Never. Would I have found this gem without Madlib. Never. This recording is STILL NOT on Apple Music. And I don’t rock with Spotify but I’m not counting on them to have it. So YES… MADLIB brought me here! 🎉🥂 And thank Hip-Hop for connecting us to our roots.
Same here 🙏🏾; I've known and heard so much of Donald Byrd's music and had no clue who he was for the longest. I also am grateful for Shazam, in addition to Madlib. And Guru (S.i.P)
Black Byrd would never stop playing on my bi-fold 8 track player, that was he beginning of smooth jazz. There was nothing that can compare to the 70's we didn't have high tech but everything was accessible.
Hip-hop has different standards than jazz, focusing on lyricism and production. The album Madlib released is more of a tribute mix of the most aesthetically pleasing parts of the track to him. I wouldn't say it's his most creative work, but it allows him to expose his own favorite jazz to his audience in a different way than it was on the old records themselves. Madlib is fantastic at taking samples from old records to create something better on most of his tracks, especially on Madvillainy.
WHAT RUBBUSH, WHAT INSTRUMENT DID HE PLAYED?. THESE LITTLE HIP HOP HEAD COME ON HERE AND TRY AND JUSTIFY THEIR D.J.S SAMPLING GREAT MUSIC AND HAVE THE TEMERITY TO SAY THE SAMPLES IS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. PLEASE GO AND GET A MUSIC LESSON.
@@augustuswhite5211 stfu madlib has played the drums keyboard bass etc not one time did this guy say that the samples were better than the original people like you always have to bring hate into the world
@@jdsmooth.2388 You can steal from the original and claim you made it better. Who told you it better. If he had the talent to make it better, why doesn't he create an original piece, rather than pirating the original which is what it is , stealing.
Fair point. I never discredited Madlib though, he is easily my favourite Hip Hop producer, topping even Dilla in my personal favourites. Sad thing nowadays is that kids simply sample for the sake of sampling and not to create good music.
Donald and Freddie both used to say that but truth is they looked very different. Donald was much taller with much sharper facial features. Freddie had more of a roundness in his face throughout his life.
Lyricism focuses on a variety of styles, such as the flows/rhythms, inner and outer rhyme schemes, figurative language, references, and other poetic devices. MF DOOM is my personal favorite because of his ability to use all of these while keeping myself, the listener, entertained, which is really all that music is about, right?
Agreed. Now that everyone samples the Cortex album, Troupeau Bleu, it's kinda sad to see how the beauty of the tracks are used. I understand your point. Peace.
It's surprising how this never made the final cut or was ever released before...Makes you wonder what other goodness they have left on some dusty old reels.
Never. Would I have found this gem without Madlib. Never. This recording is STILL NOT on Apple Music. And I don’t rock with Spotify but I’m not counting on them to have it. So YES… MADLIB brought me here! 🎉🥂
this song is tight, ahead of its time, smooth jazz! Donald Byrd is the Dude! What I like about Donald's Playin is how he vibrato's his notes. Check him out Playin Startdust! Hey all Check out Lee Morgan also!
I would, simply because Madlib couldn't (or wouldn't, I should say) create a track that insults the original sample. It may be presented in a different way, but that's the beauty of sample-based production; the unique sounds that have been made can be put together into something that is unique in itself, with a certain beauty that may have not been visible on the original track. I do respect the artists, but I wouldn't discredit Madlib by any means.
@xxllPMF3llxx he said 'a lot of us' not 'hey xxIIPMF3IIxx, you only like jazz due to madlib.' So your point is not valid. And hes not wrong. A lot of folks dont listen to jazz, so when they hear it when its sampled it opens their ears to a new wave of sound. I personally didn't hear a lot of jazz until I heard A tribe and Madlib sample some sick tracks.
Sorry if I offend, I am an old man who grew up with Jazz, and as a musician, I just can't understand why there is no creativity (or rarely found) in modern sounds. I am in no way as competent as these legends, but they are who I look up to, they set the bar and challenge me to be better than I am, Hip Hop does not.
That’s just you it makes sense why you believe that hip hop dosen’t set the bar and challenge you to be better because you grew up listened to jazz it’s always different for everyone and as you’ve listened to jazz of course hip hop isn’t going to do that for
Great song by Donald Byrd. It’s just a shame that whoever posted this video used a picture of Freddie Hubbard instead of Donald Byrd!! Do you not know what a young Donald Byrd looked like??
This peers to be a good song...I dunno if was ever released yet but a remix to that song is on the Blue Note Remixed CD. Tell me what year this song was recorded on what date? Plus the personnel too.
I can totally understand where you're coming from because this is what the majority of the mainstream hip hop artists and even some underground do. But Hip Hop itself has origins in Jazz. Does anyone remember Jazz poetry? There is a lot of development in the Hip Hop scene, where flow and lyricsm have reached new heights. Ignore most of today's hip hop crazes like Odd Future who's lyrics could have been written by a 14 year old who thinks he's a genius, but instead look at the work by MF Doom.
