels shortly after. She has posted about this. It's unclear why RUclips came for her. It prob wasn't because of the DM AI songs that she posted. Hi Vaughn - I liked it!
Same here 😎😁🎶
Fascinating and rather scary.
Hello my friend ! Thank you for your kind words and brilliant suggestions !! I appreciate that!! VG :-)
Scary how they mimicked Dave’s voice, and certain elements were very DM. Lyrics and other elements missing. But considering how early AI is in its infancy it’s truly terrifying and disastrous on so many levels
Apart from the lyrics this was better than 95 % of what DM did in the past 15 years.
Idk man, I thought the new album was pretty good
The lyrics were horrible. It had a "sound" like DM, but with horrible lyrics, if id heard this without knowing, I'm thinking i would have thought this is a bad DM song with lame lyrics like that.
VIELEN LIEBEN DANK...FRIEDEN und FREIHEIT...
Well. This is for sure a great A.I. Demo for a possible real Depeche Mode song. So i wonder what would happen if Martin would rewrite the lyrics and record this with Dave. But i doubt they would as they would probably both not feel 100% ok with that as it would really be entirely their own thing.
Awesome
What is it called when
