Converting Firewood Shelter into Tiny Cabin to Survive Winter - Walls 3.0┃EP12┃Alone Off Grid Alaska

  • In this episode I take on the challenge of converting my short lived firewood shelter into a tiny cabin so I can survive the Alaskan winter! I finish stick framing my last wall and sheath the cabin to protect it from the elements, we see the first snow of the season, and spend the whole episode trying not to lose a finger 😂

If you're new here, my name is Sean Paul!
I sold everything I owned and drove to Alaska. I came with my dog, my cat, and a dream to create an off grid sanctuary on 5 acres of Alaskan wilderness! The challenge is, I have zero experience and I’m just a dreamer with a RUclips subscription! I can only imagine the journey ahead...I hope you stick around, and welcome, to Gettin' Off Grid!

Awesome progress this week, Sean Paul! During anytime this winter you need a break from the outdoors and want to warm up your bones, my husband and I live in anchorage. We have a spare bedroom for you and your sweet babies. Don’t be afraid to reach out. We are invested in you and your success here in off grid Alaska. I moved away in my 20’s to the east cost and spent 4yrs away from home, so I understand your feelings of missing home and your people. And I felt a world away from everyone here. I learned so much while I was away. And once I finally moved back, it gave me this appreciation for this place I call home. I resonate with your story- so from us to you, whenever you need a warm home cooked meal- we are here. I love your slow down pace attitude and taking in all the moments. You’ll get to all your goals in due time. You started from nothing and now you have yourself 2 structures! I’d say that’s progress to be proud of. Keep on reaching your goals. I’ll be here watching every upload to support. ❤

I went from an area of no snow to an area with snow with two dogs. Noticed the fur on their foot pads and legs would clump with the snow. This prompted me to obtain “paw balm” for booth dogs and winter boots for them as well. A good portion of your life is going to be soul searching and deciding whom you want to be…. Assholes have already decided who they are ignore them, do you. Be thankful to God for all blessings. You will be alright.

You have a beautiful landscape to get lost in and your awareness of how you feel. Anxiety and depression are really hard to deal with in life. Keep a daily journal of those surroundings and now that all the days that you feel blue are just a reminder that better days are coming. I hope this makes sense to you. I personally know how it feels to be challenged with mental heath. Stay busy and know you’re not alone.

Don't worry about what everyone thinks. It's not their life. It's yours. I'm so used to RUclipsrs ordering us to "like comment and subscribe", without ever saying please or thank you... Or even worse, the ones who try to fling a guilt trip on the 50 percent of viewers who are not subscribed... Maybe I'm old school, but I appreciate the appreciators. Cut the spruce further away from the cabin first while there isn’t any snow yet, then when the snow gets deep cut the trees closer to the cabin. you can most likely cut what you need for the winter in a couple days. Probably going to need a snowmobile at some point if you haven’t thought about that yet. We get a lot of snow here.. Also probably going to want to change the oil in your generator to the cold weather oil.

Don’t listen to the trolls. Ignore them they eventually go away. My only advice (coming from a person who has built a cabin) prioritize what needs done. Walls, windows and doors, vapor barrier, insulation (walls, roof, and floor), and then inner walls and ceiling, then how your going to heat your cabin. That little wood burner might work in that small cabin. Only drawback is that they are thin and flimsy which allows carbon monoxide to come out. But you got this friend!

Looks good and if your swinging hammers , eventually you make mistakes , think anyone who has used a hammer has hit a finger a time or two , you learn , also for winter snow , I’d suggest if you have time make a alittle shelter /roof for you wood to keep snow off it event if you just use trees for frame and tarp to cover it , if no time well just covering with a tarp will help keep wood dry and snow free , also for shovels don’t get big snow shovels get the smaller ones as you will move snow faster and easier with a small shovel , big snow shovels are only good on concrete and for light snow falls and a square metal shovel , works great also , it’s what I use in Canada smaller snow shovel and metal square shovels , the small metal ones are good to have in you truck if you get stuck a big snow shovel is useless to shovel under your truck , look forward to next video ! I’m a person that never asks for help and like to do things myself so I understand you ,

RIP sliding wall you will always be in our hearts!
Truly love your videos! Your personality is perfect for making videos like these! I hope that when you get your cabin done, you could go down and visit your family! Maybe you could fly down to Florida for Christmas! It would perhaps give you great energy and inspiration for the new year 😊

Just a reminder to always have a fire extinguisher on hand! Wild Homestead is a ytube channel that does same thing as you and his tent caught fire and burned everything down!
