Jason is my favorite make skater, but still, he’s been to an olympics in 2014, and he has no chance to medal at the olympics. It seems strange they wouldn’t choose Ila over him. Vincent was a mess, but when he’s on, he can beat the world champion and has a chance to medal at the olympics. Ila should be going to the olympics, he’s the future of the sport and rightfully earned a spot.

I love Jason but he won't make the top 7. but the selection was based on the performance over the season not on the US nationals alone. Still, Ilia would have been in the final group for the FS at the Olympics with this program and had a shot at bronze at least, if other skaters faltered. Vincent has a clear shot at a medal if he can control his nerves. I hope they get him a sports psychologist before the games.

Successfully demonstrating 4Lutz, 4S&4T with technical skills & consistency at his senior debut, Lila, even at 17 years of age, deserves his chance of going Beijing Olympic. By scrutinizing their skating in the recent days yet with strategy, Nathan, Vincent & Lila should be selected aiming to seize the opportunity of showing on podium.

Folks, it's not 2001 anymore. Sure, 20+ years ago quads were relatively new for the men, and you could still beat a one-quad program with artistic triples. But it's 2022 now. EVERY man who wants to see a podium is expected to land 2-3 quads in the long program and one in the short. Jason can barely do one quad, sometimes. Yeah, he's got the experience and body of work, but what will that accomplish for Jason? 6-7 even more perfect and artistic triples, AGAIN? Look, Jason's career dead-ended five years ago as other men out-quaded him. But Malinin has a lot of room to develop and even eventually surpass Nathan. Malinin _deserves_ that international senior experience. I'd rather see Ilia go splat in Beijing and then use that experience to KILL IT in 2026, than to watch Jason skate yet another exhibition program.

This is why I respect team Russia because they put personality aside and pick the best/most likely to medal. I like Jason he is my favorite US male skater but I don't think he should be on the Olympics team over Ilia. He doesn't have a quad and cannot help the team, in the team event.

  • @ssaverance1828

I figure they chose Jason because he has more experience in international competitions, but the fact is pretty obvious that ilia is the stronger skater, he brings style and technique to the table, especially on the lutz, which I think Jason’s technique consistently questionable on. Strategically, it would have made more sense to send ilia because he has a greater chance of winning a medal. Is he at least going to 4 continents?

    • @mr.d4ve
      @mr.d4ve 2 года назад +3

He’s 1st alternate so the USFS is not risking it, rightfully so. The Olympics are just 2 weeks after so why bring him to another competition and risk him peaking too early and/or catching COVID? He needs to stay focused on the Olympics because quite frankly, he still has a shot as any of the 3 olympians could catch COVID between now and the actual Olympics (hopefully not but it’s a possibility). If we don’t see him at the Olympics, I hope he gets a shot at Worlds.

Skated cleaner, but Nathan had higher base value more difficult quad combos in the second half, and incredible consistency, Almost always getting small mistakes out of the way early in the season after peaking too soon in the last Olympic year, and a three time world champ (likely 4 time had 2020 not been cancelled-also sad for Kostornaia), so with his consistency and his international results undefeated since the Olympics until skate America thankfully leading to changed programs, his scores will be higher than Ilia’s due to the increased difficulty, base value and quality of his jumps, consistency and cool head in competition (unlike Vincent who is a disaster bound to happen again) and his combined international competition results, world standing and senior level PCS while Ilia has never competed senior until this Nationals, and while he won his jr Grand Prix events and qualified to the final, so did all the other three senior men (Nathan Vincent and Jason) which are some of the selection criteria looking at overall results over the last quad at major comps (which I think should leave Vincent off the team with his Nats performance and history mopping the ice with his butt and choking when it really counts, like not even qualifying the free skate at last year worlds, while,Jason has insane quality, top ten placements and best PCS and earned the third mens spot) and his components have thus far internationally been on par with juniors (though he is a gorgeous skater) partly because he had mistakes on the junior grand prix and little experience in main start competitions. I almost feel as though they should have sent him to senior Grand Prix and. Ha;ledgers so he could at least build a senior body of work and show how he handles major senior international competitions-because he learned quads over 2 Covid years and the quality of his skating and artistry would be made more sense for them to give him senior Grand Prix assignments to give him international experience and competitive portfolio and test his consistency and stability in major comps before nationals. The US is the worst at developing new talent. Had the assigned him senior grand prixs, then would have set him up nicely similar to Alina Zagitova in 2018 by ensuring she had challenger events, Japan Open, grand prixs with success qualifying her to the final where she won, euros where she won and finally the Olympics. Granted, she had won all jrgp’s and major junior titles the year prior whereas I believe this is ilia’s second competitive season as a junior competing, an until this year had minimal, success of one challenger series bronzeso he didn’t really have the successes of winning a title at jr GP, jrGPF and jr worlds until this season, finishing 16th at last junior worlds and no final, , but he won jrGP qualifier for the final this season, having learned three quads with five total, unfortunately making errors on both quads the first jrGP and one of the 2 in the second, but still good enough to win the jr gp’s and qualify to the final. The US just did not play their cards right with this kid and develop and utilize their young talent before their growth spurts or injuries due to intensity of training and physically taxing programs due to quads (and for Alina without quads due to her jumps getting bonuses in second half and her lutz loop in second half racking up the same points as a quad would give, and the difficulty level on par with difficulty of quads due to how insanely difficult and physically taxing that program was and how hard training and competing the way they do in practice and competitive. Wore out her knees). Ilia is still quite slender and growing a bit delayed, but his super slender body and weight, makes rotating his quads effortless right now, so why not maximize medal potential or high placement while they come easy to him because combined with his artistry and skating skills if he holds up under Olympic pressure as his literal first international senior competition, I think he has more potential to challenge for a spot with the best than inconsistent, under rotations and falling apart under pressure, non world free skate qualifying Vincent Zhou. I don’t think it should have been between Jason and Ilia, but Vincent and Ilia, with Ilia clearly the right choice, because Jason Brown finished top ten at World’s securing the third men’s spot, also being consistent and reliable with unrivaled quality of elements and artistry-like a master class in spins, foot work, flexibility, musicality, performance quality and dedication from start to finish even if he makes a mistake-his quality GOE’s allows him to compete with quads jumpers and he feels his performances and emotes into the top row. I believe he earned it over Vincent and Jason, and Jason should have placed above Vincent as well. He is known for choking when it counts and his free skate is empty and unmemorable without quads and clean skate while Ilia has youth, minimal competition range, but gorgeous technique, beautiful quads and air position, great artistry and skating skills and youthful attitude of having nothing to lose at this point-which is what I think helped Alina Zagitova at euros and Olympics-she wasn’t weighted down with heavy titles yet or intrusive, mean-spirited media meant to steal her joy and undercut her achievements, like she had at Worlds that year with everyone pandering to Zhenya and tearing a 15 year old to shreds. I don’t see that happening to Ilia, but I can see him adding a youthful optimism and gorgeous skating to an underperforming,in US team (aside from men and dance). That would be a perfect combination-Jason brings the master class skating and artistry PCS, Nathan brings the high scoring quad combos in the second half and one hell of a consistent amazing rotating position that typically works like a well oiled machine and the excitement and Ilia would be a happy medium between the two when Vincent seems almost guaranteed to choke and not enough to mask the woefully underperforming triple double ladies squad.

Ilia Malinin not going to the Olympics is a travesty. Very disappointed in the US Olympic Committe decision. In the meantime, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan landed a Quad axel in practice and did a Quad axel in competition with a misstep in the landing and easily won the Japanese Nationals with no falls. What Is the USA team thinking in not letting this incredible young US Skater a chance to medal for the US in the Olympics? Such a humble human being. Nathan deserves all the respect from fans. Given his humility, Nathan fans should look forward to Ilia's growth into a super star on the ice in the near future too. Unlike the other obnoxious fandom that has been constantly dissing Nathan for the resentment that their fave has been on a losing streak to Nathan for years, Nathan fans should look up to Nathan's incredible sportsmanship and meekness. I guess an elite athlete's attitude and genuine respect for his peer rivals or younger rising stars do have a great impact on how his fans respond to these peer competitors' performances and how they will decently respect all of them, not hating on them. This is one of the main reasons why Nathan, not the other haughty one, is always my favorite athlete.

@@ws-yc7ue Nathan follows a very old Chinese school of dealing with people: very humble, give credit to everyone and always elevate other people's achievement. Meanwhile, we are more used to flashy and self promoting athletes. So some people even take Nathan's words at face value and immediately pronounce : XYZ is better than Nathan as even he himself admits it. No, Nathan is trying to be very traditional Chinese suave and not to antagonize anyone even at the expense of his own reputation. I think he believes with his complete domination after 2018 Olympics, he doesn't need to tell everyone he is the best. His records speak for his supremacy.
I like Nathan. He is a very smart, self effacing and genuinely nice young man. But I also think he is shrewd enough to realize that him being humble helps him a lot on the endorsement deals. I don't think his family is as stressed for money as they were 10 years ago. Still they are by no means now a super rich family. Indeed with the Olympic gold and a totally wholesome and likeable image, Nathan can easily pull in $2 to $4 millions endorsement this year. Olympian time frame for fortune is very short. So why should Nathan endanger that pot of gold by getting in a feud with anyone (Ilia or Hanyu) ?

Yes, Americans, you sometimes baffle me. Fate has put such a diamond in your hands, and you turn up your nose. You don't know what to do with it. Yes, grab Ilya and drag him to the Olympics. Ilya can become a real sensation for the Olympics. Yes, out of inexperience, he can mess up there. Not scary. The main thing is that he will breathe in the air of the Olympics, see what Nate and Yuzu are doing for the sake of victory, collide with their foreheads on the Olympic ice, hear this enthusiastic roar of the stands ... After that he will gnaw medals out of the ice with his teeth.
Don't cling to the past - look to the future. Today Ilya is clearly stronger than Jason and, it seems, even Vincent. A little more - will be stronger than Nathan. And this is not his ceiling, where is his ceiling - nobody knows. This talent has just begun to take off, it is picking up speed, and you are breaking off its wings. The one who is stronger and more promising should go to the Olympics. This sport and yesterday's merits are of no interest to anyone. Cruel - yes, painful - yes. But this is a sport. There is no room for sentimentality. The question of Ilya or Jason after their rentals shouldn't have been raised at all. The comments just kill me: “Oh, Jason is so great! Oh, he skates so artistically! Oh, we love him so much! " Do you love? Get married! Why drag to the Olympics? By choosing a weaker one, you are killing figure skating, you are killing sport. What, you have such rules? According to your rules, should a weaker athlete go to the Olympics today? So these are bad rules, and they need to be changed. Arutyunyan is right.
Sorry for my English, sorry for my emotionality, but I can't believe what's going on.

Jason lost the podium to Vincent by less than a point. Even so, Vincent was severely overscored in the free skate. He even had a fall and some under rotations not just in his quads, but in his triples as well. While other than the quad sal, Jason skated clean, artistic, and amazing, with difficult transitions straight into his jumps. Jason should have been 3rd, not Vincent. Idk why USFS is overscoring Vincent so much when Jason is more consistent than him and the reason the US men got 3 spots to the Olympics because they had to earn it back when Vincent lost the 3 spots in the past.
So my Olympic team would be Nathan, Ilia, and Jason. They're all more consistent than Vincent. Justice for Ilia indeed.

All those people saying Jason doesn't have quads, etc. First of all, isn't that a bit of a hypocrisy. For example, Anna Shcherbakova doesn't have quads, or a triple axel, has worse skating skills compared to Jason, but she is going to the Olympics. Second, Jason may not have quads, but he is consistent and he has a triple axel. Back then, Aliona Kostornaia had a triple axel and no quads but won against the quad jumping ladies and people were very supportive lol.
Lastly, you are stupid if you say Jason has terrible skating skills. Do you even know how skating skills are judged by the panel? Jason has one of the best skating skills, is a complete package in terms of components, and is more technically consistent than Vincent would ever be.
If the judges weren't a bunch of Americans, Jason would have outscored Vincent because Vincent kept falling and under rotating in the free while Jason had transitions and consistent fully rotated landings on his jumps. Also, they didn't call Vincent's underrotations, so yeah, Jason would have won and he earned his Olympic spot. Vincent's spot was handed to him no matter his inconsistencies.

So as a skating fan, I’d like to add my perspective on why I love it.
Skating is 50% artistry, and 50% technical elements and jumps. There is almost no other sport in the world like this that at its ideal combines the thrill of extreme athleticism with the heartfelt movement of worship and dance.
Nathan Chen at his best is the best technical skater in the world. In his short and long he’s been the only skater in the world to land a quad lutz triple toe combo in the middle of the programs when most skaters don’t have the stamina to do this, ever.
Most skaters put the 4lutz at the beginning of the program, and Ilia did so, without the combo that Vincent cleanly landed.
The only reason Illia got higher pcs scores is because he cleanly landed all his jumps.
To say Illia skated better than Nathan is like saying a brilliant quarterback college football player is better than Joe Montana at his best. Honestly they are not comparable yet, and I’m sorry but Illia’s artistry needs a ton of work, it’s like saying the frame of a house is better than a fully completed house. At this point I’m not sure Illia could beat Yuma Kagiyama of Japan. Illia would have to skate perfectly and not miss a single jump under Olympic pressure which is a giant question mark, and even if he did so, would be a long shot for the podium.
If skaters like Yuzuru hanyu, Yuma, Mikael Kolyada and Shoma all skated clean, only Nathan would have a decent chance of topping them all, as long as he skated cleanly.
Having studied the sport for the last 12 years, I’m convinced Jason Brown has the best artistry in the world, even though he fell on the quad salchow, he has landed it before and even won an international competition this year. Jason is doing transitions that are so insanely difficult not even the best skaters in the world would add that to their programs and that’s why he regularly medals against men landing quads such as Camden Pulkinen. Not sending Jason to the Olympics would be like rejecting the Mona Lisa painting for an unknown artists portrait that just “looks more realistic.”
Sending Jason is extremely healthy for the sport, young girls bodies are being twisted and manipulated to do things that only men have the strength to do. If someone like Jason is valued over a terrific jumper it could save millions of young girls bodies from being severely wrecked in the name of competition.
If anybody ever liked Michelle kwan and her era, she often won on the strength of her artistry not her jumps.
Yuma kim won because she was the perfect blend of artistry and technical even though Mao Asada had two 3As over her.
These are timeless values in this particular sport, if we lose it, it might as well be called ice skating long jumping, with no music nor meaning.

    • @Salmiyaguy1
      @Salmiyaguy1 2 года назад +4

I agree with most of your points, but I do think the ISU has demonstrated they will give Nathan a gold medal against Hanyu even if he doesn't skate cleanly. I think the ISU is caught up in Nathan's "masculine" skating and how transformative it could be for the sport and bringing in new audiences. The sport has been a dichotomy for years: we want artistry balanced with great athleticism but we also want it to be masculine, but not too masculine like Elvis but not too artistic (ie feminine) like Johnny Weir. Apparently, they think this will bring in more men to the sport and bring a bigger audience. Frankly, the sport would be better served trying to market itself to communities of color if it wants a bigger audience. but I digress.
I do agree Ilia is too much of a wildcard. It was like Michelle in 94, should she have skated instead of Nancy or Tonya? Unlikely. She was too inexperienced at that point, no matter how well she skated at Nationals. And again, the body of work over the season is what judges are looking at, which was quite clear to everyone going into Nationals. Can anyone point to where a junior skater was placed on the US Olympic team without senior experience? There could be cases, but none come to mind for me. Still, that being said, I do think if Ilia was sent and skated as well as he did, he has an outside chance at a medal, likely no more than bronze depending on how Kolyada, Chen, Hanyu, Yuma, Shoma and even Jin Boyang skate and Kevin Aymoz. Judges would likely score even Keegan over Ilia if the former skates somewhat cleanly at the games.
Vincent is a wildcard too. He could walk away with gold, or he could not qualify for the long program at all. But he’s proven himself with a world bronze and a win at Skate America, so judges will be looking at him as a contender. And if he skates cleanly, he’s definitely in the mix.
As for Jason, I would provide an analogy of Adam Rippon in 2018. Adam had the best spins at the Olympics period (male or female) and in my opinion the best artistic program (his long) of the men's event. Frankly, he became the breakout star of the entire event transcending the sport or even the Olympics itself, for that moment of time. Still, he finished no higher than 10th. I do believe Jason will finish higher but it's unlikely he's in the running for a medal unless the top contenders pretty much have a meltdown.

Hi Charlie thanks for your intelligent reply, it’s true the sport is changing in a way that’s more dynamic for men but could be very unhealthy in the least for women. I love watching skaters with style and finesse - I grew up watching Janet Lynn, Toller Cranston, John Curry, Robin Cousins - but our sport has moved on and if you're a male skater without a quad you have zero chance of winning an Olympic medal, in fact it's almost getting there in ladies skating. He skated as a junior this year. You can look up the programs on youtube. He did well in junior, but the quads weren't very successful and scores would not be enough in senior competition. His only senior international competition did not go well. If you watch the other competitions, you'll see why he was not picked. I'm looking forward to watching him in the future.

The Olympic team is not chosen solely based on Quads. I wish for you it was, but it is not. Trust, ALL focus for Ilia Malanin, in 2022-2023 and beyond will be on him and Isabeau Levito and other steller talents coming up. Watch Nathan's and Yuzu's Hanyu's (Japan Nationals) and Jason's transitions. There are barely any crossovers... Nathan's GOE's and PCS's are high above anyone. His excellent technic and maturity have been developed over the last 12 years. Look at him when he won Novice, Juniors twice, and his 2016 Nationals performance. Jason is retiring after this season. He is ten years older than Ilia. Ilia is the new torchbearer. Remember, Vicent is the 2019 World Bronze Medalist and recently defeated Nathan Chen at Skate America.
Evengi Plushenko (2nd in 2010 Olympics and 2006 Olympic champ) complained when Evan Lysacek won the 2010 Olympic Gold with 'No Quads!!!!". Now, 12 years later, you're doing the same thing. Also, I have to say Jason Brown's masterful Schindlers List Free Skate was Everything. He has been the face of skating excellence, sportsmanship, compassion, perseverance, genuine humanity, and a record of outstanding skill for a decade. He has worked his ass off since missing the team in 2018 (I was there). He also represents the popularity that USFS needs to get more young talent interested in skating.
The Olympics are also a big TV Commercial for USFS. Why do you think Mariah Bell won the ladies. She has a better "Cinderella Story" than Karen Chen. And Olympic stories are what get advertisers and corporate sponsorship. Two national champions named Chen, two Asian-American skaters of Chinese descent, are not big sellers. All these things are factors. Not Quads. Free your mind, and the rest will follow. Ilia's time is coming! For sure!!

Ilia did great but some of you really need to get your facts straight. He did not do all the difficult quad combinations that Nathan did and he also needs a lot more work on his PCS so, even with Nathan's two errors, there was no way he was going to win. Claiming that he was better than Nathan is delusional.
Secondly, the US Nats is NOT necessarily a competition to decide who goes to the Olympics. Outside of the champ, the Olympic team is decided on each skater's body of work, not solely on this one competition. The US fed is looking for consistency and reliability. Ilia simply doesn't have enough of a bodywork for the committee to pick him at this point. So while the pick for the team was not the outcome some wanted, it was prob the right call based on the rules and criteria in place. Everyone, including the skaters, knew the rules before this competition started. Now, if Ilia had defeated Nathan and was the champion then things would have been a little different for him, since champions are pretty much a lock for the Olympic team.

If you read the selection criteria for the Olympic team, you will see that international standing at senior level is critical. Ilia is lacking in this and cannot be compared with Yuma Kagiyama of Japan who won silver at worlds and 2 grand prix golds. They cannot base selection on results of one competition regardless of how brilliant it was. For the team event, consistency is of prime importance and that is what Jason has. They already have one inconsistent skater in Vincent, who nevertheless meets the qualifying criteria, and Ilia is an unknown quantity.
Nowhere is it stated that the nationals is THE Olympic selection event.
